Direct payment

This is a reimbursement model, not cashless/direct billing. Medical costs must first be claimed from the insured's Dutch health insurer; only the part not reimbursed by that health insurer can subsequently be submitted to Promovendum, and only if the alarm centre gave prior approval for the costs.

Geographic scope

Europe (including Georgia, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Cyprus, the Azores, Canary Islands, Madeira and select North-African/Middle-Eastern countries) or, if selected, worldwide

The Caribbean parts of the Kingdom (Aruba, Bonaire, Curaçao, Sint Eustatius, Sint Maarten, Saba) are excluded from the Europe coverage area. The policy never covers travel in or through countries/regions for which the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs has issued a negative travel advisory (orange or red), except for a temporary 7-day extension if the advisory changes during the trip.

Unique selling points

  • Choose between Europe or Worldwide coverage and build the continuous travel policy yourself with optional modules (medical costs, breakdown assistance, winter sports, accidents).
  • One policy covers all holidays and weekend trips throughout the year, so there is no need to insure each trip separately.
  • A 24/7 alarm centre is available for medical guidance, transport arrangements and advice when help is needed abroad.
  • Children can remain co-insured up to age 24, including while living away for full-time study or with an ex-partner, under the stated conditions.

Coverage limits

Medical expenses abroad (excess of Dutch health insurance)

Optional

Optional module covering medically necessary treatment costs incurred abroad, but only the portion not reimbursed by the insured's Dutch health insurer under the basic and/or supplementary (dental) policy. No fixed sum insured is stated; the mandatory or voluntary excess of the health insurance itself is never covered.

Optional

Covers treatment (or a treatment prescribed) by a locally recognized doctor or dentist that cannot be postponed until the insured is back home, for the part not paid by the Dutch health insurer.

Source

Hospitalization and surgery abroad

Optional

Covers hospital admission and surgery in a hospital recognized by the authorities of that country, only for the part not reimbursed by the Dutch health insurer.

Source

Outpatient examinations and medication

Optional

Covers examinations, medicines and dressing materials prescribed by the treating doctor or dentist, for the part not reimbursed by the Dutch health insurer.

Source

Emergency dental treatment abroad

€350

Dental costs abroad are reimbursed up to a maximum of €350 per insured per trip, only during the trip (no follow-up treatment in the Netherlands) and only the part not paid by the Dutch health/dental insurer.

Source

Local transport to/from hospital

Optional

Covers transport to and, if medically necessary, between hospitals when the insured is ill or has had an accident, during the trip abroad.

Source

Medical repatriation to the Netherlands

Covered

Included under the mandatory Extra Costs module: if hospitalized abroad, the return journey to the Netherlands on medical indication (including necessary medical escort), organized by the alarm centre, is reimbursed at cost price; no fixed maximum is stated.

Source

Repatriation of remains / local burial or cremation

€7,500

Included under the mandatory Extra Costs module. If an insured dies abroad, next of kin may choose between transport of the deceased to the Netherlands (max €7,500, including the necessary inner coffin) or burial/cremation in the country of death (max €7,500, including travel/stay for up to two persons at max €75 per person per day for up to 3 days); an additional €75 per person per day (max 7 days) is paid for other travelling insureds who must stay longer. Total payout never exceeds the cost of repatriation to the Netherlands. If death occurs in the Netherlands during a domestic trip, transport to a location in the Netherlands is covered up to €1,000.

Source

Search, rescue and recovery costs

€10,000

Included under the mandatory Extra Costs module: costs for search, rescue and recovery of the insured in case of disappearance or accident, up to €10,000 per insured per trip, only by a competent body engaged via the insurer's alarm centre.

Source

Pandemic-related costs (incl. COVID-19)

Excluded

The general terms exclude all damage and costs related to or resulting from the (possible) presence of, or measures against, a pandemic (as declared by the WHO), across all modules including Medical Costs.

Source

Pre-existing / foreseeable medical conditions

Excluded

Medical costs are not covered if the insured knew, or could reasonably have known, before the trip that medical costs would need to be made during the trip, for example an existing illness, condition or disorder, or travelling specifically to receive treatment.

Source

Winter sports extension

Optional

A winter sports trip (skiing, cross-country skiing, snowboarding etc.) is only covered under the Medical Costs module (and other modules) if the winter sports extension has been additionally selected on the policy schedule.

Source

Risk-increasing sports and activities

Excluded

Damage/costs connected to risk-increasing sports or activities (e.g. bungee jumping, off-piste skiing, parachuting, diving, mountaineering, martial arts, motor racing) are excluded across the policy, including the Medical Costs module.

Pregnancy complications

Not specifically addressed as a separate coverage item in the sources reviewed.

Liability for damage to accommodation

€350

Included under the mandatory Extra Costs module: covers liability for damage the insured causes to the accommodation (hotel, bungalow, rented caravan or similar, including its inventory) not owned by the insured, up to €350 per trip for all insureds combined, only if the damage is at least €100. This is not a general personal liability cover.

24/7 alarm centre assistance

Covered

A 24/7 alarm centre (phone 0031 78 648 13 23) is included as part of the Extra Costs module, providing transport arrangement, medical guidance on the return journey and advice; medical costs are only covered if made with the centre's prior approval.

Source

Key conditions

Assistance call deadline

In case of medical care, the insured must first call the alarm centre of their Dutch health insurer; if that insurer offers no cover, the insured must call Promovendum's alarm centre (0031 78 648 13 23) and follow instructions. Only medical costs made with the alarm centre's prior approval are covered.

Unauthorized treatment

Costs incurred without prior approval from the alarm centre are not reimbursed, unless the insured can prove that requesting prior approval was demonstrably not possible, in which case reasonable costs comparable to what the alarm centre would have arranged are paid.

Purchase while abroad

Not specifically addressed for this module. Generally, a policy can only be taken out for damage that is not yet known and could not reasonably be expected at the time the contract is concluded, which limits insuring a need that has already arisen while abroad.

Chronic conditions

Medical costs are not covered if the insured already had a known illness, condition or disorder before the trip and could have foreseen needing treatment for it.

Pregnancy

Not specifically addressed in the Medical Costs module terms; general exclusions on known/foreseeable medical situations before the trip apply.

Pre-existing condition exclusions

Not covered if the insured knew or could reasonably have known before the trip that medical costs would be needed, e.g. an existing illness or condition, or travelling specifically for treatment.

Coverage duration limit

Cover applies to trips of at most 180 consecutive days; cover for that trip ends on the last day of that period at 23:59.
