Direct payment

The insurer organizes and pays for medical repatriation and evacuation directly when pre-authorized. For other medical expenses, the insured pays out-of-pocket and submits claims for reimbursement, unless the insurer has pre-authorized direct settlement with the medical facility. In EEA/Swiss medical facilities, the EHIC card must be presented first; insurance acts as a supplement.

COVID-19 is treated as a pandemic/epidemic. Medical assistance coverage applies within 14 days of a pandemic event if travel commenced before the event. General pandemic exclusion applies for new travel to affected destinations after warnings. COVID-19 emergency medical costs are covered within the medical expenses insured sum if the conditions of clause 2.1.5 are met.

Pre-existing conditions

Excluded

The policy covers only acute illness (sudden and unforeseen deterioration of health that could not have been anticipated at the start of travel). Pre-existing chronic conditions are not explicitly covered and are effectively excluded, as the definition of 'illness' requires that it could not have been foreseen. Exacerbations of known conditions are not covered.

Source

Winter sports / higher-risk activities cover

Optional

Downhill skiing and snowboarding are classified as 'higher-risk activities' and are only covered when the corresponding mark is made in the insurance policy. Without this notation, injuries during skiing/snowboarding are excluded. Off-piste skiing, heli-skiing, and snowboarding are classified as 'extreme activities' and require separate explicit agreement.

Source

Adventure / higher-risk and extreme sports cover

Optional

Higher-risk activities (e.g. diving up to 30m with PADI, rafting up to category IV, mountain trekking up to 5000m, paragliding, kite surfing) require explicit notation in the policy. Extreme activities (e.g. alpinism above 5000m, cave diving, shark diving, heli-skiing, extreme racing) require separate special agreement beyond standard higher-risk add-on. Activities at altitude up to 3000m during daylight are low-risk and covered by default.

Pregnancy complications

Conditional

Expenses related to pregnancy complications are covered if the planned end date of the trip does not exceed week 28 of pregnancy AND there have been no prior pregnancy complications or physician-imposed activity restrictions. Expenses related to pregnancy, abortion or childbirth are excluded if the planned trip end date is after week 28, or if there have been prior complications.

Must be explicitly selected in the policy.

Source

Key conditions

Assistance call deadline

In the event of an insured risk, the insured must call the assistance number on the policy immediately. Formal claim must be submitted within 1 month of the notification of the insured event (electronically via www.if.lv). Notification to the insurer must occur no later than 3 business days from when it became possible.

Unauthorized treatment

Medical expenses already covered by the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) are not reimbursed by the policy. The insured must present the EHIC when receiving treatment in EEA or Swiss medical institutions. Failure to use the EHIC where applicable means those costs are excluded from the claim.

Purchase while abroad

The insurance contract must be concluded before the start of the trip, i.e., before crossing the border of Latvia or the country of permanent residence. However, the contract may be concluded within 48 hours after the start of the trip, in which case the policy takes effect 72 hours after conclusion. If concluded after the trip start for only part of the trip, the contract is void.

Chronic conditions

Chronic diseases and pre-existing conditions are not covered, as the policy definition of 'illness' requires that it be an acute, sudden, and unforeseeable deterioration of health that the insured could not have anticipated at the start of travel. Exacerbation of known chronic conditions is therefore excluded.

Pregnancy

Pregnancy-related expenses are covered only if the planned end date of the trip does not exceed week 28 of pregnancy AND there have been no prior pregnancy complications or physician-imposed restrictions. Coverage is excluded if the trip end date is after week 28 or if prior complications existed.

pre_existing_conditions

Only acute, sudden and unforeseeable illness is covered. Pre-existing and chronic conditions are excluded because they do not meet the policy definition of 'illness' (must be unforeseeable at trip start). Acute onset of pre-existing conditions is not covered under this product unless it qualifies as a fully new, unforeseeable event.

coverage_duration_limit

Single-trip coverage is limited to a maximum of 45 consecutive calendar days per trip. For business travel (employer as policyholder), long-term policies cover individual trips up to 365 consecutive calendar days. Annual multi-trip policies allow unlimited trips, each up to 45 days maximum.
