National Academic
National Academic is a travel insurance for the Netherlands market with online purchase and 24/7 assistance.
Direct payment
The insurer generally reimburses costs after the insured submits proof (invoices, receipts, medical statements); for extra costs and hulp abroad, prior approval from National Academic's 24/7 alarm centre is required where reasonably possible, and only costs approved (or that would reasonably have been approved) by the alarm centre are paid.
Geographic scope
Europe (including North Africa/Mediterranean countries) or, if selected, worldwide
Standard coverage area is Europe, including Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Cyprus, the Azores, Canary Islands and Madeira, plus outside Europe: Algeria, Egypt, Israel, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco, Syria, Tunisia and Turkey. Aruba, Bonaire, Curaçao, Sint Eustatius, Sint Maarten and Saba are not included in the Europe coverage area. A worldwide coverage option is also available. In all cases, coverage does not apply to countries/regions with a negative travel advisory (orange/red) from the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

Key conditions
Assistance call deadline
For extra costs and assistance during the trip, the insured must call National Academic's 24/7 alarm centre and follow its instructions, reporting the need for help or extra costs before they are incurred whenever reasonably possible. For medical care, the insured must first contact their Dutch health insurer's alarm centre, and only call National Academic's alarm centre if the health insurer does not provide cover.
Unauthorized treatment
Only costs approved in advance by the alarm centre are covered. If prior approval was not reasonably possible, the insured must be able to prove this; in that case, only the reasonable costs the alarm centre would have authorized in the same situation are reimbursed.
Purchase while abroad
None of the reviewed documents address purchasing or activating this policy while already abroad.
Chronic conditions
Costs are not covered if the insured knew, or could reasonably have known, before the trip that medical costs would be needed because of an existing illness, condition or disorder.
Pregnancy
None of the reviewed documents specifically address pregnancy as a coverage item or exclusion.
Pre-existing condition exclusions
Medical and related extra costs are excluded if the insured knew or could reasonably have known/foreseen before the trip that help or medical costs would be needed, or if the trip was undertaken to receive treatment.
Coverage duration limit
Coverage, including for medical costs, ends after a maximum of 180 consecutive days of travel and/or stay abroad, at 23:59 on the last day; a trip that unexpectedly runs longer due to a sudden, unforeseen delay beyond the insured's control remains covered until the insured is back home.
