De Internationale Verzekeringen B.V.
De Internationale
De Internationale is a travel insurance for the Netherlands market with online purchase and 24/7 assistance.
Direct payment
The policy is supplemental: medical costs must first be submitted to and declared with the policyholder's Dutch health insurer (zorgverzekeraar); De Internationale then reimburses only the remaining costs not covered by the primary insurer, paid to the policyholder or, in case of death, to the legal heirs.
Geographic scope
Europe (Europa Standaard) plus the Baltic States, the European part of Russia, Turkey, Madeira, the Azores and the Canary Islands (Europa Plus), or worldwide (Wereld), depending on the tier chosen.
Not covered in Caribbean Netherlands (Bonaire, Sint Eustatius, Saba) or non-European Mediterranean countries (except Turkey) unless Wereld cover is chosen. Since the 05-2026 edition, cover is limited or excluded for destinations under an orange or red Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs travel advisory: a red advisory excludes all cover for the trip; an orange advisory excludes cover for losses linked to the reason for the advisory and excludes cancellation cover if you depart after the advisory was already orange. No repatriation cover is provided if the advisory changes to orange/red while you are already travelling.
Unique selling points
- 24/7 emergency assistance via SOS International's own alarm centre, reachable directly from anywhere in the world.
- Fully modular policy: build your own cover from six optional add-ons (medical costs, accidents, winter sports, motorist assistance, cash, cancellation) on top of the standard package.
- Accompanying pets (dogs, cats or horses) are covered for veterinary treatment needed abroad, up to €150 per year, even though this is a human travel policy.
- Liability for damage to your rented holiday accommodation is already included in the standard package, up to €550 on the Europa Plus and Wereld tiers.
- Choose from three geographical tiers — Europa Standaard, Europa Plus or Wereld — with trip lengths of up to 90 consecutive days on the wider tiers.
Coverage limits
Medical expenses
Optional
Optional module reimbursing emergency medical costs abroad, supplemental to the policyholder's Dutch health insurance. Costs incurred abroad are reimbursed at actual cost (kostprijs) with no stated maximum, for up to one year from the first day of treatment. Note: the benefits table separately lists a €1,100 cap labelled 'Medische kosten Nederland', while §9.2 of the same (04-2025/05-2026) wording excludes medical costs incurred in the Netherlands altogether — the source text does not fully reconcile these two provisions.
Emergency medical treatment
€1
Part of the optional Medical Costs module: doctors' fees, prescribed treatments, examinations, medicines and dressings for a spoedeisende and unforeseen medical necessity, reimbursed at cost abroad.
Hospitalization and surgery
€25,000
Hospital admission and operation costs are covered under the optional Medical Costs module, reimbursed at cost (kostprijs) abroad, no separate sub-limit stated beyond the general medical-costs figures.
Outpatient treatment
€25,000
Doctor consultations, prescribed medicines and transport to/from the place of treatment (within the country where treatment starts) are covered under the optional Medical Costs module, at cost abroad.
Emergency dental costs
€275
Under the optional Medical Costs module: dentists' fees, necessary X-rays and prescribed medicines for treatment of the natural dentition, capped at €275 per insured per trip.
Transport to place of medical treatment
Optional
Under the optional Medical Costs module: transport from where the insured is to where medical care is received and back, within the country where the transport begins, reimbursed at cost.
Medical evacuation / repatriation
Covered
Included in the standard 'Hulpverlening aan personen en buitengewone kosten' cover: in case of illness or accident, De Internationale arranges and pays (at cost, kostprijs) transport of the sick/injured insured back to the Netherlands with medical escort if required. Requires prior telephone approval from SOS International.
Repatriation of remains
Covered
Included in standard cover: costs of transporting the body to the Netherlands, or of a local burial/cremation, are paid at cost with SOS International approval; local burial/cremation costs (including family travel and accommodation) are capped at what repatriation to the Netherlands would have cost.
Search, rescue and salvage
Covered
Included in standard 'Buitengewone kosten' cover: costs charged by a competent authority to search for, rescue or recover the insured, reimbursed at cost.
COVID-19 treatment
No limit stated
Not separately addressed in any of the reviewed policy versions (2024, 04-2025, 05-2026); no COVID-19-specific provision, limit or exclusion is stated.
Pre-existing conditions
Excluded
Medical and extraordinary-costs cover explicitly excludes costs related to an illness, condition or disorder for which the insured was already under treatment before the trip, or where the trip was (partly) undertaken to receive treatment for a pre-existing condition, or where it was already clear before departure that treatment would be needed during the trip.
