Zurich handles claims directly with third parties through friendly or litigation settlement. The insurer substitutes the insured in settling any claim arising during the policy period and is subject to direct action by injured third parties or their heirs.

Covers bodily injury damages caused to third parties by the insured vehicle up to the mandatory minimum capital of EUR 7,290,000 per accident, in accordance with Decree-Law No. 291/2007 of 21 August. An optional increase beyond this limit is available.

Covers material damages caused to third parties by the insured vehicle up to the mandatory minimum capital of EUR 1,220,000 per accident, in accordance with Decree-Law No. 291/2007 of 21 August as updated by Portaria n.º 263/2022. Legal Defence and Protection (Defesa e Proteção Jurídica)

Optional coverage (Condição Especial 021) guaranteeing legal protection expenses arising from claims related to the circulation of the insured vehicle, including criminal and civil defence, damages reclamation, defective repair claims, bail advances, and advance on court-adjudicated indemnities. Limits: criminal/civil defence EUR 1,500 each; defective repair reclamation EUR 2,500; bail EUR 4,500; advance on court indemnities EUR 2,500 per claim / EUR 6,500 per year; administrative costs EUR 1,500; traffic code infractions EUR 250; court costs EUR 1,500. Green Card (International Insurance Certificate)

Covered

The mandatory civil liability coverage extends to all EU member states, EEA countries (Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway), Switzerland, Croatia, Faroe Islands, Channel Islands, Gibraltar, Isle of Man, Republic of San Marino, Vatican City, Andorra, and other countries whose national insurance services have adhered to the Agreement. Extension to further territories is possible through a valid Green Card.

Roadside Assistance (Assistência a Veículos e Ocupantes)

Optional coverage (Condição Especial 017/035/045/034/019) providing roadside assistance to the insured vehicle and its occupants including towing, breakdown, repatriation of the vehicle, replacement vehicle due to breakdown (up to 5 days, 3 occurrences per year under the Completa tier), transport of occupants, and hotel expenses. Valid in Portugal, all European countries, and non-European Mediterranean basin countries (Turkey, Syria, Lebanon, Israel, Palestine, Egypt, Libya, Tunisia, Algeria, Morocco), except the replacement vehicle due to breakdown which is valid only in Portugal. Specific capital limits depend on the contracted modality (Base 045, Completa 017, Master 034, Coleção 035, Aluguer 019).

Driver Personal Accident (Responsible Driver)

Excluded

Bodily injury suffered by the driver of the insured vehicle who is responsible for the accident is explicitly excluded from the mandatory civil liability guarantee. Coverage for the driver can only be obtained through the optional Ocupantes da Viatura coverage (Condição Especial 015 or 028 – exclusive driver occupant).

Passenger and Occupant Personal Accident (Cobertura Complementar de Ocupantes)

Optional

Optional coverage (Condição Especial 015 – Ocupantes da Viatura) covering all passengers transported gratuitously in the insured vehicle including the driver, for death, permanent disability, temporary incapacity, and medical/repatriation expenses, worldwide. Capital limits as set in the Particular Conditions. Death indemnity doubles if seatbelt is proven to be worn. For minors under 14, death indemnity is limited to funeral expenses. Optional exclusive-driver version also available (Condição Especial 028).

territorial_scope

The mandatory civil liability coverage is valid across EU member states, EEA countries (Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway), Switzerland, Croatia, Faroe Islands, Channel Islands, Gibraltar, Isle of Man, San Marino, Vatican City, Andorra, and other adherent countries. Extension to additional territories is possible via a valid Green Card. Optional own-damage and other voluntary coverages are generally limited to mainland Portugal and the Autonomous Regions of Madeira and the Azores, unless otherwise specified in the Special or Particular Conditions.

green_card_rules

The Green Card (international insurance certificate) evidences insurance coverage abroad. It is issued by Zurich and must be presented to prove insurance in countries outside Portugal. For vehicles habitually parked in Portugal, valid proof of insurance includes the Green Card, provisional certificate, payment receipt, or the civil liability certificate. For vehicles habitually parked outside the EEA, additionally the frontier insurance certificate is required. The insured must notify Zurich in writing within 24 hours of vehicle sale and return the Green Card.

driver_restrictions

Coverage applies to the policyholder, vehicle owner, usufructuary, acquirer with reservation of title or financial lessee, and all legitimate holders and drivers. Exclusions apply when the vehicle is driven by an unlicensed person, or by a person under the influence of alcohol, narcotics or drugs, or who abandons the scene. The Autoproteção (Condição Especial 005) coverage requires the driver to hold a valid driving licence for more than 5 years. Accompanied driving by a tutor is available as an optional extension (Condição Especial 047).

claim_notification_deadline

The policyholder or insured must notify Zurich of any covered claim in writing as soon as possible and no later than 8 days from the date of occurrence or the date they became aware of it, under penalty of liability for aggravated damages. Claim notification must be made using Zurich's own form, available on its website, or by any other recorded communication means.

bonus_malus_rules

Premiums for civil liability, collision/crash/fire/glass, fire/lightning/explosion, theft/robbery, self-protection, temporary deprivation of use, total loss, accompanied driving, and new vehicle value replacement coverages are adjusted annually according to the Bonus-Malus table based on claims experience. New contracts start at scale 0 unless prior claims history is evidenced by a Tarification Certificate or the National Registration Database. Bonus-Malus coefficients are applied to the net base commercial premium after all surcharges and discounts. The bonus regime is maintained if the insured vehicle is replaced by a vehicle of equivalent or lower category.
