Direct payment

Before incurring medical costs, the insured must contact the ANWB Alarmcentrale; hulpverlening (assistance) costs are paid directly by Unigarant, while most other costs (e.g. medical expenses) are reimbursed afterwards against proof of costs incurred.

Geographic scope

Europe or Worldwide, selectable by the policyholder

Europe includes the Netherlands (with at least one overnight stay elsewhere), other European countries, Turkey (incl. Asian part), Russia up to the Urals and the Caucasus, Iceland, Madeira, Azores, Canary Islands, and non-European Mediterranean countries/parts such as Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya, Egypt, Israel, Lebanon, Syria, Georgia, Armenia and Azerbaijan; the World option extends cover to the rest of the world. Trips outside the chosen area are still covered for up to 48 hours if made from within the covered area.

Unique selling points

  • The Compleet variant of the Doorlopende Reisverzekering was again rated best in the Consumentenbond's 2025 test.
  • Customers rate Unigarant 8+ for the handling of complaints and claims.
  • The ANWB Alarmcentrale provides worldwide 24/7 assistance, including arranging medical escort during the return journey.
  • Children under 5 years old are insured free of charge.
  • The policy is fully modular, letting customers combine only the covers they need, from Compact to Compleet.

Key conditions

Assistance call deadline

The insured must contact the ANWB Alarmcentrale before incurring medical costs, and unforeseen expenses must also be made in consultation with the Alarmcentrale to be reimbursed.

Unauthorized treatment

No fixed percentage penalty is stated for skipping the Alarmcentrale; however, medical costs and onvoorziene uitgaven are only reimbursed if necessary, unforeseen and (for onvoorziene uitgaven) made in consultation with the ANWB Alarmcentrale, so unauthorized treatment risks non-reimbursement.

Purchase while abroad

The insurance cannot start earlier than the moment it was concluded, so it cannot be purchased retroactively to cover a trip already underway.

Chronic conditions

The Medische kosten terms do not include a specific provision addressing chronic diseases.

Pregnancy

Pregnancy-related provisions are only addressed under the optional Annulering (cancellation) cover, not under the Medische kosten cover.

Pre-existing condition exclusions

The Medische kosten terms do not contain a specific exclusion or provision for pre-existing medical conditions.

Coverage duration limit

The standard maximum duration per trip abroad is 60 consecutive days; this can be extended to a maximum of 180 consecutive days with the optional 'Verlengen maximale reisduur' add-on.
