Direct payment

Medical bills must first be submitted to the insured's own Dutch health insurer (zorgverzekeraar); VvAA only reimburses the portion not covered by that insurer, based on the health insurer's settlement letter. Assistance arranged via Artsen Alarm Service (AAS) is generally provided in kind (in natura); other benefits are paid out in kind or in euros. In emergencies AAS can advance up to €1.000, which must be repaid to VvAA immediately upon return to the Netherlands.

Geographic scope

Europe or Worldwide, selectable by the policyholder at inception

Cover applies in the specified area on the policy: 'Europe' comprises the listed European countries plus several non-European Mediterranean countries, the Azores, Madeira and the Canary Islands, and includes sea voyages between these areas; or 'Worldwide'. The Caribbean islands Bonaire, Sint Eustatius and Saba are only covered if worldwide cover was selected. Cancellation cover (Rubriek G) always applies worldwide regardless of the chosen area.

Unique selling points

  • Choose your own baggage sum insured, tailored to your situation, rather than a fixed one-size-fits-all limit.
  • As a healthcare professional, your medical instruments, laptop, mobile phone and smartwatch are specifically co-insured.
  • Report claims quickly online, by phone, or via WhatsApp/chatbot, with fast payout once the claim file is complete.
  • The Top tier has no deductible on baggage, medical costs and rented-accommodation liability claims.
  • The policy can be arranged up to one day before departure and still provide cover for the trip.

Coverage limits

Medical expenses abroad

unlimited

Reimburses medically necessary treatment costs abroad at cost price (kostprijs), but only supplementary to the insured's own Dutch health insurance (zorgverzekering) — the insured must already have Dutch health cover and can only claim the part not reimbursed by it. A deductible of €50 per event applies (none under the Top tier). Costs from winter sports or special sports are excluded unless Rubriek D is also insured. Pre-existing/chronic conditions and treatments planned before departure are excluded.

Source

Emergency medical treatment

unlimited

Covers doctor's fees, prescribed medicines/dressings, ambulance/taxi/own-vehicle transport to hospital or doctor (€0,20/km for own vehicle), a prosthesis fitted after an accident, and X-rays, reimbursed at cost price, subject to the same zorgverzekering-first condition as medical_expenses.

Source

Hospitalization abroad

unlimited

Nursing and treatment costs, including surgery, during hospital admission abroad are reimbursed at cost price, supplementary to the Dutch health insurer. Follow-up treatment in the Netherlands after a foreign accident is separately capped at €1.000 (Basis), €2.000 (Comfort) or €3.000 (Top), provided at least one treatment abroad occurred and costs are incurred within 365 days.

Source

Outpatient treatment

unlimited

Doctor consultations, examinations and prescribed medicines/dressings outside hospital admission are reimbursed at cost price, subject to the same zorgverzekering-first eligibility as other Rubriek C medical costs.

Source

Emergency dental treatment abroad

€350 – €1,250

Necessary dental treatment following an accident or acute inflammation, reimbursed up to €350 (Basis), €700 (Comfort) or €1.250 (Top) per insured per trip; not covered if treatment could safely wait until return home.

Source

Medical transport to hospital/doctor

unlimited

Transport by ambulance, taxi or own vehicle to/from a hospital or treating doctor is reimbursed at cost price (own-vehicle use at €0,20/km) when public transport is not medically advisable, part of the Rubriek C medical-cost bucket.

Source

Medical repatriation/evacuation

unlimited

Artsen Alarm Service (AAS) organizes and pays for medical repatriation to the Netherlands at cost price when medically necessary, provided the stay abroad does not exceed 6 consecutive months, treatment was not the purpose of the stay, and the need was unforeseeable at departure.

Source

Repatriation of remains / local burial

unlimited

At cost price, AAS arranges local formalities and repatriation of a deceased insured to the Netherlands. If the deceased is not repatriated, AAS instead reimburses local burial/cremation costs plus family travel costs, capped at €6.000 (equal to what repatriation would have cost).

