MAPFRE - Seguros Gerais, S.A.
MAPFRE
MAPFRE is a travel insurance for the Portugal market with online purchase and 24/7 assistance.
Direct payment
Most benefits are paid as reimbursement against original invoices/receipts submitted by the insured person, while urgent assistance services (transport, repatriation, hospital coordination) are arranged and paid directly by MAPFRE's assistance network; a policy excess (franquia) applies to certain medical claims and must be borne by the insured person.
Geographic scope
Worldwide, excluding countries at war or officially prohibited/interdicted destinations
Trips must start and/or end in Portugal; cover extends worldwide except to countries in a state of war or subject to interdiction, as specified in the Particular Conditions
Unique selling points
- No excess applies except a 30 km mileage franchise for medical assistance claims within Portugal.
- Family or group policies can include up to 10 people under a single contract.
- 24-hour travel assistance service backing medical, transport and repatriation guarantees.
- Two selectable tiers, Standard and Plus, let customers raise capital limits and add extras such as ATM-robbery cover and pet veterinary expenses.
- Worldwide coverage for both leisure and business trips, with instant online simulation and purchase.

24/7 assistance line
Covered
MAPFRE provides a dedicated travel assistance phone line to coordinate medical, transport and other emergency services described in the Travel Assistance special condition; the official product page advertises round-the-clock (24h) assistance, although certain ancillary services such as the 'Traveller Consultation' operate only Monday-Friday, 9am-7pm.
Key conditions
Assistance call deadline
The insured person (or their family, if incapacitated) must contact MAPFRE's assistance service before arranging any treatment or service; if prior contact is impossible, it must be made as soon as possible.
Unauthorized treatment
Services or expenses arranged by the insured person on their own account, without MAPFRE's prior authorisation, are not covered.
Purchase while abroad
Insurance cannot be purchased once the trip has already started; a person who began travelling before taking out the policy is not considered an insured person, and MAPFRE's FAQ confirms the policy must be purchased before departure.
Chronic conditions
Chronic or pre-existing illnesses are excluded in general, except for an acute, unforeseen manifestation of the chronic condition requiring immediate care, which may be covered as a life-threatening emergency up to the pre-existing-conditions sublimit.
Pregnancy
Pregnancy is covered only for unforeseeable complications; normal/uncomplicated childbirth, births from the 31st week of gestation onward, births abroad from the 36th week, and non-medically justified voluntary termination of pregnancy are excluded.
Pre-existing condition exclusions
Pre-existing illnesses or injuries are excluded from cover, unless there is an acute manifestation representing a life-threatening emergency, which is covered only until the insured person is stabilised, within the pre-existing-conditions sublimit and limited to one claim per policy or trip.
Coverage duration limit
Travel Assistance guarantees apply only during the first 90 days of the trip (unless a longer period is agreed in the Particular Conditions), and the policy's general exclusions bar trips lasting more than 90 consecutive days; note that MAPFRE's public product page separately advertises this as insurance 'for trips up to 60 days', a figure that conflicts with the 90-day rule stated in the policy wording.
