Key conditions

territorial_scope

The MTPL policy is valid in Lithuania and all countries participating in the Green Card system, including all EEA member states and Switzerland. A standard contract is concluded for Lithuanian-registered vehicles. Border insurance (15–90 days) is also available for non-resident vehicles.

green_card_rules

The Green Card (international motor insurance certificate) is issued as proof of valid MTPL coverage for travel abroad. It is valid in all Green Card system member countries. Lithuanian member companies of the Motor Insurers' Bureau (CAB) are authorised to issue Green Cards. The policy automatically covers EEA countries; a physical Green Card must be carried when travelling outside Lithuania.

driver_restrictions

The MTPL contract covers civil liability of the insured and any other person lawfully driving the insured vehicle. There are no named driver restrictions under standard Lithuanian MTPL law; any person driving with the owner's permission is covered. However, the Bonus-Malus class is assigned to the vehicle owner/registered holder and influences the premium.

claim_notification_deadline

In the event of a traffic accident, notify the police immediately where required by road traffic rules. Within 3 working days of the accident, notify your insurer in writing (if you are at fault) or the at-fault party's insurer (if you are the victim). Within 5 working days, notify your insurer in writing of any claim or legal action filed against you for compensation.

bonus_malus_rules

The Bonus-Malus system is managed centrally by the Motor Insurers' Bureau of the Republic of Lithuania (CAB). The BM class is calculated based on the vehicle owner's insurance history (number of insurance days and at-fault claims over the last 11 years). A new insured starts at class 6 (neutral). Classes 7–17 attract premium discounts (Bonus); classes 1–5 attract premium loadings (Malus). BM classes are recalculated annually on 15 September.
