Territorial scope | Coverage is valid in all EEA member states and Switzerland. Upon policyholder request, a Green Card can be issued extending coverage to other Green Card system member states. Damages caused in other EEA states or Switzerland are paid according to the limits specified in the Lithuanian MTPL Law if these are higher than local limits. | The MTPL contract is valid in all countries listed on the insurance certificate. This is typically all EU member states and the Swiss Confederation, or all EU member states, the Swiss Confederation, and all Green Card system states. The Green Card is automatically included; its validity depends on the territorial option selected in the contract. | Both standard (įprastinė) and border (pasienio) MTPL contracts provide coverage in all EEA member states and Switzerland. On request, a Green Card is issued for standard annual contracts, extending coverage to other Green Card system member states (except Russia and Belarus, and states whose codes are crossed out in field 8 of the Green Card). Damage caused in other Green Card states is compensated according to those states' statutory limits; if the accident occurs in another EEA state or Switzerland, Lithuanian statutory limits apply if higher. | The standard compulsory insurance certificate is valid in all EU/EEA member states, Switzerland, Andorra, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Gibraltar, Montenegro, the United Kingdom, Liechtenstein, Monaco, San Marino, Serbia and Vatican. Damage caused in other Green Card system countries is compensated according to the minimum insured sums of those countries. Damage caused in another EEA state or Switzerland is paid according to Lithuanian statutory sums if these are higher. Citizenship, place of residence of vehicle operators and territory of vehicle use within EU/EEA/Switzerland may not be used as risk increase factors. |
Green card rules | The standard MTPL contract automatically covers all EEA countries and Switzerland. A Green Card extending coverage to additional non-EEA Green Card system countries can be issued at the policyholder's request based on the existing standard contract. The Green Card is valid and provides coverage in the countries listed on it. | The Green Card is automatically issued and is required when travelling to certain non-EU countries. For Green Card system countries outside the EU, the Green Card must be carried. The list of Green Card system member states is published by Compensa. Coverage limits and claims procedures may differ in non-EU territories. | A Green Card is issued free of charge at the policyholder's request based on a concluded or pending standard annual MTPL contract. The Green Card is valid and provides coverage in the countries listed on the card. It does not cover Russia and Belarus. Border contracts (15–90 days) cover EEA and Switzerland but do not generate a Green Card for third countries. | If the policyholder wishes coverage in Green Card system countries under a standard compulsory insurance contract, the insurer issues a Green Card under the conditions set in the insurance contract. A Green Card valid only in EU/EEA states, Switzerland and other states listed in Article 10(2) of the Compulsory Insurance Law must be issued free of charge. The Green Card takes effect at 00:00 on the date indicated on it. |
Driver restrictions | The insurer has the right to recover paid indemnity amounts from the at-fault driver in cases such as: driving under the influence, fleeing the scene of the accident, intentional damage, driving without a valid licence for the appropriate vehicle category, failure to timely notify the insurer of the accident, or material breach of contract conditions. | The MTPL contract is concluded with the vehicle owner. The policyholder may also be a person using the vehicle under a leasing agreement. All lawful operators of the vehicle may drive it, but the minimum driving experience and age of potential drivers must be stated when concluding the contract. Insurance in another person's name is not permitted, except for leasing/hire-purchase arrangements. | Any person using the insured vehicle with the owner's consent is covered as an insured party. The insurer has the right of recourse against the at-fault driver in cases such as: driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, driving without a valid driving licence of the appropriate category, fleeing the accident scene, causing damage intentionally, failure to timely notify the insurer of the accident, or using the vehicle for taxi/ride-hailing services not declared in the policy. | All operators (drivers) using the vehicle specified in the insurance contract or certificate are covered. There are no named-driver restrictions under Lithuanian compulsory MTPL. However, the insurer has the right of recovery against the at-fault driver in cases specified by law, such as driving under the influence, driving without a valid driving licence of the required category, fleeing the accident scene, or intentional damage. |
Claim notification deadline | The insured must report the traffic accident to the insurance company within 3 working days from the date of the accident. Police must be notified immediately in cases required by Road Traffic Rules. Any received claim or court action for compensation must be reported to the insurer within 5 working days. | The insured must notify the insurer of a traffic accident in which they are the at-fault party, as required by the Law of the Republic of Lithuania on Compulsory Insurance of Civil Liability of Vehicle Owners. If the insured party fails to fulfil its statutory obligations or fulfils them improperly, the insurer is entitled to reclaim up to 20% of the insurance benefit paid from the vehicle operator. | The insured must notify their insurer within 3 business days of the traffic accident. Within 5 business days, the insured must notify the insurer of any received claim or lawsuit for damages. Notification to police is required in cases mandated by Road Traffic Rules. Electronic accident declaration can be filed at draudimoivykiai.lt or via the self-service portal mano.ergo.lt. | The insured must register the traffic accident event within 3 working days via the insurer's website www.gjensidige.lt (or via the self-service portal) or by calling 1626. Additionally, within 5 working days the insured must notify the insurer of any received claim or court action for damages. At the accident scene, the accident declaration form must be completed, or where required by road traffic rules, the police must be notified immediately. |
Bonus malus rules | The MTPL premium in Lithuania is regulated by law and takes into account the driver's and co-drivers' age, driving experience, vehicle engine power, registration location, and claims history (bonus-malus system). A claims-free year may result in a premium discount upon renewal; a claim may result in a premium surcharge. | The MTPL premium depends on driving experience, vehicle type and power, insurance period, claims history, and other risk factors. Additional discounts are applied to loyal and disciplined (claim-free) drivers. An extra discount is also available if the policyholder or their spouse holds another valid voluntary insurance contract (accident, CASCO, or home/property insurance) with Compensa. | MTPL premiums in Lithuania are calculated individually, taking into account the driver's claims history and driving experience (bonus-malus system). Disciplined drivers with no claims receive lower premiums; drivers with claims history pay higher premiums. The insurer calculates the premium based on vehicle age, engine power, driver age, and driving experience. The policyholder is obliged to notify the insurer of any changes in driving experience or risk. | The insurance premium is calculated by the insurer taking into account the coverage provided and being proportional to the insurer's obligations under the contract. The insurer must individually assess circumstances indicated by the policyholder that are relevant to premium calculation. Driving discipline history (claims history) is a relevant factor in premium calculation. Upon request, the insurer must issue free of charge a certificate of claims history for at least the last 5 years of contractual relations within 15 days of receiving the written request. |

Direct payment policy | BTA pays repair partners directly for vehicle repairs; if the policyholder does not wish to use a repair partner, the indemnity is transferred to the bank account specified by the claimant. | Compensa pays repair costs directly to authorised repair shops. Alternatively, if the claimant opts for a cash payout, the indemnity is transferred to their bank account. A replacement vehicle may also be arranged directly through Compensa. | Claims are paid directly to the injured third party by the liable insurer. The insured (at-fault driver) does not receive payment; the insurer pays the victim directly and may recover amounts from the insured in cases of gross breach (e.g. drunk driving, no valid licence, fleeing the scene). | Claims are paid directly to injured third parties (not to the policyholder). The insurer pays compensation to third parties harmed in traffic accidents caused by the insured vehicle's operator. The insurer may recover paid amounts from the at-fault person in cases specified by the Compulsory Insurance Law. |
