Direct payment

Allianz pays third-party claimants directly up to the agreed coverage sum. If the policyholder breaches an obligation (e.g. driving under the influence, unlicensed driving), Allianz retains a right of recourse up to EUR 11,000 per claim and EUR 22,000 per insurance event in total.

Geographic scope

Europe

Geographic Europe and all states party to the multilateral agreement between national insurance bureaux of EEA member states and associated states of 30 May 2002; coverage extends to statutory minimum in each visited state for vehicles with foreign plates

Unique selling points

  • Selectable coverage sums of EUR 7.6 Mio, 15 Mio, or 30 Mio — well above the Austrian statutory minimum of EUR 6 Mio.
  • 5-stage Superbonus system (S5–S1) delivers up to 60% premium discount for long-term claim-free drivers, with annual rather than biennial step-downs.
  • Basic Kfz-Assistance (roadside help, towing) is included in all packages including the entry COMFORT level at no extra charge.
  • Green Card available at any time as a free digital download via the Allianz customer portal, with no additional formalities for most European countries.
  • Modular 'Mein Kfz' package structure (COMFORT / PLUS / EXTRA / MAX) allows customers to start with MTPL only and add Teilkasko or Vollkasko without switching insurer.

Coverage limits

Bodily injury liability

Covered

Covers claims for bodily injury or death of third parties caused by use of the insured vehicle. Statutory minimum under KHVG §9(4)(d) is EUR 5,000,000 for all other vehicles within the lump-sum cover. Allianz offers selectable higher sums (EUR 7.6 Mio, 15 Mio, or 30 Mio lump sum).

Property damage liability

Covered

Covers third-party property damage caused by use of the insured vehicle. Statutory minimum under KHVG §9(4) is EUR 1,000,000 within the lump-sum cover. Higher lump-sum options (EUR 7.6 Mio, 15 Mio, 30 Mio) also elevate this sub-limit proportionally.

Legal defence (passive)

Covered

The insurer is authorised to defend and settle third-party claims on behalf of the policyholder, including contesting unfounded claims in court at the insurer's cost. Telephone legal advice on vehicle-related matters is included in all Mein Kfz packages (up to 12 calls per year), but cost coverage for separate legal proceedings (Kfz-Rechtsschutz) is not included and requires a separate policy.

Green Card (International Certificate of Insurance)

Covered

The Green Card is issued by Allianz and confirms MTPL coverage when travelling abroad. It is not mandatory in EU/EEA states and Switzerland but required in countries such as Albania, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Belarus, North Macedonia, Montenegro, Moldova, and Ukraine. Coverage in the visited state extends at least to the statutory minimum required for foreign-registered vehicles. A 'small Green Card' is available free of charge for most covered countries; a 'large Green Card' (with premium surcharge) is required for Azerbaijan, Iran, Israel, Morocco, Russia, Tunisia, and Turkey.

Roadside assistance (Kfz-Assistance)

Covered

Basic Kfz-Assistance is included in all Mein Kfz packages including COMFORT. It covers on-site repair or towing to the nearest qualified workshop in the event of breakdown or accident, including electric vehicles being towed to a qualified EV workshop. An extended version with additional services (replacement vehicle, accommodation) is included in EXTRA and MAX packages.

Driver accident insurance

Excluded

The COMFORT (MTPL-only) package does not include accident insurance for the driver. The Insassenunfallversicherung covering the driver and all passengers is included in the EXTRA and MAX packages, and is also available as a paid add-on. The MTPL policy itself explicitly excludes claims by the driver for their own bodily injury.

Passenger accident insurance (Insassenunfallversicherung)

Conditional

Passenger accident insurance (Insassenunfallversicherung) covering accidental injury to driver and all passengers is not included in the base COMFORT package but is included in the EXTRA and MAX packages. It is also available as an optional paid add-on to any package. The standard MTPL covers passenger bodily injury claims against the policyholder as third-party liability, but does not provide first-party accident benefits to passengers.

Key conditions

territorial_scope

Coverage extends throughout geographic Europe and all states party to the multilateral agreement between national insurance bureaux (as of October 2006: Andorra, Belgium, Denmark, Germany, Estonia, Finland, France, Greece, Great Britain, Ireland, Iceland, Italy, Croatia, Latvia, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Netherlands, Norway, Austria, Poland, Portugal, Sweden, Switzerland, Slovakia, Slovenia, Spain, Czech Republic, Hungary, Cyprus; more recent versions also include Bulgaria, Romania, Serbia). When travelling by water, coverage is not interrupted provided loading/unloading ports are within the territorial scope.

green_card_rules

The Green Card is provided by Allianz free of charge for most countries covered under the multilateral agreement. It is not required in EU/EEA states and Switzerland but is mandatory in Albania, Bosnia-Herzegovina, Belarus, North Macedonia, Montenegro, Moldova, and Ukraine. For Azerbaijan, Iran, Israel, Morocco, Russia, Tunisia, and Turkey a 'large Green Card' must be requested and entails a premium surcharge for the period of travel. The Kosovo is explicitly excluded from Green Card coverage; a border insurance policy must be purchased there. The Green Card is downloadable at any time via the Allianz customer portal.

driver_restrictions

The driver must hold a valid driving licence for the vehicle category. Coverage is void (subject to recourse up to EUR 11,000/EUR 22,000) if the driver lacks the required licence or operates the vehicle under the influence of alcohol or drugs (as established by a final administrative or court decision). Passengers who could not reasonably have been aware of the driver's incapacity remain covered. The policyholder must comply with all agreed vehicle use restrictions.

claim_notification_deadline

The policyholder must notify the insurer in writing within one week of becoming aware of: (1) the occurrence of an insured event with details of the circumstances; (2) a claim being made by the injured third party; (3) the initiation of related administrative or court proceedings. In cases of personal injury, the nearest police station must be notified immediately. Where the policyholder compensates the injured party within four weeks of the event, the notification deadline is extended to six months from the event, provided the court proceedings obligation (3) is observed.

bonus_malus_rules

A Bonus-Malus system applies to passenger cars, estate cars (Kombinationskraftwagen) and light commercial vehicles up to 1 tonne payload without special use. The scale runs from Superbonus S5 (40% of tariff premium) to level 17 (200% of tariff premium), with level 9 (100%) as the entry level for new policyholders without a prior claims history. The observation period runs from 1 October to 30 September. After each claim-free period the policyholder moves one level lower (cheaper) at the next main due date from 1 January. Each counted claim triggers a three-level increase. A claim is counted only if the insurer has paid or reserved for it; the policyholder may reimburse within six weeks to prevent the claim from affecting the rating. Prior claims history from previous insurers is recognised under KHVG §16. Superbonus levels S1–S5 require at least nine consecutive claim-free periods (six months for new entrants at level 9). The rating is transferable to close family members and replacement vehicles within defined timeframes.
