Territorial scope | The mandatory liability coverage applies throughout all territories of countries whose national insurance bureaux have adhered to the Agreement between national insurance bureaux, including all EU member states, EEA countries (Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway), Switzerland, Croatia, Faroe Islands, Channel Islands, Gibraltar, Isle of Man, San Marino, Vatican and Andorra, as well as on direct routes linking two EEA territories where no national insurance bureau exists. Extension to other territories is possible via a valid Green Card (international certificate of insurance). Optional coverages share the same territorial scope as the mandatory coverage as indicated on the Green Card, unless otherwise specified in the Special Conditions or Particular Conditions. | Mandatory civil liability coverage applies throughout all countries of the European Union and all countries indicated on the Green Card (International Insurance Certificate). Travel assistance is available in Portugal and across the rest of Europe. Other optional coverages apply as stated in the specific policy conditions. | The mandatory civil liability coverage is valid across EU member states, EEA countries (Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway), Switzerland, Croatia, Faroe Islands, Channel Islands, Gibraltar, Isle of Man, San Marino, Vatican City, Andorra, and other adherent countries. Extension to additional territories is possible via a valid Green Card. Optional own-damage and other voluntary coverages are generally limited to mainland Portugal and the Autonomous Regions of Madeira and the Azores, unless otherwise specified in the Special or Particular Conditions. |
Green card rules | The Green Card (certificado internacional de seguro / carta verde) is issued as proof of valid insurance. For vehicles habitually parked in Portugal, valid proof documents include the international insurance certificate (Green Card), provisional certificate, payment receipt or civil liability certificate. If the premium is paid in instalments of less than four months and the insurer opts for automatic issuance of provisional certificates only, the policyholder has the right to request the Green Card, which will be issued within five business days at no additional charge. For travel outside Portugal to countries requiring a Green Card, it must be requested at subscription. Extension to countries outside the standard Agreement territories requires a valid Green Card for those specific countries. | The Green Card (International Insurance Certificate) evidences MTPL coverage validity in member countries. It can be issued digitally via the myAllianz app. Optional coverages (e.g. own damage, glass breakage) apply only in countries specified in the policy conditions and Green Card. | The Green Card (international insurance certificate) evidences insurance coverage abroad. It is issued by Zurich and must be presented to prove insurance in countries outside Portugal. For vehicles habitually parked in Portugal, valid proof of insurance includes the Green Card, provisional certificate, payment receipt, or the civil liability certificate. For vehicles habitually parked outside the EEA, additionally the frontier insurance certificate is required. The insured must notify Zurich in writing within 24 hours of vehicle sale and return the Green Card. |
Driver restrictions | The premium is subject to age and driving licence tenure surcharges for young drivers. Drivers aged 18-20 with a licence of up to 2 years face a 100% surcharge; 18-20 with more than 2 years: 60%. Drivers aged 20-25 with licence up to 2 years: 80%; 20-25 with 2-4 years: 60%; 20-25 with 4+ years: 40%. Drivers aged 25 and over with up to 2 years of licence: 40%. A single-driver clause (Condutor Único) may be activated, restricting own-damage collision coverage to the declared sole driver. A young driver clause (Condutor Jovem) provides for reimbursement of surcharges paid after 2 claim-free years. Mandatory liability coverage extends to all legitimate holders and drivers of the insured vehicle. | The vehicle must be driven by a person legally authorised to drive. Coverage is excluded for accidents caused when the vehicle is driven by a person without a valid licence, or under the influence of alcohol above the legal limit, narcotics or other toxic substances, or during illegal racing. Allianz Portugal may subsequently seek reimbursement from the driver for indemnities paid to third parties in excluded circumstances. | Coverage applies to the policyholder, vehicle owner, usufructuary, acquirer with reservation of title or financial lessee, and all legitimate holders and drivers. Exclusions apply when the vehicle is driven by an unlicensed person, or by a person under the influence of alcohol, narcotics or drugs, or who abandons the scene. The Autoproteção (Condição Especial 005) coverage requires the driver to hold a valid driving licence for more than 5 years. Accompanied driving by a tutor is available as an optional extension (Condição Especial 047). |
