Direct payment

The insurer pays the indemnity directly to the injured third party (or their estate) for bodily injury and property damage caused by the insured vehicle; the policyholder does not need to pay the victim first and seek reimbursement.

Coverage is valid in all European Union and European Economic Area member states and in Switzerland; can be extended to other Green Card system countries by requesting a Green Card.

Key conditions

Territorial scope

Both regular and border-insurance MTPL contracts provide cover in all European Economic Area states and Switzerland; at the policyholder's request a Green Card extends validity to other Green Card system countries.

Green card rules

A Green Card can be issued together with a new or existing regular MTPL contract at the policyholder's request; it is valid and provides insurance cover only in the countries specified on the card itself.

Driver restrictions

MTPL insures the civil liability of whoever operates the insured vehicle; however, indemnity is not paid to a third party who voluntarily rode in the at-fault vehicle knowing it was stolen, and the insurer can seek recourse from a driver who was intoxicated, fled the scene, acted intentionally, lacked the appropriate driving licence category, or otherwise materially breached the contract.

Claim notification deadline

The policyholder must immediately notify the police where required by the traffic rules, must notify the insurer of the accident within 3 business days, and must notify the insurer within 5 business days of receiving any claim or lawsuit for damages.

Bonus-malus rules

Not detailed in the reviewed If documents; premium pricing generally reflects the driver's accident and insurance history per market practice, but no specific bonus-malus class table is provided in these sources.
