Compagnia Italiana di Previdenza, Assicurazioni e Riassicurazioni S.p.A. (Italiana Assicurazioni)
Italiana
Italiana is a motor third-party liability insurance for the Italy market with no online purchase and 24/7 assistance.
Direct payment
Italiana has agreements with a network of partner body shops (Carrozzerie convenzionate) allowing direct settlement of repairs instead of cash reimbursement to the policyholder. Using a partner body shop for Atti Vandalici/Eventi Sociopolitici and Calamità Naturali claims halves the applicable deductible and minimum uncovered amount.
Geographic scope
Italy
Covers the territory of the Italian Republic, Vatican City, San Marino, all EU Member States, Andorra, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, Monaco, Serbia and Switzerland, and extends to all Green Card system states whose abbreviations are not crossed out on the Green Card.
Unique selling points
- Legal protection cover rises to €100,000 per case (vs. the standard €30,000) specifically for actions to recover personal-injury damages from road accidents.
- 24/7 pan-European roadside assistance via Blue Assistance, including ambulance dispatch, difficult vehicle recovery, hotel stays and funeral repatriation with itemised guaranteed sub-limits.
- A guaranteed 'Rendita 4x4' monthly annuity of €4,000 for 4 years if the driver suffers permanent disability of 65% or more from a road accident.
- Deductible on Storm/Natural-Catastrophe and Vandalism claims is automatically halved when repairs are carried out at Italiana's network of partner body shops.
- Recourse (rivalsa) against the insured for drink-driving is contractually capped (e.g. €2,500-€5,000) rather than unlimited, reducing the driver's personal financial exposure versus the statutory default.
Coverage limits
Bodily Injury Liability
Covered
No limit stated
Italiana indemnifies the insured, within the limits ('massimali') agreed in the policy, for amounts owed as civilly liable for damages unintentionally caused to third parties from circulation of the insured vehicle, including on private land. A specific limit of €3,000,000 applies to non-public civil and military airport zones. Racing/competition use is excluded.
Property Damage Liability
Covered
No limit stated
Property damage liability is covered under the same policy-agreed limits ('massimali') as bodily injury, with priority of allocation first to compulsory-insurance claims. The €3,000,000 special limit for non-public airport zones applies equally to property damage.
Legal Protection (Formula Èlite)
€30,000 – €100,000
Only in Formula Èlite
Legal protection under the 'Formula Èlite' section covers legal fees, technical consultants, court costs and mediation indemnities up to €30,000 per case, raised to €100,000 per case for actions to recover personal-injury damages arising from circulation of vehicles or watercraft. Managed by ARAG SE on Italiana's behalf; free choice of lawyer for the judicial phase.
Green Card
Covered
Italiana issues the international Green Card certificate for driving abroad, valid for the period stated on it. Cover continues for the 15-day grace period after a premium instalment's due date, provided the vehicle is not insured elsewhere. The Green Card must be returned to the insurer if the underlying policy ceases or is suspended.
Roadside Assistance (Assistenza in Viaggio)
Optional

Driver Personal Accident
Optional
Covers the driver of the insured vehicle for accidents connected to its circulation. The main death/permanent-disability sum insured is set in the policy (not disclosed here); fixed ancillary benefits include €10,400 for HIV infection from a required transfusion, a death sum increased by 50% (max €260,000) in case of commorienza with spouse/partner, an annual Rendita Vitalizia of €6,200 for permanent disability ≥60%, and a 'Rendita 4x4' of €4,000/month for 4 years for permanent disability ≥65%. Deductible bands of 3%/5%/10% apply above €77,500 and €155,000 of the capital tranches; disability ≥70% is treated as total.
Passenger Personal Accident
Excluded
The policy's Sezione VI 'Infortuni del Conducente' insures only the driver of the vehicle, not transported passengers. Passengers injured in an accident are treated as third parties under the compulsory RC Auto liability guarantee, subject to the exclusions listed for excluded persons; no dedicated passenger personal-accident sum is provided.
Key conditions
Territorial scope
Italy, Vatican City, San Marino, all EU states, Andorra, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, Monaco, Serbia and Switzerland; extended to all Green Card system states not crossed out on the Green Card for the Damage and Driver Accident sections.
Green card rules
The Green Card is issued for circulation abroad and is valid for the period stated. It must be returned immediately if the underlying policy ceases or is suspended; using it after cessation/suspension is unlawful.
Driver restrictions
The driver must be duly licensed under current regulations; the insurer exercises recourse (rivalsa) against the insured for unlicensed driving, driving under the influence of alcohol (Art. 186/186bis Codice della Strada, capped at €2,500-€5,000 depending on circumstances, always full recourse for buses/articulated vehicles) or drugs (Art. 187), and other listed breaches, with several statutory waivers of recourse for specific circumstances (e.g. minor family members driving without the owner's knowledge).
Claim notification deadline
Claims must be reported to the assigned Intermediary or Italiana's head office within 3 days of the event or of becoming aware of it (Art. 143 Codice; applies to RC, Damage and Driver Accident sections).
Bonus-malus rules
35-class Bonus/Malus system with class-specific premium coefficients. New vehicles (first registration) enter at class 28 (goods-transport Sector IV) or class 29 (operating-machinery/agricultural Sectors VI-VII); absence of proof of prior history assigns class 35. Evolution after each annual renewal follows a fixed claims-count table; policyholders may buy back paid claims at renewal to avoid/reduce the malus.