Claim notification deadline | In case of a claim covered by the contract, the policyholder or insured must notify the insurer in writing as soon as possible, and no later than eight days from the day of the occurrence or from the day they become aware of it, providing all relevant evidence and documentation for the correct determination of liability. The notification must be made on the insurer's standard form (available on the insurer's website) or by any other written or recorded means. The liability for losses and damages for failure to notify does not apply if the insurer was informed of the claim by other means within the eight-day period, or if the notifying party proves that timely notification was not reasonably possible. | The policyholder must notify Allianz of a claim in writing (or by digital medium with a lasting record) within a maximum of 8 days from the date of occurrence or from the date of becoming aware of it, providing all relevant documentary or testimonial evidence. Claims can be reported via the e-SEGURNET app, the eCliente portal, by email to [email protected], or through an Allianz intermediary. | The policyholder or insured must notify Zurich of any covered claim in writing as soon as possible and no later than 8 days from the date of occurrence or the date they became aware of it, under penalty of liability for aggravated damages. Claim notification must be made using Zurich's own form, available on its website, or by any other recorded communication means. |
Bonus malus rules | The bonus-malus system applies to the coverages of Mandatory Civil Liability, Collision/Impact/Overturn, Fire/Lightning/Explosion, Theft/Robbery, Sole Collision and Solução Ano Seguro. The initial scale is determined by the number of years with insurance and the number of claims in the last 5 years, based on the national vehicle registration file, rating certificate or internal Ageas history. Each claim-free year advances one scale (up to scale 24, which gives a 50% discount). Contracts at scales 3, 4 or 5 with two consecutive claim-free years advance directly to scale 7. Claims involving Fire/Lightning/Explosion or Theft/Robbery do not affect the bonus-malus scale. Scale 24 provides a 50% discount; scale 7 is 0%; scales 1-6 are surcharges from +200% to +10%. First claims cause regression of 2 scales (or specific rules for higher scales). A fourth claim in the same year drops all scales to scale 1. The bonus/malus is applied at the next annual renewal following the event. | Allianz Auto applies a bonus-malus system: the premium increases by moving up one class for each claim under the Civil Liability or Collision/Rollover coverages. Good drivers are rewarded with discounts of up to 45% for a claims-free history. Policyholders transferring from another insurer with more than 5 years and no at-fault claims automatically receive a 45% discount. Premium adjustments are applied at each annual renewal. | Premiums for civil liability, collision/crash/fire/glass, fire/lightning/explosion, theft/robbery, self-protection, temporary deprivation of use, total loss, accompanied driving, and new vehicle value replacement coverages are adjusted annually according to the Bonus-Malus table based on claims experience. New contracts start at scale 0 unless prior claims history is evidenced by a Tarification Certificate or the National Registration Database. Bonus-Malus coefficients are applied to the net base commercial premium after all surcharges and discounts. The bonus regime is maintained if the insured vehicle is replaced by a vehicle of equivalent or lower category. |

Direct payment policy | The insurer substitutes the insured in the amicable or litigious settlement of any claim covered by the contract. The insurer responds directly to injured third parties or their heirs. For mandatory liability coverage, there is no deductible applicable against third-party claimants, although a deductible may be contractually agreed and the insurer retains the right of recourse against the policyholder. | Allianz Portugal pays indemnities directly to injured third parties as required by mandatory MTPL law. In cases covered by policy exclusions, Allianz may subsequently seek reimbursement from the vehicle driver. | Zurich handles claims directly with third parties through friendly or litigation settlement. The insurer substitutes the insured in settling any claim arising during the policy period and is subject to direct action by injured third parties or their heirs. |
