Direct payment

AXA applies the Italian direct compensation procedure (risarcimento diretto) under D.P.R. 254/2006: non-responsible or partially non-responsible claimants may claim directly from their own insurer. Applicable only to two-vehicle accidents both regularly insured and registered in Italy with both drivers identified. AXA commits to settling or communicating the reasons for non-settlement within the statutory deadlines (30/60/90 days). AXA also commits to paying vehicle damage claims within 21 days of the accident report.

Unique selling points

  • Optional 'RCA Plus' extension covers uninsured vehicle damages directly, avoiding any claim to the Road Victims Fund and ensuring immediate settlement.
  • Innovative OFF state feature allows policyholders to temporarily suspend mandatory MTPL coverage when the vehicle is not in use, significantly reducing the annual premium cost.
  • Optional satellite Drive Tutor device enables dynamic reconstruction of accidents, provides 24/7 assistance services and may generate a personalized premium based on actual mileage driven.
  • AXA commits to settling vehicle damage claims within 21 days of the accident report, a faster settlement timeframe than the statutory 30-day minimum required by Italian law.
  • Dedicated GreenDrive package provides comprehensive coverage specifically designed for plug-in hybrid and electric vehicles, including charging cable damage, Wallbox accessories and on-site recharging assistance unavailable in standard market offerings.

Key conditions

territorial_scope

Coverage applies in Italy, Vatican City, San Marino, Switzerland, Monaco, Andorra, Serbia, all EEA states, and other Green Card system countries whose international codes are not crossed out on the AXA-issued international insurance certificate. Coverage operates within the limits of national compulsory MTPL legislation of each territory; Italian policy limits apply only in Italy.

green_card_rules

The Green Card (international insurance certificate) is issued by AXA upon the policyholder's request and is valid for the same insurance period for which the premium has been paid. If the policy ceases or is suspended during the coverage period, the policyholder must immediately return the Green Card to AXA. AXA retains the right of recourse for amounts paid to third parties as a consequence of the policyholder's failure to return the Green Card.

driver_restrictions

The insurance is not operative if the driver is not licensed under applicable regulations. In case of an expired licence, coverage remains operative provided the driver renews within 3 months of the incident. Optional 'Guida Esperta' restriction: up to EUR 2,000 per incident franchise applies if the driver is under 26 years of age or has held a licence for less than two years.

claim_notification_deadline

The policyholder must report the claim in writing to AXA within 3 days of the incident occurrence (or from when they became aware of it), providing date, time, location, accident dynamics, vehicle details, driver information (including personal data and driving licence), insurance policy details, and any witnesses. Use of the standardized 'blue form' (friendly accident report / CID) is recommended. Failure to report within 3 days may result in the right of recourse by AXA for amounts paid to third parties due to prejudice suffered, pursuant to art. 1915 C.C.

bonus_malus_rules

The policy uses the Italian Bonus-Malus merit class system (Classe CU - Conversione Universale, per ISVAP/IVASS Regulation No. 4 of 9 August 2006). Premium is adjusted annually based on claims during the observation period. The observation period begins on the policy inception date and ends 2 months before the first full annual premium expiry, with subsequent periods of 12 months. Two or more claims during the same observation period result in a premium increase according to the universal correspondence scale. Policyholders may reimburse AXA for settled claims to avoid premium increases (facoltà di rimborso). The Bersani Law allows transfer of the most favorable CU class within a cohabiting family unit.
