Direct payment

Balcia operates a 24/7 assistance centre that organises treatment and assistance services and pays costs directly to service providers. If the provider demands upfront payment by the insured, documented costs are reimbursed after the fact.

Geographic scope

Poland and abroad

Policyholder may choose: Poland only, Europe (excluding Belarus, Moldova, Ukraine, European part of Russia unless otherwise agreed), or Worldwide. Coverage applies during temporary stay abroad within the insurance period.

Unique selling points

  • Comprehensive 24/7 assistance centre pays service providers directly, minimising out-of-pocket expenses for the insured during a medical emergency abroad.
  • Search and rescue operations in mountains, on land and at sea are included as standard — a benefit many competitors offer only as a paid add-on.
  • Automatic insurance period extension of up to 3 days at no extra cost when return is delayed by documented circumstances beyond the insured's control (e.g. transport breakdown, adverse weather, strikes).
  • Optional extreme sports extension covers a wide range of high-risk activities and automatically includes amateur skiing and snowboarding within the same extension.
  • Short OWU with a limited exclusion list and clear, plain-language policy wording designed for ease of understanding.

COVID-19 treatment

Not offered

COVID-19 is not explicitly mentioned in the OWU PL-4TR. General medical expenses coverage covers unexpected illnesses not manifested before the trip requiring immediate medical attention; however, trip cancellation and trip interruption are excluded in cases of pandemic or epidemic. Coverage status for COVID-19 treatment costs under the general medical expenses section cannot be confirmed from the verified sources.

Pre-existing / chronic conditions

Conditional

Chronic disease exacerbation is covered only if it did not manifest before the start of the trip and requires immediate medical attention. The policy definition of 'Illness' (Choroba) explicitly includes exacerbation of a chronic disease that did not manifest before the trip. Pre-existing conditions that were already manifested before departure are not covered; planned treatment abroad is also excluded.

24/7 assistance centre

Covered

A 24/7 assistance centre is included in the coverage. It organises treatment, arranges all assistance services listed in the policy and pays costs directly to service providers. Contact: (+48) 222 742 222. If direct contact before receiving services was impossible for reasons beyond the insured's control, documented costs are reimbursed within 7 days of those reasons ceasing.

Source

Key conditions

Assistance call deadline

In the event of a covered event, the insured must contact Balcia immediately before taking any other independent action. If contact before receiving services was impossible for reasons beyond the insured's control, all required documents must be sent immediately after those reasons cease, no later than 7 days from that date.

Unauthorized treatment

If the insured did not contact Balcia before treatment due to reasons beyond their control, documented costs are reimbursed in full. However, if using an EU/EFTA public health facility covered by EHIC, only costs not reimbursed under EHIC are compensated; Balcia may also arrange transport to a public facility at its own cost. Balcia is entitled to reduce the compensation if timely notification was not given, where this is causally linked to the loss.

Purchase while abroad

The policy may be purchased before or during the trip. Insurance coverage begins from the date specified in the policy as the start of the insurance period, no earlier than the day following premium payment (or the day specified for deferred payment). The cancellation coverage (trip cancellation) requires the policy to be concluded at least 3 days before the planned departure date for illness-related cancellations.

Chronic conditions

Chronic disease is covered only if its exacerbation did not manifest before the start of the trip and requires immediate medical attention. If the exacerbation manifested before departure, it is not covered. The definition of 'Illness' (Choroba) in the OWU explicitly includes exacerbation of a chronic condition not manifested before the trip.

Pregnancy

Costs related to pregnancy from week 28 or childbirth are excluded, except where necessary emergency medical assistance is required in urgent cases related to an accident. Pregnancy before week 28 may qualify for medical expense coverage if an unexpected illness or complication arises requiring immediate attention.

Pre-existing condition exclusions

Pre-existing conditions that manifested before the trip are not covered. Only unexpected illness or exacerbation of a chronic condition that did not manifest before the start of the trip and requires immediate medical attention is covered. Planned treatment abroad is explicitly excluded.

Coverage duration limit

The insurance period is specified in the policy. If the insured's return is delayed for reasons beyond their control (documented breakdown or accident of transport, force majeure events, transport delay/cancellation, adverse weather, carrier or airport staff strike), the insurance period is automatically extended by up to 3 days. Maximum trip duration under a single policy is up to 12 months.
