Online purchase

Direct payment

HUK-COBURG is authorised to settle justified third-party claims directly on the policyholder's behalf and to defend unjustified or excessive claims at its own expense, exercising full claims-handling authority (Regulierungsvollmacht) including appointing legal counsel in the policyholder's name.

Geographic scope

Geographic boundaries of Europe and the non-European territories belonging to the European Union

MTPL cover applies within Europe and EU overseas territories; the visited country's legally required minimum applies if higher than the agreed cover. With an International Green Card, cover extends to the listed non-European countries unless struck through (e.g. Iran and Morocco are excluded despite being signatories). The Mallorca Policy (rental car liability abroad) excludes Germany, Russia and Belarus and is not available under the Basis tariff.

Unique selling points

  • Liability cover of 100 million EUR per claim for personal injury, property damage and financial loss – far beyond the legal minimum.
  • 5% combo discount (Kombi-Bonus) on liability and comprehensive premiums when bundling with other HUK-COBURG policies.
  • Optional Schutzbrief roadside assistance add-on available from just 11 EUR/year, covering all vehicle occupants at no extra charge.
  • Optional Fahrerschutz driver accident cover up to 15 million EUR per claim, available from 19 EUR/year, even for self-caused accidents.
  • Trusted by more than 13 million customers as Germany's largest motor insurer.

Coverage limits

Bodily injury liability

€100,000,000

HUK-COBURG's motor liability insurance provides a combined limit of 100 million EUR per claim for personal injury, property damage and pure financial loss, well above the statutory minimum. The Mallorca Policy extension (rental-car liability abroad) is included in the Classic tariff but excluded under the Basis tariff.

Property damage liability

€100,000,000

Property damage caused to third parties is covered within the same combined 100 million EUR per-claim limit (shared with bodily injury and financial loss) that HUK-COBURG applies across its Classic and Basis liability tariffs.

Passive legal defence against unjustified claims

Covered

Unjustified or excessive third-party claims are defended by HUK-COBURG at its own cost as part of the MTPL contract; the insurer is entitled to conduct any resulting litigation and appoint a lawyer on the policyholder's behalf. No separate monetary limit is stated in the terms.

International Green Card / Green Insurance Card

Covered

Where HUK-COBURG has issued an International Green Card, MTPL cover extends to the non-European countries listed on it, unless the country code is struck through. Certain Green Card signatory countries are nevertheless excluded by HUK-COBURG, e.g. Iran and Morocco.

Roadside assistance / breakdown cover (Schutzbrief)

Optional

The Schutzbrief is a separate, optional contract (available from about 11 EUR/year) providing service or cost reimbursement for breakdowns, accidents, theft, illness and natural catastrophes. Individual benefit caps apply, e.g. up to 200 EUR (400 EUR for vans/motorhomes) for roadside recovery if self-organised, up to 80 EUR/day for a rental car for up to 7 days, up to 1,000 EUR for return transport costs abroad, up to 100 EUR per overnight stay, and up to 50 EUR for short local trips. No single aggregate sum insured is stated.

Driver accident protection (Fahrerschutz)

€15,000,000

Fahrerschutz is an optional add-on (from about 19 EUR/year) that compensates the driver's own bodily injury from an accident while using the vehicle, as if HUK-COBURG were liable under MTPL, up to 15 million EUR per claim. It also pays a hospital daily allowance of 20 EUR from the first calendar day of an in-patient stay, for up to 4 weeks, and covers pain-and-suffering compensation only after at least 3 consecutive days of hospitalisation within 6 months of the accident.

Passenger accident cover

Optional

Under the 2026 AKB, the optional Fahrerschutz covers the policyholder, the driver, all other occupants and the vehicle keeper (A.4.2) rather than the driver alone, so passengers can be compensated for their own accident-related personal injury as an add-on, with no fixed sum insured stated (paid according to actual damage, as under MTPL rules). Separately, authorised occupants are already mitversicherte Personen under the MTPL liability cover itself (A.1.2), which addresses their claims against a negligent driver rather than a standalone accident benefit.

Key conditions

Territorial scope

MTPL cover applies within the geographic boundaries of Europe and the non-European territories of the EU; at minimum, the visited country's own statutory requirements apply. Kasko, Schutzbrief, Fahrerschutz and Ausland-Schadenschutz additionally exclude Russia and Belarus, and the Mallorca Policy excludes Germany, Russia and Belarus.

Green card rules

If an International Green Card has been issued, MTPL cover extends to the listed non-European countries unless the country code is struck through; HUK-COBURG excludes certain Green Card signatory countries such as Iran and Morocco despite their membership in the agreement.

Driver restrictions

The vehicle may only be used by an authorised driver holding the legally required driving licence; the policyholder, keeper or owner must not knowingly allow use by an unauthorised or unlicensed driver, or one impaired by alcohol or other intoxicants. Additionally, the HUK-COBURG Haftpflicht-Unterstützungs-Kasse (VVaG) insures only persons affiliated with the public sector under its statutes, while HUK-COBURG-Allgemeine Versicherung AG insures all other customers.

Claim notification deadline

Policyholders must report a claim within one week (verbal or telephone notice suffices, except for theft of the vehicle or mitinsured items, which must be reported in text form). Third-party claims raised out of court must be reported within one week; court proceedings must be reported without delay.

Bonus-malus rules

Contracts are placed into No-Claims (SF) classes based on contract duration and claims-free years, re-evaluated once per insurance year; a claims-free year improves the class by one step, a claims-affected year triggers downgrading per the SF tables, which differ between the Classic and Basis tariffs (Basis downgrades more severely). An optional Rabattschutz add-on keeps one claim per calendar year from affecting the classification.
