Key conditions
Territorial scope
Mandatory RC and facultative RC cover the EU/EEA plus UK, Andorra, Gibraltar, Iceland, Norway, Switzerland and Serbia; damage-to-vehicle covers and driver/occupant protection follow the same scope as the mandatory RC; travel assistance to persons is worldwide (with some exceptions valid only outside Portugal), while vehicle/occupant roadside assistance covers Portugal, the rest of Europe and non-European Mediterranean-basin countries.
Green card rules
Proof of the mandatory MTPL contract is given by the international insurance certificate ('Carta Verde'), provisional certificate, payment notice, or civil liability certificate; for vehicles habitually parked outside the EEA, a frontier insurance certificate is also required. Policyholders paying premiums in instalments shorter than four months, whose insurer only issues provisional certificates, may request issuance of the international certificate free of charge within 5 business days.
Driver restrictions
Cover excludes the driver responsible for the accident from bodily-injury indemnity under mandatory RC, and material damage caused to the responsible driver, the policyholder, and closely related persons; facultative covers are further excluded when the driver lacks a valid licence for the vehicle category, drives under the influence of alcohol above the legal limit or drugs, refuses an alcohol/drug test, or flees the scene before police arrival.
Claim notification deadline
The policyholder or insured must notify the insurer in writing as soon as possible, and never later than 8 days from the date of the occurrence or the date they became aware of it, providing all relevant documentary/testimonial evidence.
Bonus-malus rules
Applies a bonus/malus (no-claims bonus/surcharge) table with 21 levels (9 to 21), where the premium percentage ranges from 300% (level 9, worst) down to 44% (level 21, best); the level for the following annuity depends on the number of claims (0, 1, 2, 3, or more than 3) recorded in the current annuity. Only claims resulting in an indemnity payment or a reserve for which the insurer has accepted liability towards third parties count for bonus/malus purposes; the table applies solely to the Civil Liability and Choque/Colisão/Capotamento covers.