Winter sports cover
€5,500 – €7,500
Optional Wintersport module extends the standard cover items (assistance, baggage, holiday-accommodation damage) to winter sports (any sport on snow/ice). Winter-sports equipment (bagage) is covered up to €5,500 per policy per event on Europa Standaard, and €7,500 on Europa Plus/Wereld (per-insured sub-limit €2,750 / €3,750 / €3,750). Medical costs incurred while practising winter sports are only covered if both the Wintersport module and the Medical Costs module are taken out.
Adventure / high-risk sports cover
Conditional
No limit stated
As of the 05-2026 wording, eligibility for Buitengewone Kosten and Medical Costs cover (and any accident payout) for specific sports is determined by a separate 'Bijzondere sporten' (special sports) list referenced in, but not included among, the reviewed source documents; some sports are excluded and others require the Wintersport and/or Medical Costs modules. Cover therefore depends on that external list and cannot be fully verified from these sources alone.
Pregnancy complications
No limit stated
Not addressed as a medical-costs coverage item. Pregnancy and its unforeseen complications are mentioned only as valid grounds for trip cancellation or early return under the optional Annulering module.
Liability for damage to rented holiday accommodation
€275 – €550
This is not a general third-party liability cover; it is limited to damage the insured causes to a rented holiday home/accommodation and its furnishings. Included as standard, capped at €275 per trip (all insureds combined) on Europa Standaard and €550 on Europa Plus/Wereld. Only paid if the damage exceeds €50 (deductible/franchise of €50 applies). Boats, caravans and campers are not considered 'holiday accommodation' for this purpose.
Legal assistance
No limit stated
No legal-assistance (rechtsbijstand) module or benefit is mentioned anywhere in the reviewed policy versions.
24/7 emergency assistance
Covered
Standard included: a 24/7 emergency alarm centre operated by SOS International (+31 20 651 5956), which must be contacted for calamities, extraordinary costs, hospitalisation, repatriation, and prior approval requests.
Key conditions
Assistance call deadline
You must notify SOS International by phone or email within 24 hours of an accident, hospitalization, or death (or at the earliest possible opportunity if that is not feasible); prior telephone approval from SOS International is required before claiming extraordinary costs or assistance.
Unauthorized treatment
Extraordinary costs and assistance are reimbursed only if made with prior consent from SOS International, obtained by phone before requesting payment or help; costs made without that approval, or treatment by unrecognised doctors/hospitals, are not reimbursed.
Purchase while abroad
The reviewed policy documents do not specify whether the policy can be taken out or extended while already abroad. Cover generally starts when the insured and/or their baggage leave their home in the Netherlands for a trip, provided this is on or after the policy's start date.
Chronic conditions
Medical costs and assistance are not covered for an illness, condition or disorder for which the insured was already under treatment before departure, or if the trip was (partly) undertaken to obtain treatment for a pre-existing condition.
Pregnancy
Pregnancy itself is not a listed medical benefit, but an unexpected pregnancy discovered after booking, or medical pregnancy complications that could not be foreseen when booking, are valid grounds for trip cancellation or early return under the optional Annulering module.
Pre-existing condition exclusions
Costs related to an illness, condition or disorder for which the insured was already under treatment before departure, or for which it was already clear before departure that treatment would be needed during the trip, are excluded from Medical Costs and Buitengewone Kosten cover.
Coverage duration limit
Maximum uninterrupted trip duration is 60 days on Europa Standaard and 90 days on Europa Plus or Wereld. Medical-cost claims are payable for a maximum of one year from the first day of treatment. Since 05-2026, interrupting a trip and then resuming it counts as one continuous period for this purpose.

All persons on the policy must have Netherlands as their place of residence to be eligible for coverage.
SourceFirst year non-cancellable period
For continuous travel insurance, cannot cancel policy during first 12 months of coverage. After first year, daily cancellation possible.
SourceSupplemental insurance nature
Policy pays only the difference between claim amount and what primary insurance (e.g., Dutch health insurer, other travel policies) covers. Not a primary insurer.
SourceSOS International control and approval requirement
SOS International controls and approves emergency assistance, extraordinary costs, and repatriation decisions. Insureds must contact them first for emergencies.
SourcePolice report requirement for certain claims
Claims for theft, loss or damage to baggage, vandalism, robbery, extortion, collision or accident require immediate police report filed at location of incident.
SourceTrip interruption treated as continuous
New in the 05-2026 wording: if the insured interrupts the trip and subsequently continues towards the same destination, this is treated as one continuous trip period for the purposes of the maximum trip-duration rule.
