Direct payment

Costs are generally reimbursed afterwards based on the actual expenses incurred. In specific emergency situations (e.g. a hospital requiring upfront payment before treatment) the 24/7 alarm centre can advance costs on the policyholder's behalf, which must then be repaid to the insurer as soon as possible.

Geographic scope

Policyholder chooses cover for Europe or worldwide

Europe cover includes all European countries, the Azores, the Canary Islands, Madeira and countries bordering the Mediterranean Sea. Within the Netherlands, cover only applies while travelling to/from abroad or for a paid overnight stay away from home.

Unique selling points

  • A combined per-event ceiling of €5,000,000 for the Medical Costs and Personal Assistance modules together, well above typical continuous travel policy limits.
  • No notice period to cancel: policyholders can stop the policy at any time in writing without a termination period.
  • Recreational diving up to 40 metres is included as standard at no extra cost, without needing a special sports supplement.
  • Flexible premium payment monthly, quarterly or annually via direct debit with no additional charges.
  • Family cover extends to unmarried children aged 27 or younger who live away from home for full-time study, broader than many competitors' age limits.

COVID-19 treatment

No limit stated

No provided source document mentions COVID-19 specifically as a covered or excluded peril.

Source

Pre-existing conditions

Excluded

Medical costs are not covered if, before departure, it was already established that the policyholder would need medical treatment, was already ill or had an existing condition that led to foreseeable medical complaints, if the trip was (partly) undertaken for the treatment, if treatment was already ongoing abroad before departure, or if treatment could reasonably have waited until return to the Netherlands.

Winter sports cover

Optional

Only in Wintersport aanvulling

Personal assistance, medical costs and personal injury (Personenschade) arising from an accident or death during winter sports are only covered if the optional Wintersport supplement has been chosen, applying the same limits as the underlying modules (including the combined €5,000,000 medical/assistance ceiling). Winter sports outside marked pistes/runs is never covered; cross-country skiing and walking in the snow are always included without needing the supplement.

Adventure and dangerous sports cover

Conditional

Recreational diving is covered as standard, except diving for work, diving deeper than 40 metres, wreck diving, cave diving or freediving. Dangerous sports and speed contests such as motor sports, kitesurfing, ski jumping, mountaineering, parachuting or bungee jumping are explicitly excluded from all modules.

Pregnancy complications

No limit stated

The sources do not provide a specific medical-costs benefit for pregnancy complications; pregnancy complications are only referenced as a trigger event qualifying as 'ernstig ziek' for the (separate, optional) trip cancellation module, not as a medical expenses benefit.

24/7 alarm centre assistance

Covered

Klaverblad's alarm centre provides round-the-clock assistance for medical emergencies, accidents, missing persons, deaths and other calamities during the trip, reachable on +31 (0)79 - 3 204 704; this base assistance service underlies all selected modules.

Source

Key conditions

Assistance call deadline

For treatment or hospital admission, the policyholder must contact the alarm centre in advance; if advance contact is not possible, the alarm centre must be contacted within one week.

Unauthorized treatment

If the policyholder fails to meet obligations such as contacting the alarm centre or reporting damage promptly, Klaverblad may refuse to reimburse the claim and can reclaim amounts already paid or advanced.

Purchase while abroad

The policy terms do not contain a specific provision addressing taking out this insurance while already abroad.

Chronic conditions

Medical costs are excluded if they result from a known, serious ailment or chronic illness that a treating doctor would have confirmed made the trip medically inadvisable, had this been asked before booking.

Pregnancy

Pregnancy is not separately addressed as a medical-costs benefit; a pregnancy complication or a pregnancy that makes travel medically inadvisable is treated as 'ernstig ziek' and can trigger the separate, optional trip cancellation module.

Pre-existing condition exclusions

Medical costs are not covered if, before departure, the policyholder already knew or could have foreseen the need for treatment, was already ill, was already undergoing treatment abroad, travelled (partly) for the treatment, or could reasonably have postponed treatment until returning to the Netherlands.

Coverage duration limit

Cover applies to trips of a maximum of three consecutive months; beyond this period there is no cover unless the trip is extended by a covered event that is reported to Klaverblad immediately.
