Direct payment

Cashless medical assistance is organised and paid directly by the Alarm Centre (Centrum Alarmowe) acting on behalf of ERGO Hestia. The Alarm Centre selects the hospital, arranges transport and handles payment conditions with the medical facility. If the Alarm Centre could not organise a service for reasons beyond its control, ERGO Hestia reimburses documented costs incurred by the insured, subject to the applicable limits.

Geographic scope

Worldwide excluding USA, Canada, China and Japan

Worldwide except USA, Canada, Japan and China. Countries with Polish Ministry of Foreign Affairs 'Do not travel' or 'Leave immediately' warnings are excluded. Medical assistance organisation is not possible in Ukraine, Israel, Lebanon, Jordan and Syria.

Key conditions

Assistance call deadline

The insured must notify ERGO Hestia of the event immediately after it occurs or after learning about it (§24 OWU). Before undertaking treatment with costs exceeding 2,000 PLN (gross), the insured must inform ERGO Hestia. All assistance services must be organised through the Alarm Centre; if the insured arranges services independently without Alarm Centre involvement, reimbursement is limited to documented economically justified costs within applicable limits.

Unauthorized treatment

If the insured undertakes treatment independently without notifying the Alarm Centre and without the Alarm Centre's involvement, ERGO Hestia will reimburse only the documented costs already incurred, subject to applicable limits. If the insured refuses transport recommended by the Alarm Centre and the treating physician for continuation of treatment in Poland or country of residence, ERGO Hestia reimburses only costs of services and benefits already provided (§6(2) OWU).

Purchase while abroad

The policy is designed to be purchased before the trip. Coverage starts from the date and time specified in the insurance contract, but not earlier than the day following premium payment (§3(1) OWU). There is no explicit provision for purchasing the policy while already abroad; the standard commencement rule applies.

Chronic conditions

Chronic diseases are defined as conditions treated continuously or periodically in the 12 months before policy inception, during which periods of remission or exacerbation may occur. Chronic disease coverage is excluded from the base policy; it requires a paid extension. Without the extension, ERGO Hestia is not liable for medical costs arising from chronic conditions (§17(4)(4) OWU).

Pregnancy

Childbirth is excluded unless it occurs before the 32nd week of pregnancy. Abortion/termination is covered only if performed to save the insured's life or health and if the procedure is permitted by the law of the country where it is performed. Travel undertaken for the purpose of treatment or continuation of treatment begun before the trip is excluded entirely.

Pre-existing condition exclusions

Medical events caused by pre-existing conditions are not covered under the base policy unless the 'Choroba przewlekła' paid extension is purchased. If, for health reasons, a physician determined before departure that there were medical contraindications to foreign travel, or if the insured was informed before departure that surgery or inpatient treatment was necessary, ERGO Hestia bears no liability (§7(2) OWU).

Coverage duration limit

The policy is issued for a period of 12 months or shorter. The insurance coverage ends upon expiry of the contracted period or upon exhaustion of the sum insured or guarantee sum. Coverage is automatically extended by 48 hours without additional premium if the insured's return is delayed due to a vehicle breakdown, public transport cancellation/delay due to weather, or a fortuitous event beyond the insured's control.
