Key conditions
Territorial scope
The policy is valid in all countries listed on the Green Card that are not crossed out. Abroad, the laws and regulations of the respective country apply. The policy stops if the policyholder moves to a foreign address or stays abroad for more than 1 year. The policy also stops if the car is abroad for more than 180 consecutive days.Coverage applies in all countries listed on the International Motor Insurance Certificate (Green Card / Groene Kaart) that are not crossed out. Where the applicable foreign law (equivalent to the Dutch WAM) has broader provisions, those provisions also apply to this policy.Coverage applies in all countries listed on the International Insurance Certificate (formerly Green Card) that are not crossed out. The coverage territory may be adjusted on the advice of the Dutch Motor Insurers Bureau (Nederlands Bureau Motorrijtuigverzekeraars). For the Rechtsbijstand module, some conflict types are only covered in the Netherlands.
Green card rules
A Green Card is issued free of charge as the international certificate of insurance. Coverage applies in all countries listed on the Green Card (not crossed out), in accordance with local laws. Bond costs abroad (car impounded or insured detained) are covered up to €100,000 per event, provided the damage is insured and the insured assists in recovering the amount.A Green Card (International Motor Insurance Certificate) is issued free of charge with the policy and is required for travel in countries where it is compulsory. Coverage is only valid in countries listed on the card and not crossed out. A bail bond of up to €50,000 may be provided by ASR to secure the insured's release, return of driving licence, or lifting of seizure of the vehicle in a foreign country; this amount must be repaid as soon as it is released. An International Insurance Certificate is issued with every policy and is available digitally via mijn.nn or the NN App. It can be printed or stored digitally on a mobile device. The policyholder should verify before travel whether a paper version is mandatory in the countries visited.
Driver restrictions
The driver must have a valid driving licence and be authorised to drive by the vehicle owner. Drivers under the 2toDrive rules must comply with those rules. No coverage if the driver: lacks a valid licence; is prohibited from driving by law or court order; is prohibited from driving by the vehicle owner; or does not comply with 2toDrive rules. The vehicle must be registered in the name of the policyholder, cohabiting partner, resident child, or step-parent with whom the policyholder lives, or a lease company. No coverage if the vehicle is registered in a company name (except via a separate business insurance). The driver must hold a valid driving licence for the vehicle category at the time of the incident. Exceptions apply if the licence expired no more than 1 year ago, if the driver recently passed their test but has not yet received the licence, if driving under supervised conditions, if the licence was stolen or lost, or if the policyholder can prove they had no knowledge of the situation. Coverage is excluded when the driver is under the influence of alcohol above legal limits (0.5‰ for licence holders >5 years; 0.2‰ for newer drivers), medication, or drugs. Refusing a breath or blood test also results in exclusion. The vehicle must be driven by a licensed driver with a Dutch-valid driving licence. Cover is excluded if the driver had no valid licence, was disqualified, was under 18 without a supervising coach, or was driving under the influence of alcohol, drugs, nitrous oxide or medication to a degree that a driving ban was (or would have been) imposed. An expired licence is not excluded if the driver was under 76 years old.
Claim notification deadline
The insured must report the damage as soon as possible via the app, online or by telephone. The insured must provide full cooperation, forward all information immediately, do nothing detrimental to the insurer, and (in case of joyriding, embezzlement or theft) file a police report. The insured must forward the police report as quickly as possible.Damage must be reported as soon as the policyholder becomes aware of it. Claims reported after 36 months receive no compensation. For third-party liability claims made against the insured within the statutory limitation period, the insured has 36 months to file a claim with ASR. Disputes against ASR's final decision must also be raised within 36 months of receiving the decision.Damage must be reported to NN as soon as possible. For criminal offences such as theft, joyriding, break-in or vandalism, or when the vehicle was struck by an unknown driver, a police report must be filed immediately. Failure to report in time and resulting prejudice to NN may result in partial or full denial of the claim.
Bonus malus rules
The bonus-malus system uses a 30-step ladder. The starting step depends on the number of claim-free years. With 0 claim-free years, the policyholder starts at step 6. Each claim-free year moves the policyholder up one step (bonus). Each paid claim causes a step reduction (malus), as detailed in Appendix 1. The maximum discount at step 30 is 79%; at step 1 a surcharge of 15% applies. Claim-free years are registered with Roy-Data (shared database accessible to all Dutch insurers). Certain events (e.g. damage to upholstery due to transporting injured persons, collision with a cyclist or pedestrian not attributable to the insured) have no impact on claim-free years.ASR uses a 31-step no-claim ladder. Policyholders start at step 5 with 0 claim-free years (50% discount). The maximum discount of 75% is reached from step 21 onwards. After reaching step 31 (maximum), up to 5 extra steps can be accumulated. Following a recoverable claim, the policyholder drops 5 steps. Certain events do not affect the ladder: assistance, breakdown, pick-up/drop-off service, glass damage, theft, storm damage when fully recovered from third party, or accidents where the driver/passenger is blameless. Claim-free year data is tracked via the national Roy-data system.A no-claim discount of up to 80% is accumulated through claim-free years (schadevrije jaren), tracked in the central Roy-data database. Each claim-free year advances one step on the 26-step bonus-malus ladder. Each claim reduces the tally by 5 claim-free years (or to -5 for four or more claims in one year). Policyholders with 20 or more claim-free years who suffer a paid claim fall back to 10 claim-free years. The no-claim discount does not apply to optional add-on modules. Claim-free years remain valid for 4 years after policy cancellation.
Proof and next steps
Direct payment policy
Centraal Beheer handles all claims and pays the injured third party directly. The insurer has the lead in settling damages, may pay the other party directly, and may make agreements with the counterparty. In case of legal obligation (WAM or foreign law), the insurer pays even if the policyholder did not comply with policy conditions.ASR assesses and settles third-party liability claims directly with the injured party. ASR may pay third parties directly or reach settlements with them. For roadside assistance and breakdown, the Alarmcentrale (030-6990708) coordinates all services 24/7.For third-party bodily injury and property damage claims under WA, NN pays the counterparty directly and may settle with them without the policyholder's prior consent. Damage to insured's own vehicle is not covered under the WA tier.
