Direct payment

Unipol operates a direct settlement/direct repair system: under the CARD 'Risarcimento Diretto' procedure the insurer pays its own policyholder directly for claims where liability lies with the other party, and under 'Riparazione Diretta' the insurer repairs the vehicle in kind through the UnipolService network when the insured is not at fault and repair is not uneconomic.

Geographic scope

Italy (nationwide)

Italy, Vatican City, San Marino, EU member states, Andorra, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Montenegro, Norway, Monaco, United Kingdom, Serbia, Switzerland, and other Green Card System countries not crossed out on the certificate (Azerbaijan, Moldova, North Macedonia, Tunisia, Turkey, Ukraine).

Unique selling points

  • Selectable liability limits up to €80 million for personal injury and €20 million for property damage, far above Italy's statutory minimums.
  • Free policy suspension for up to 10 months per insurance year (11 months for historic and collectible vehicles) whenever the car is not in use.
  • Premium can be split into monthly instalments via recurring SEPA direct debit, credit card or debit card.
  • Riparazione Diretta through the UnipolService network grants an upfront premium discount plus a further €40 discount at renewal, no out-of-pocket cost when the insured is not at fault, and repairs guaranteed for up to 10 years.
  • Several rivalsa (recovery-right) waivers are included at no extra cost, such as an expired licence renewed within 120 days or a first drink-driving claim capped at 10% of the damage (max €500).

Coverage limits

Bodily Injury Liability

€6,450,000 – €80,000,000

Statutory minimum of €6,450,000 per claim for personal injury; the Contraente can negotiate a higher Massimale up to €80,000,000 per claim.

Property Damage Liability

€1,300,000 – €20,000,000

Statutory minimum of €1,300,000 per claim for property damage, independent of the number of persons involved; negotiable up to a maximum of €20,000,000 per claim.

Legal Defence Costs

25% of insured sum

Unipol may assume the defence of disputes on the Assicurato's behalf; defence costs incurred to resist claims are borne by Unipol up to an amount equal to one quarter of the insured Massimale. If the amount due to the injured party exceeds that Massimale, costs are split between Unipol and the Contraente/Assicurato in proportion to their respective interest.

Green Card (International Insurance Certificate)

Covered

Unipol issues the Green Card at each renewal, valid for the same period for which the premium or premium instalment has been paid; it certifies valid R.C.A. cover and automatically adapts it to the legislation of other Green Card System countries not crossed out on the certificate, if that legislation provides greater protection to the injured party.

Roadside Assistance

Optional

No limit stated

Roadside assistance ('Assistenza Stradale') is a separate, addable guarantee within the Unipol UNICA Veicoli e Mobilità offering, activatable via the reserved area/app; it is not part of the base R.C.A. Autovetture section and no coverage limit is stated in the R.C.A. policy documentation reviewed.

Driver Personal Accident

Excluded

Personal injury and property damage suffered by the driver responsible for the accident are expressly excluded from R.C.A. cover, since the driver is not considered a 'Terzo' (third party) under the policy.

Passenger Bodily Injury (RC Trasportati)

Covered

Bodily injury suffered by transported passengers is covered within the R.C.A. Massimale regardless of the title under which transport is provided, including passengers on wheelchairs during boarding/alighting operations carried out with mechanical means; no separate personal-accident limit applies.

Key conditions

Territorial scope

The R.C.A. cover operates in Italy, Vatican City, San Marino, EU member states, Andorra, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Montenegro, Norway, Monaco, United Kingdom, Serbia, Switzerland, and Green Card System states not crossed out on the certificate.

Green card rules

The Green Card certifies valid R.C.A. cover and automatically adapts it to the legislation of other Green Card System member countries if that legislation offers greater protection to the injured party; it is valid for the same period as the paid premium or premium instalment.

Driver restrictions

Policyholders may choose 'Guida Libera' (no restriction on who drives) or the discounted 'Guida Esperta' option, which requires the driver to be at least 26 years old with a licence held for at least 3 years and the vehicle owner aged between 26 and 65; failure to meet these conditions triggers a rivalsa (recovery right) of up to €3,000 per claim.

Claim notification deadline

The policyholder or insured must notify Unipol of a claim immediately and in any case within 3 days of the event, using the Constatazione Amichevole di Incidente form; failure to comply may result in total or partial loss of the right to indemnity.

Bonus-malus rules

Premium follows a 19-class internal Bonus/Malus scale linked to the ANIA universal merit class (C.U.); at each annual renewal the internal class worsens by +2 to +11 positions depending on the number of at-fault or 51%+ jointly-liable claims settled in the observation period, or improves by -1 with no claims. Optional 'Bonus/Malus con Franchigia' and 'Azzera Sinistro' extensions can apply a fixed excess or exclude one at-fault claim per renewal from the internal class calculation.
