Direct payment

The insurer substitutes the insured in settling claims with third parties (subject to third parties' direct right of action) and can pay repair shops directly for repairs; any applicable deductible is still deducted from the indemnity even when payment is made directly to the repairer or another entity.

Geographic scope

Portugal (mainland, Madeira and the Azores)

Compulsory RC coverage applies in EU/EEA member states, Switzerland, Croatia, the Faroe Islands, the Channel Islands, Gibraltar, the Isle of Man, San Marino, the Vatican, Andorra and other Green Card Agreement countries. Optional (facultative) covers are limited to mainland Portugal, Madeira and the Azores unless otherwise agreed. VIP Travel Assistance to persons is worldwide; its vehicle guarantees are limited to Portugal, Europe and Mediterranean-bordering countries, with a maximum stay abroad of 60 days per trip.

Unique selling points

  • First insurer in Portugal to offer Android Automotive in-car app integration for claims tracking and roadside-assistance requests.
  • Optional Facultative Civil Liability extension raises third-party liability cover up to €50,000,000, well above the statutory minimums.
  • Automatic €70 cash compensation if roadside assistance takes longer than 60 minutes to arrive.
  • No deductible applies on Theft/Robbery, Natural Phenomena and Isolated Glass Breakage covers.
  • Replacement vehicle included as standard in every plan, for up to 5 days after a breakdown and 5 days after an accident.

Legal Protection (Proteção Jurídica VIP)

€10,000

A facultative Condição Especial (09) that is nonetheless included in all marketed plans, covering criminal defence, claims for bodily injury or material damage against third parties, claims under other policies, bail/indemnity advances and insolvency protection. Lawyer/expert fees are capped at €1,300, with a €5,000 per-claim limit for the main coverages (criminal defence, injury claims, material damage claims, claims under other insurance), and Annex III sets an aggregate annual cap of €10,000 across those four coverages; other sub-covers (bail advances, indemnity advances, insolvency, defective repair claims) have separate limits between €1,250 and €7,500.

Green Card (International Motor Insurance Certificate)

Covered

The International Insurance Certificate (Green Card) is issued on request within 5 business days at no extra charge, for contracts where the insurer has opted for automatic issuance of provisional certificates only (instalment payments shorter than a quarter).

Roadside Assistance (Assistência em Viagem VIP)

€2,000

A facultative Condição Especial (08) included in all marketed plans, covering towing/breakdown assistance, vehicle repatriation and worldwide personal travel assistance (maximum 60-day stay abroad per trip). Towing cost limits vary by vehicle category: €350 for light passenger/commercial vehicles up to 3,500kg, up to €500 for larger light commercial vehicles/motorhomes, and up to €2,000 for heavy goods vehicles over 20,000kg. A €70 compensation is paid to the insured if assistance does not arrive within 60 minutes of the request (mainland Portugal, light vehicles).

Driver Personal Accident

Covered

No limit stated

A facultative Condição Especial (07 - Condutor e Ocupantes de Viatura) included in all marketed plans, covering death, permanent disability, treatment and funeral expenses of the driver in a road accident. This cover exists because compulsory RC explicitly excludes bodily injury to the at-fault driver. The insured capital per person is set in each policy's Particular Conditions rather than a fixed generic amount; for permanent disability of 50% or more, the insurer pays double the applicable percentage under Annex I's disability scale, and the total capital is shared per capita up to the vehicle's registered seating capacity.

Passenger/Occupant Personal Accident

Covered

No limit stated

A facultative Condição Especial (07 - Condutor e Ocupantes de Viatura) included in all marketed plans, covering death, permanent disability, treatment and funeral expenses of any occupant of the insured vehicle (excluding hitch-hikers) in a road accident. The insured capital per person is set in each policy's Particular Conditions rather than a fixed generic amount; benefits are attributed per capita up to the vehicle's registered seating capacity, and are proportionally reduced if occupancy exceeds that capacity at the time of the accident.

Key conditions

Territorial scope

Compulsory RC coverage applies in EU/EEA member states, Switzerland, Croatia, the Faroe Islands, the Channel Islands, Gibraltar, the Isle of Man, San Marino, the Vatican, Andorra and other Green Card Agreement countries. Optional covers are limited to mainland Portugal, Madeira and the Azores unless otherwise agreed. VIP Travel Assistance to persons is worldwide, while its vehicle guarantees are limited to Portugal, Europe and Mediterranean-bordering countries, with a maximum 60-day stay abroad per trip.

Green card rules

Compulsory RC coverage extends to Green Card Agreement countries. An International Motor Insurance Certificate (Green Card) can be requested and is issued within 5 business days at no additional cost, for contracts where the insurer has opted for automatic issuance of provisional certificates only.

Driver restrictions

Coverage is restricted or excluded when the vehicle is driven by a person not legally licensed to drive, when the driver is under the influence of alcohol, narcotics or other toxic substances, or when the driver abandons accident victims at the scene.

Claim notification deadline

The policyholder or insured must notify the insurer in writing of any claim within a maximum of 8 days from the date of occurrence or from the date they became aware of it, providing information and evidence needed to determine liability.

Bonus-malus rules

Premiums vary independently for four coverages (Civil Liability, Collision/Impact/Rollover, Theft/Robbery, Fire/Lightning/Explosion) on a 23-level Bonus/Malus scale from 200% (level 1) down to 45% (level 23) of the base premium. A claim-free year moves the policy up the scale; claims move it down; progression beyond level 20 has been frozen since 1 January 2015. If the at-fault driver is under 25 or has held a licence for less than 2 years, each claim counts as two claims for scale purposes and doubles the applicable deductible under Collision/Impact/Rollover. Claims settled under the IDS convention where the other party is exclusively at fault do not affect the Bonus/Malus class.
