Württembergische Gemeinde-Versicherung a. G. (WGV Group)
WGV
WGV is a motor third-party liability insurance for the Germany market with online purchase and limited assistance availability.
Direct payment
WGV is authorised to settle justified third-party claims directly in the policyholder's name and to defend unjustified claims at its own cost, without requiring the policyholder's prior individual approval of each settlement.
Geographic scope
Europe and the non-European territories belonging to the European Union
Cover applies within the geographic borders of Europe and the non-European territories of the EU; scope follows the legally required minimum of the visited country, at least the level of the German contract. If an International Insurance Card (Green Card) has been issued, cover extends to the non-European countries listed on it that are not crossed out.

Unique selling points
- Cover is technology-neutral: protection applies regardless of whether the driver or an automated/autonomous system was driving, including sensor failure or a hacker altering the vehicle's software.
- Optional Rabattschutz add-on allows one claim per year without losing the no-claims discount, keeping the policyholder in the same or a better SF class despite a claim.
- OPTIMAL tariff includes a free 'Mallorca policy' extending MTPL cover to rental cars driven abroad by the policyholder or close family members, at no extra charge.
- The MeineWGV loyalty programme grants an ongoing 5% discount on MTPL and comprehensive (Kasko) premiums once three or more WGV products are held.
- WGV's Kfz-Versicherung was awarded 'Fairstes Preis-Leistungs-Verhältnis' by Focus Money among 28 tested German motor insurers.
Coverage limits
Bodily injury liability
Covered
Covers the policyholder against third-party claims for injury or death caused through the use of the insured vehicle. The exact insured sum per claim is agreed individually and stated in the policy schedule (Versicherungsschein), not fixed by the general terms.
Property damage liability
Covered
Covers the policyholder against third-party claims for damage, destruction or loss of property caused through the use of the insured vehicle, and for pure financial losses not connected to a personal injury or property damage claim. The insured sum is individually agreed and stated in the policy schedule.
Defence against unfounded claims
Covered
As a core, always-included feature of the MTPL cover, WGV defends unjustified or excessive third-party claims at its own cost and, if litigated, conducts the legal proceedings on the policyholder's behalf. This is passive claims defence built into MTPL; it is distinct from the separately sold active 'Verkehrs-Rechtsschutzversicherung' (motor legal expenses insurance), which is not part of this product.
Green Card / International Insurance Card extension
Conditional
If WGV has issued an International Insurance Card (Green Card), MTPL cover extends to the non-European countries listed on the card whose names are not crossed out, at least at the scope of the German contract; this extension is conditional on the card having been issued.
Roadside assistance / breakdown cover (Schutzbrief)
Optional
Roadside assistance is not part of MTPL itself but is offered as a separate, legally independent 'Schutzbrief' contract providing breakdown recovery, towing, vehicle storage, replacement transport and related travel assistance, with individual sub-limits (e.g. towing costs, overnight stays) set out in its own conditions.
Driver accident cover (Fahrerschutzversicherung)
€15,000,000
Optional, separately concluded Fahrerschutzversicherung compensates the driver's own personal injury from an accident while driving the insured vehicle as if a third party were liable, up to EUR 15,000,000 per claim, subject to at least a 72-hour continuous inpatient hospital stay within six months of the accident.
Passenger/occupant accident cover (Kfz-Unfallversicherung)
Optional
Optional, separately concluded Kfz-Unfallversicherung pays agreed lump sums for invalidity or death of vehicle occupants (driver and passengers) under a lump-sum (Pauschal) system; the agreed insured sums are individually stated in the policy schedule, not fixed in the general terms.
Key conditions
Territorial scope
Cover applies within the geographic borders of Europe and the non-European territories belonging to the EU; scope follows the visited country's legal minimum, at least the German contractual scope.
Green card rules
If WGV has issued an International Insurance Card, cover extends to the non-European countries listed on it whose names are not crossed out, at least at the scope of the German contract.
Driver restrictions
The vehicle may only be used by an authorised driver (used with the knowledge and consent of the person entitled to dispose of it) who holds the driving licence required for the vehicle on public roads; the policyholder, holder or owner must not knowingly allow use by an unauthorised or unlicensed driver.
Claim notification deadline
The policyholder must notify WGV of any loss event that could give rise to a claim within one week; third-party claims asserted out of court must likewise be reported within one week of being raised.
Bonus-malus rules
Premiums follow a no-claims (Schadenfreiheitsklassen, SF) rating system re-evaluated each 1 January based on the prior calendar year's claims history, with published tables of SF classes, premium percentages, and step-up/step-down rules per vehicle type; an optional 'Rabattschutz' add-on allows one claim per year without step-down. In the BASIS tariff for cars, a claim-related step-down of the MTPL premium is regularly steeper than in the OPTIMAL tariff.
