Coverage limits
Vehicle Damage (Comprehensive / Own Damage Cover)
Conditional
Only in Différence, Pertinence, Plénitude
Covers accidental damage to the insured vehicle from collision, loss of control, impact with a fixed or moving object, vandalism and other accidental events, indemnified up to the vehicle's replacement value as fixed by an expert on the day of the claim. Full 'tous risques' cover is only available under the Différence, Pertinence (legacy, no longer sold but retained for existing policyholders) and Plénitude formulas; Initiale only covers weather events, natural catastrophes, terrorism and technological disasters, and Essentiel additionally covers theft, fire and glass breakage but not collision/other accidental events.
Total Loss / Theft Not Recovered
€1,900 – €3,900
Only in Essentiel, Différence, Pertinence, Plénitude
When the vehicle is stolen and not recovered, or declared irreparable, MAIF indemnifies at the vehicle's replacement value as assessed by an expert. Under the Plénitude formula, recent vehicles benefit from purchase-value indemnification (up to 24 months for motorhomes, caravans, trailers, voiturettes and two/three/four-wheelers >50cm³, or up to 48 months for cars and light utility vehicles), and older vehicles (>24 or >48 months) benefit from a 10% or 20% markup on the assessed replacement value. Under Différence, Pertinence and Plénitude, a minimum guaranteed value (€1,900-€3,900 for 4-wheel vehicles, €610-€1,300 for two/three/four-wheelers >80cm³, €1,600 for caravans) applies to old low-value vehicles insured continuously on a comprehensive basis for at least 5 years. Collection vehicles are indemnified up to the value bracket chosen by the policyholder.
Partial Damage / Repairs
Conditional
Only in Différence, Pertinence, Plénitude
Repairable accidental damage (collision, impact, loss of control, vandalism) to the insured vehicle is covered up to its replacement value. Repairs carried out following any covered claim under the Vehicle Damage guarantee are guaranteed for life, excluding damage from normal wear, lack of manufacturer-recommended maintenance, bird droppings or weathering.
Theft or Attempted Theft
Conditional
Only in Essentiel, Différence, Pertinence, Plénitude
Covers theft or attempted theft of the insured vehicle, its fixed accessories and its equipment, indemnified at replacement value (or enhanced purchase value for recent vehicles under Plénitude, see Total Loss). No deductible applies when the thief is identified; otherwise the contractual deductible applies.
Glass Breakage
Conditional
Only in Essentiel, Différence, Pertinence, Plénitude
Covers breakage of the windscreen, side windows, rear window, headlight/taillight lenses and transparent sunroof when it is the only damage to the vehicle or results from a projected object, indemnified at the average local repair/replacement cost (capped at the vehicle's replacement value). A €50 deductible applies for replacement under Essentiel, Différence and Pertinence (no deductible for repair); Plénitude has no deductible at all for glass claims, whether repaired or replaced.
Weather Events and Natural Catastrophes
Covered
Covers flooding, mudslides, landslides, avalanches, windstorms (145 km/h or more sustained, or 215 km/h or more in gusts, or officially declared storms), snow weight, hail, lightning, earthquakes, volcanic eruptions, tsunamis and other officially-declared natural catastrophes. This guarantee is included in every formula, from Initiale upward, with a fixed deductible of €380 for officially declared natural catastrophes regardless of formula.
Vandalism
Conditional
Only in Différence, Pertinence, Plénitude
Covers acts of vandalism against the insured vehicle; only available under the 'tous risques' formulas (Différence, Pertinence and Plénitude), not under Initiale or Essentiel.
Roadside Assistance / Towing
€180
Roadside assistance and towing to the nearest garage in the event of accident, fire, theft, attempted theft or vandalism is included in every formula with no mileage deductible. Breakdown assistance is included only when the breakdown occurs more than 50 km from home (20 km in Guadeloupe, Martinique and Réunion) unless the 'Assistance panne 0km' option is purchased or the Plénitude formula is held, in which case breakdown assistance applies with no minimum distance. Towing/breakdown costs are covered up to €180 (parts, fuel and labour excluded).
Replacement Vehicle
Optional
Provides a courtesy vehicle following an accident, theft or breakdown. Included by default under the Plénitude formula (and the legacy Pertinence formula); available as a paid option under Initiale, Essentiel and Différence. Maximum loan durations: up to 40 consecutive days for a repairable vehicle at a partner garage (Différence with option / Plénitude), 20 days in case of theft with disappearance of the vehicle, and 7 days in case of breakdown; reimbursement of rental costs up to €40-€60 per day is available when no partner garage or courtesy vehicle can be provided.
Driver Bodily Injury Cover
€7,700 – €46,000
Covers bodily injury to the driver and other insured persons resulting from an accident involving the insured vehicle, even if the driver is at fault. Included in every formula (Initiale to Plénitude). Per the IPID, medical expenses are reimbursed up to €1,400 and home-help assistance up to €700; permanent disability lump sums range from €7,700 (10-19% disability) up to €23,000 (50-100% disability), doubled to €46,000 if permanent third-party assistance is required; death benefits are €1,600 (base, to any beneficiary), plus €3,900 for a surviving spouse/partner or €3,100 per dependent child.
Key conditions
Driver age and experience limit
No explicit minimum age or licence-seniority threshold is set for standard cover; the driver must simply hold a valid driving licence or capacity certificate in accordance with current regulations. An additional €225 deductible applies, deducted first from the Vehicle Damage guarantee and then from the Third-Party Liability guarantee, when a dependent child who is not declared as principal or 'declared' driver causes an accident (this surcharge does not apply during accompanied/supervised learner-driving).
Repair network requirements
Policyholders are free to choose any professional repairer. If the vehicle is repaired at a MAIF partner garage, MAIF pays the claim indemnity directly to the repairer, avoiding any advance payment; if the vehicle is repaired outside the partner network, the policyholder is reimbursed based on the expert's assessed repair cost.
Territorial scope
Full cover applies in France metropolitan area, Guadeloupe, Martinique, Réunion, Monaco, Saint-Barthélemy and Saint-Martin (French part). Reduced cover (excluding personalised legal information and legal protection, recourse limited to amicable settlement) applies in EEA countries and other Green Card countries for vehicles registered in France or Monaco. Morocco and Tunisia are covered only for stays up to 1 year for vehicles registered outside those countries. No cover applies elsewhere, including French Guiana.
Anti-theft requirements
The contract does not impose any specific anti-theft device or immobiliser requirement to benefit from theft cover; in the event of theft or attempted theft, the policyholder must file a police report as soon as possible and forward the receipt to MAIF, and must notify MAIF promptly if the vehicle or accessories are recovered.
Claim notification deadline
Any event likely to trigger a guarantee must be reported within 5 business days of the date the policyholder became aware of it; this period is extended to 30 days for natural catastrophes, running from the publication of the official decree recognising that status.
Deductible rules
Deductibles vary by peril and formula: a fixed €380 deductible applies to officially-declared natural catastrophes regardless of formula; non-declared weather events (storm, snow, hail, lightning) apply the contractual deductible capped at €380; no deductible applies to technological catastrophes; glass claims carry a €50 deductible for replacement (free for repair) on Essentiel/Différence/Pertinence, and no deductible at all on Plénitude; theft/fire/collision claims apply the contractual deductible chosen at subscription (waived if the party at fault is identified for theft); an additional €225 deductible applies when an undeclared dependent-child driver causes the accident.