Source

Search, rescue, salvage and transport

€25,000

If the insured is reported missing, costs of search, rescue, salvage and transport carried out by or under the local competent authorities are reimbursed up to a maximum of €25.000 per insurance year, regardless of the number of insureds involved, same limit across all tiers.

COVID-19 treatment

No limit stated

Not addressed as a distinct benefit in the reviewed policy conditions.

Source

Pre-existing conditions

Excluded

Excludes medical/dental costs related to an illness, disorder or condition that already existed or caused complaints on or before the start of the trip, and costs from illnesses under treatment abroad before the trip began.

Source

Winter sports cover (Rubriek D)

unlimited

Optional add-on (extra premium) unlocking baggage/assistance/medical cover (Rubriek A/B/C) while practising winter sports abroad, plus reimbursement at cost price of unused ski passes, lessons and rented ski equipment if cut short by accident/illness. Recreational cross-country skiing, skating, sledging and diving are covered by default without this rider; certain high-risk winter sports are excluded even with the rider.

Source

Special/adventure sports cover (Rubriek D)

unlimited

Same optional Rubriek D rider extends baggage/assistance/medical cover to many 'special sports' (e.g. certain diving, climbing, watersports) listed in the policy annex; a defined list of the highest-risk activities (e.g. bobsleigh, base jump, off-piste skiing without a guide) remain excluded from medical cover even with this rider, retaining only baggage and assistance cover.

Source

Pregnancy complications

No limit stated

Rubriek C (medical costs) does not separately address pregnancy; unexpected pregnancy complications are mentioned only as a ground for trip cancellation (Rubriek G), a different subtype not covered by this record.

Source

Liability for damage to rented accommodation/inventory

€500 – €1,500

Covers the insured's liability for damage caused to rented holiday accommodation and/or its inventory, up to €500 (Basis), €1.000 (Comfort) or €1.500 (Top) per event, minus a €50 deductible (none under Top). This is limited to rented-accommodation liability and is not a general third-party/personal liability cover.

Source

Legal assistance

No limit stated

Not covered as part of the reviewed Doorlopende reisverzekering conditions (a separate VvAA legal-expenses product is referenced on the service site but is out of scope here).

Source

24/7 emergency assistance line (AAS)

Covered

Artsen Alarm Service (AAS) is reachable 24 hours a day, both from abroad and from the Netherlands, on +31 30 241 29 08 for personal assistance (hospitalization, accident, illness, early return) and advice; prior contact with AAS is required for costs to be reimbursed.

Source

Key conditions

Assistance call deadline

For help abroad, AAS must be contacted first and its prior approval obtained for costs to be reimbursed. Separately, an event must be reported: death within 24 hours; hospitalization ideally in advance but at the latest within 1 week of admission; all other cases within 30 days of returning to the Netherlands.

Unauthorized treatment

AAS decides on the necessity and form of assistance; costs and help arranged without prior consultation with and approval from AAS are for the insured's own account and not reimbursed.

Purchase while abroad

Not addressed in the reviewed conditions; cover starts on the inception date stated on the policy (from 00:00), implying the policy is intended to be arranged before departure rather than while already travelling.

Chronic conditions

Medical and dental costs related to an illness, condition or defect that already existed or caused complaints on or before the trip's start date are excluded, as are treatments (partly) intended as the purpose of the trip.

Pregnancy

The medical-costs rubric (Rubriek C) does not separately mention pregnancy; unexpected pregnancy complications are addressed only as a trip-cancellation ground (Rubriek G), a different, non-medical benefit.

Pre-existing condition exclusions

Excluded: costs from illnesses/conditions existing or causing complaints before the trip, treatments already ongoing abroad before departure, and hospital treatments that could safely be postponed until after the trip.

Coverage duration limit

Cover applies during an uninterrupted period of maximum 2 months for trips within the Netherlands and maximum 6 months for trips abroad (this limit does not apply to Rubriek G Cancellation); medical repatriation also requires the stay abroad not to exceed 6 consecutive months.
