Direct payment

For third-party liability claims, the insurer settles directly with the injured party or reaches a settlement, taking the policyholder's interests into account.

Geographic scope

Netherlands

Cover is limited to the Netherlands and the countries shown on (and not crossed out on) the International Motor Insurance Card (Green Card).

Unique selling points

  • A 24/7 dedicated Rhion Verzekeringslijn provides accident assistance any time, day or night.
  • Assistance costs are reimbursed on top of the insured liability sum, not deducted from it.
  • No excess applies to third-party (WAM) liability claims, including the assistance service.
  • If a foreign authority demands bail after an insured incident, the insurer advances up to €50,000.
  • A 24-step no-claim ladder rewards claim-free years with premium discounts of up to 80%.

Coverage limits

Bodily Injury Liability

Covered

No limit stated

Covers injury or death caused to third parties by the insured vehicle when the driver is liable, including damage caused by a coupled trailer or caravan. The insured sum is shown on the policy schedule, and a higher statutory foreign maximum applies abroad where applicable.

Property Damage Liability

Covered

No limit stated

Covers damage to property of third parties caused by the insured vehicle (or a coupled trailer/caravan) when the driver is liable. The insured sum is stated on the policy schedule.

Legal Defence

Covered

If the policyholder is held liable in a lawsuit for damage caused with the car, the insurer pays the legal costs, including legal support, appoints the lawyer and determines the position and strategy; statutory interest on a damages award is also reimbursed. No cap is stated.

Green Card / International Motor Insurance Certificate

Covered

Cover extends to the Netherlands and to the countries listed (and not crossed out) on the International Motor Insurance Card; a higher statutory liability maximum applicable abroad is also covered.

Accident Assistance

Covered

If the insured car (and any coupled trailer) becomes so damaged by an accident, fire, theft or another sudden external event that the driver can no longer drive on, the 24/7 Hulpdienst arranges towing/transport within the Netherlands (and, within Green Card countries, from abroad), storage costs, emergency roadside repair labour (up to €125 abroad), and accommodation costs up to €75 per person per day for a maximum of 10 days, subject to prior authorisation from the Hulpdienst. This does not cover ordinary mechanical breakdown (pech) — that requires the optional Pechhulp cover, which can only be added on top of Beperkt or Volledig Casco.

Driver Accident Cover

Optional

No limit stated

The standard WA liability cover excludes injury to the driver. Injury, death or damage to belongings of the driver (regardless of fault) can be added via the optional Schadeverzekering voor Inzittenden (SVI / occupant accident cover), up to the amount stated on the policy.

Passenger Accident Cover

Optional

No limit stated

Passengers are covered as third parties under WA liability if the driver is at fault. Broader no-fault cover for passenger injury, death or damage to belongings is available via the optional Schadeverzekering voor Inzittenden (SVI), up to the amount stated on the policy.

Key conditions

Territorial scope

Cover applies within the Netherlands and in the countries listed (and not crossed out) on the International Motor Insurance Card (Green Card).

Green card rules

The Green Card / International Motor Insurance Certificate lists the countries where cover applies; if a foreign country within that area has a higher statutory liability maximum than the insured sum, that higher statutory maximum applies.

Driver restrictions

Cover does not apply if the vehicle is driven by an unauthorised driver (no valid licence or a driving ban) or by a driver under the influence of alcohol, drugs, nitrous oxide or medication beyond the legal limit, unless the policyholder can show this happened without their knowledge or against their will.

Claim notification deadline

Report damage to your insurance adviser as soon as possible; if notification is so late that the damage or its cause can no longer be properly established, or recovery from another party is limited, the claim can be refused. In specific cases (theft, break-in, vandalism, joyriding, hit-and-run, fraud, embezzlement) you must report to the police immediately and within 14 days at the latest; vehicle theft must also be reported to the Dutch police within 24 hours of returning home.

Bonus-malus rules

A no-claim ladder with 24 steps runs up to an 80% discount from step 20 and above; a claim-free year moves you up one step, while claims move you down according to the no-claim table. Certain causes (fire, theft, natural disasters, glass breakage, hit-and-run by an untraceable third party, vandalism, etc.) do not cause a step reduction, though they still affect claim-free years. Claim-free years and steps are recorded nationally via Roy-data and transferred when switching insurer; repaying a claim within 12 months restores the step held before the claim.

Breakdown assistance (Pechhulp) can only be added as an optional cover on top of Beperkt Casco or Volledig Casco, not on a WA-only policy.
