Legal Defence / Legal Expenses

Excluded

Standalone legal defence insurance is not included in the Groupama MTPL product. Legal representation costs are covered only as part of the third-party liability indemnity limits (i.e., the costs form part of the overall bodily injury or property damage cap, not a separate cover).

Green Card (International Motor Insurance Certificate)

Covered

A Green Card can be requested free of charge from Groupama (online or at service centres) for travel outside the EU/EEA. Within EU/EEA countries the Hungarian licence plate itself serves as proof of valid MTPL coverage. A Green Card is mandatory for travel to non-EU green card system countries (e.g. Turkey, Ukraine). The policy territorial scope covers EEA member states and green card system countries with bilateral agreements with the Hungarian National Bureau.

Roadside Assistance (Groupama Gépjármű-asszisztencia)

Covered

Free 24/7 roadside assistance included with every valid individual or fleet MTPL policy for passenger cars, motorcycles, and vans/buses up to 3,500 kg GVW. Service limit: 100,000 HUF per insurance year. Coverage includes: dispatch of mechanic or recovery vehicle to the scene (within 1 hour guaranteed on-site for domestic breakdowns), on-site repair labour costs (once per insurance year), towing to nearest workshop if vehicle cannot be repaired on-site, vehicle storage, replacement car rental, overnight accommodation, and continuation/return travel for insured persons. The service organisation covers Hungary and listed European countries. Cost reimbursement (storage cost, guaranteed service penalty) applies to Hungary only. In individual contracts, if the service provider fails to arrive within 1 hour, Groupama waives 3 months' MTPL premium. Not applicable to racing cars, vehicles towed by insured vehicle, theft/vandalism events, vehicles without valid roadworthiness, drivers without valid licence, or events caused intentionally or with gross negligence.

Driver Accident Cover

Excluded

The Groupama MTPL product does not include personal accident cover for the at-fault driver. The policy explicitly excludes damage to the insured vehicle and its driver (the policyholder) as a covered loss. Separate personal accident or casco insurance is required for driver protection.

Passenger Accident / Third-Party Bodily Injury to Passengers

Conditional

Passengers travelling in the at-fault vehicle are covered as injured third parties under the MTPL bodily injury liability limit (max 6,070,000 EUR per event), provided their injury claims arise from an accident caused by the insured vehicle operator. However, damage claims arising between co-insured persons (e.g. mutual property damage claims between passengers and the policyholder) are excluded. Hitchhiker claims are also excluded under the roadside assistance component.

Key conditions

territorial_scope

The policy is valid in all EEA member states and Switzerland, as well as in green card system countries with which the Hungarian National Bureau (Nemzeti Iroda) has concluded bilateral agreements under the Internal Regulations. Within the EU/EEA the Hungarian licence plate serves as proof of cover; a Green Card is required for non-EU green card countries.

green_card_rules

The Green Card (international motor insurance certificate) can be requested free of charge from Groupama online or at service centres. It is mandatory for travel outside the EU/EEA to non-EU green card system countries (e.g. Turkey, Ukraine). Within EU/EEA the Hungarian licence plate is sufficient proof of valid MTPL coverage, and police can verify cover electronically via the central policy registry.

driver_restrictions

The insurer retains the right of recourse (visszkereset) against: (a) the driver who drove without the operator's permission; (b) any insured person who caused damage intentionally; (c) the driver under the influence of alcohol or impairing substances; (d) the driver without a valid driving licence; (e) the operator if the accident was caused by severely neglected vehicle condition; (f) the driver who failed to render assistance. Recourse amounts are capped (e.g. max HUF 5,000,000 for alcohol/drugs or failure to render assistance; max HUF 1,500,000 for no licence or severely neglected vehicle; max HUF 500,000 for non-intentional breach of disclosure/notification duties).

claim_notification_deadline

The injured party must notify the insurer of a loss event as soon as possible, but no later than 30 days after the event (or from becoming aware of it). For foreign-country events, the deadline runs from the date of return to Hungary. The at-fault insured must notify the insurer in writing within 5 business days. The insurer must make a reasoned indemnity proposal within 15 days of receiving all required documents, or within 3 months of the claim submission at the latest. Payment must be made within 15 days of the injured party accepting the proposal, or following final court judgment.

bonus_malus_rules

The bonus-malus system applies to passenger cars, motorcycles, buses, trucks, tractors, and agricultural tractors. It consists of one base class (A00), 10 bonus classes (B01–B10) and 4 malus classes (M01–M04). New entrants start at A00. To advance one bonus class, the policy must have been valid and claim-free for at least 270 days in the preceding insurance period. A malus surcharge is applied in the following insurance period for each first payment made in the current period. The classification follows the policyholder (operator), not the vehicle. Bonus classification earned is preserved for up to 2 years after policy termination (same vehicle category only); it cannot be transferred across vehicle categories or following non-payment termination.
