Direct payment

Emergency medical/dental coverage is secondary insurance. Claims must first be submitted to any existing health insurance provider. If no health insurance exists, or if it is known that the existing health insurance does not provide coverage in the geographical area where the medical emergency is treated, claims may be submitted directly to Mondial Assistance. Any payment received from any other insurer or entity will be deducted from the claim. For inpatient hospitalization, Mondial Assistance may guarantee or advance payments up to the coverage limit where accepted by the medical facility.

Geographic scope

Romania and abroad (outside country of residence)

Three selectable zones: (1) Europe (geographical Europe including Mediterranean states, Canary Islands, Madeira, Azores, Russian Federation); (2) Worldwide excluding USA and Canada (all countries except USA, Canada, and North Korea); (3) Worldwide including USA and Canada (all countries except North Korea). Coverage applies only outside the insured's country of residence.

Key conditions

Assistance call deadline

For emergency assistance during the trip, the insured or someone on their behalf must contact Mondial Assistance before any transportation arrangements are made. If Mondial Assistance did not authorize and arrange transport, they will only pay up to what they would have paid if they had made the arrangements. Emergency assistance line is available 24/7 at +40 21 312 22 37.

Unauthorized treatment

Emergency medical/dental coverage is secondary insurance. Claims must first be submitted to any existing health insurer. Any payment received from another insurer or entity will be deducted from the claim. For trip cancellation: travel suppliers must be notified within 48 hours of discovering the need to cancel. For trip interruption: suppliers must be notified within 24 hours. Failure to notify within these deadlines may reduce or eliminate reimbursement for the difference in refund received.

Purchase while abroad

The policy applies for a specific trip and cannot be renewed. Coverage is effective at 00:00 on the day after the order is received and the full premium is paid. The order must be received and the full premium paid on or before the departure date. For trip cancellation packages, if departure is in less than 30 days, the policy must be purchased simultaneously with the trip booking (within 3 calendar days of booking).

Chronic conditions

Chronic diseases that meet the definition of pre-existing medical conditions are excluded from all coverages. For heart disease, stroke, cancer, diabetes (type 1 and 2), migraine, epilepsy, and multiple sclerosis, the pre-existing period is 24 months before policy issuance. For all other conditions, the reference period is 120 days before policy issuance.

Pregnancy

Normal, complication-free pregnancy and childbirth are excluded from emergency medical coverage. Pregnancy of the insured person is listed as a covered reason for trip cancellation under the Premium coverage option. Fertility treatments and elective abortion are explicitly excluded under General Exclusions.

Pre-existing condition exclusions

Pre-existing medical conditions are explicitly excluded from all coverages. A condition is pre-existing if it was treated, presented symptoms, or required prescribed medication in the 120 days before policy issuance (or 24 months for heart disease, stroke, cancer, diabetes, migraine, epilepsy, and multiple sclerosis). The condition does not need to be formally diagnosed. The policy also does not cover any loss, condition, or event that was known, foreseeable, intended, or expected when the policy was purchased.

Coverage duration limit

Maximum single trip duration is 90 days. Coverage ends at 23:59 on the date indicated in the insurance policy, or earlier if the trip ends, the policy is cancelled, a trip cancellation claim is filed, the insured arrives at a medical facility due to a medical reason, or on the last day of coverage for one-way trips. If the return journey is delayed due to a covered event, coverage is extended until the earliest possible return to the point of origin or principal residence.
