Direct payment

Premiums are paid annually, semi-annually, quarterly or monthly, either via SEPA direct debit or outside the SEPA direct debit procedure (e.g. bank transfer).

Geographic scope

Europe and non-European EU territories

Coverage applies within the geographical borders of Europe and the non-European territories that belong to the scope of the European Union.

Unique selling points

  • The base Motor Komfort line was developed to meet Stiftung Warentest's requirements, so policyholders already get comprehensive cover without stepping up to a higher tier.
  • Comprehensive cover extends to damage caused by hacking attacks directly targeting the insured vehicle's software, both as accident and as malicious-act damage.
  • The battery (Akkumulator) of electric and hybrid vehicles is insured on an all-risk basis against damage, destruction, loss or total loss under Vollkasko.
  • Vollkasko cover also applies during ferry or ship transport of the vehicle, including stranding, collision, or cargo-jettison scenarios.
  • Choosing the Motor Premium line triples the new-value compensation window for total loss or theft, from 12 to 36 months after first registration.

Coverage limits

Own damage cover (Kasko)

Not established from the insurer's documents

HDI reimburses damage to, destruction of, or loss of the insured vehicle under the Fahrzeugversicherung (Teilkasko/Vollkasko). Total payment is capped at the vehicle's new-price value (Neupreis) unless a special agreement (e.g. BV 243) sets a flat ceiling of 250,000 EUR.

Total loss / write-off compensation

Not established from the insurer's documents

HDI pays the replacement value (Wiederbeschaffungswert) less any residual value in case of total loss, destruction or loss of the vehicle. New-value compensation (Neupreisentschädigung) applies if the loss occurs within 12 months of first registration under Motor Komfort; Motor Premium extends this window to 36 months.

Partial damage / repair cost cover

Not established from the insurer's documents

If the vehicle is damaged but not a total loss, HDI pays the necessary repair costs up to the replacement value, or, if not fully repaired, up to the replacement value less residual value.

Theft, robbery and unauthorised use

Not established from the insurer's documents

Covers theft, robbery, and unauthorised use of the vehicle by non-staff persons. Embezzlement (Unterschlagung) is covered only under limited conditions in Motor Komfort, but without exception under Motor Premium.

Glass breakage

Not established from the insurer's documents

Covers breakage of windscreen, side and rear windows, mirror glass and light covers regardless of cause. No deductible applies if the glass is professionally repaired instead of replaced.

Natural hazards

Not established from the insurer's documents

Covers direct impact of lightning, earthquake, landslide, subsidence, hail, avalanche, storm (wind force 8 or above) and flooding on the vehicle.

Vandalism / malicious acts

Not established from the insurer's documents

Malicious or spiteful acts by unauthorised third parties are covered only under the Fahrzeugvollversicherung (Vollkasko); they are not covered under the basic Fahrzeugteilversicherung (Teilkasko).

Roadside assistance / breakdown help

Not established from the insurer's documents

Not part of the Fahrzeugversicherung itself; available only via the separate Mobilitäts-Schutz contract, which can only be taken out together with the Kfz-Haftpflichtversicherung for the same vehicle. Covers, e.g., on-site breakdown recovery up to 300 EUR and towing to the nearest workshop up to 400 EUR.

Replacement vehicle / rental car

Not established from the insurer's documents

Not included in the Fahrzeugversicherung (rental-car costs are explicitly excluded). Available only via the optional Mobilitäts-Schutz rider: HDI helps arrange a rental car and pays up to 50 EUR/day for 7 days, or 14 days if the incident occurs at least 50 km from the policyholder's German address; abroad, a flat 350 EUR or 700 EUR applies instead of the daily rate.

Driver accident cover (Fahrer-Schutz)

Not established from the insurer's documents

Not part of the Fahrzeugversicherung; available as an optional rider (Fahrer-Schutz) to the Kfz-Haftpflichtversicherung for cars, campervans and works-traffic vans, covering personal injury suffered by the authorised driver in an accident. Cover applies only to drivers who have completed their 23rd year of age, up to 8 million EUR per claim and insurance year.

Key conditions

Driver age and experience limit

The Fahrzeugversicherung itself sets no minimum driver age, but the premium depends on the age of the youngest and oldest driver; the optional Fahrer-Schutz rider only covers drivers who have completed their 23rd year of age.

Repair network requirements

A repair-network commitment is optional (HDI Werkstatt-Service). If chosen and the vehicle is not repaired at a partner workshop, an extra deductible of 15% of the claim payment (minimum 100 EUR) applies.

Territorial scope

Coverage applies within the geographical borders of Europe and the non-European territories belonging to the scope of the European Union.

Anti-theft requirements

If the stolen vehicle could have been fitted with an HDI-recognised immobiliser but was not, the total-loss compensation is reduced by 10%, unless otherwise agreed.

Claim notification deadline

Any claim event must be reported to HDI within one week. Theft of the vehicle or insured parts must be reported immediately in text form, and theft, fire, vandalism or animal-collision damage exceeding 200 EUR must also be reported to the police without delay.

Deductible rules

An agreed deductible is deducted from the compensation for every claim event. No deductible applies to glass-breakage claims if the glass is professionally repaired rather than replaced. If HDI Werkstatt-Service applies and repair is not carried out at a partner workshop, an additional deductible of 15% of the claim (minimum 100 EUR) applies.
