Direct payment

For WA claims, Nationale-Nederlanden settles the claim with the injured third party within the limits of the cover and may pay compensation directly to that third party or reach a settlement with them.

Geographic scope

Netherlands (nationwide)

Coverage applies in all countries listed on the International Insurance Certificate (Green Card) that are not crossed out; this generally includes the EU and a number of other European and Mediterranean countries.

Unique selling points

  • 24/7 claims reporting and roadside assistance via the ING Alarmcentrale, both in the Netherlands and abroad.
  • No deductible when repairs are carried out via the Schadegarant or Glasgarant networks, with costs paid directly to the repairer.
  • Daily cancellation right on the policy, even during the first contract year, unlike many competitors that only allow monthly cancellation after year one.
  • No-claim discount can build up to a maximum of 80% for policyholders with many claim-free years.
  • Fast, fully online quote and policy issuance via ing.nl or the ING app, integrated with the customer's existing ING banking products.

Legal assistance (Rechtsbijstand module)

Only in Module Rechtsbijstand

Available as an optional add-on module, provided by DAS. The cost ceiling depends on the type of dispute: unlimited for traffic-accident damage disputes and disputes about contracts related to the car, but capped at €5,000 for criminal traffic proceedings; if the policyholder chooses their own external legal representative instead of DAS's in-house specialist, external costs are capped at €12,500 per event.

Key conditions

Territorial scope

The policy provides cover in all countries listed on the International Insurance Certificate (Green Card) that are not crossed out, generally covering the EU and a number of other European and Mediterranean countries.

Green card rules

Policyholders automatically receive an International Insurance Certificate (formerly the Green Card) when the policy starts, listing the countries in which coverage applies; coverage does not apply to any country crossed out on the certificate.

Driver restrictions

No cover applies if the driver did not hold a valid Dutch driving licence, was disqualified from driving, did not meet special licence conditions, or was driving under the influence of alcohol, drugs, laughing gas or medication to a degree that would result in a driving ban; a licence invalid only because its validity period expired is excepted for drivers under 76.

Claim notification deadline

Claims must be reported to ING as soon as possible; no exact number of days is specified in the policy, but theft, joyriding, break-in, vandalism, or a hit-and-run by an unknown driver must be reported to the police immediately.

Bonus-malus rules

A no-claim discount system based on claim-free years (schadevrije jaren) applies, ranging up to a maximum of 80% for 20 or more claim-free years. One claim-free year is added after a year without a paid claim; a paid claim reduces the number of claim-free years according to a fixed table. Claims fully recovered from a third party and claims under the optional Schade Inzittenden, Rechtsbijstand and Pechhulp modules do not affect the discount.
