Generali
Generali is a motor third-party liability insurance for the AT market with no online purchase and 24/7 assistance.
Direct payment
Generali handles claims directly with injured third parties; the insurer is authorised to settle or defend claims in the policyholder's name within the agreed insurance sum (AKHB 2019 Art. 16). The policyholder must not acknowledge liability without insurer consent.
Geographic scope
AT
Europe (geographic sense); at minimum all states signatory to the EEA Green Card Agreement; abroad at least the statutory minimum of the visited state or the contractually agreed sum, whichever is higher (AKHB 2019 Art. 4–5)
Unique selling points
- Bonus scale extends to level -3 (45% of tariff premium), meaning accident-free drivers reach lower premiums faster than the market standard, and at level -3 a claim causes no premium increase.
- Insurance sum optionally upgradeable to EUR 30 million — well above the statutory minimum of EUR 7.6 million — for comprehensive protection in severe accident scenarios.
- The Kfz-Sicherheitspaket bundle combines MTPL, passenger accident cover, and 24/7 roadside assistance (Tip&Tat KfzAktiv Plus) at up to 20% package discount compared to buying products individually.
- Up to 20% UmweltAktiv-Bonus discount on MTPL premiums for electric vehicles and low-emission cars (CO2 ≤ 100 g/km), plus cyber attack coverage via the Elektroplus-Paket add-on.
- Optional Kfz-Europaschutz guarantees full Austrian-law compensation for innocent accident victims hit by foreign-insured vehicles across the EU and 8 further European countries, handled directly by Generali without the need to sue abroad.
Coverage limits
Bodily injury liability (combined with property damage as lump-sum)
Covered
Covers bodily injury and property damage claims up to the agreed lump-sum insurance amount. The statutory minimum for standard vehicles is EUR 7,600,000 (KHVG §9); Generali offers optional higher sums up to EUR 30,000,000. Within the lump sum, personal injury claims are covered up to EUR 6,300,000 per event at statutory minimum.
Property damage liability (combined lump-sum with bodily injury)
Covered
Property damage is covered within the same lump-sum insurance amount as bodily injury (minimum EUR 7,600,000, up to EUR 30,000,000 optional). Within the lump sum, property damage claims are covered up to EUR 1,300,000 at statutory minimum (KHVG §9 para. 4). Pure financial losses (bloße Vermögensschäden) are additionally covered up to EUR 80,000 per claim.
Legal defence of unfounded third-party claims
Covered
The insurer covers judicial and extrajudicial costs of defending against third-party claims, including criminal proceedings that could give rise to civil liability, provided costs were incurred at the insurer's direction (VersVG §150). Defence of unfounded claims is a core element of MTPL coverage with no separate sub-limit stated.
Green Card (International Motor Insurance Certificate)
Covered
Coverage automatically extends to all Green Card signatory states (EEA and associated countries). Abroad, the insurance provides at least the statutory minimum required in the visited country, or the contractually agreed sum, whichever is higher. The insurer is obliged to issue the Green Card within 5 days of request (KFG §61).
Roadside assistance (Tip&Tat KfzAktiv Plus)
Optional
Tip&Tat KfzAktiv Plus is an optional add-on providing 24/7 breakdown and accident assistance. It is included as a mandatory component of the Kfz-Sicherheitspaket bundle. Key benefits include: towing/mobility assistance up to EUR 250; rental car up to EUR 80/day (max EUR 400); return journey up to EUR 365 (Austria) / EUR 2,200 (abroad); overnight accommodation up to EUR 75/night (4 nights max); vehicle retrieval; spare parts delivery abroad; child collection up to EUR 400 (Austria) / EUR 2,200 (abroad); pet care up to EUR 400.
Driver accident cover
Excluded
The MTPL policy does not cover accident insurance for the driver of the at-fault vehicle. This must be obtained separately via the optional Insassenschutz (passenger accident insurance), which is an add-on or part of the Kfz-Sicherheitspaket bundle. The Kfz-Top-Insassenschutz provides up to EUR 100,000 capital benefit for permanent disability and EUR 100/day hospital benefit (max EUR 3,000) if the driver wore a seatbelt.
Passenger accident cover (within MTPL)
Excluded
Passenger accident insurance is not included in the MTPL base policy. It is available as a separate optional add-on (Insassenschutz) or as a component of the Kfz-Sicherheitspaket bundle. MTPL only pays passengers of the opposing vehicle; own passengers must claim via liability determination (which can take years) or via the optional Insassenschutz.
Key conditions
territorial_scope
Coverage extends to Europe in the geographic sense, and at minimum to all states that have signed the EEA Green Card Agreement (as listed in the Appendix to AKHB 2019). Abroad, the insurer provides at least the minimum coverage required by the visited state for foreign-registered vehicles, or the contractually agreed sum, whichever is higher. The optional Kfz-Europaschutz (AKES 2019) extends full Austrian-law compensation to incidents within EU member states plus Andorra, United Kingdom, Liechtenstein, Monaco, Norway, San Marino, Switzerland, and Vatican City.
green_card_rules
In countries for which a Green Card is issued or for which its presentation has been waived under the EEA agreement, coverage extends to at least the locally required statutory minimum for foreign vehicles, or the contractually agreed insurance sum, whichever is greater. The insurer is authorised to issue the Green Card and must do so within 5 days of request (KFG §61). The Green Card coverage ceases at the end of the underlying policy contract even if the card shows a later date.
driver_restrictions
The driver must hold a valid driving licence as required by Austrian road traffic law. Coverage is restricted or excluded if: (a) the driver is not legally authorised to drive under applicable road traffic law; (b) the driver is under the influence of alcohol or drugs as determined by a final administrative or court decision; (c) the vehicle carries more passengers than permitted by law. Coverage loss for (a) and (b) does not apply against the policyholder and other co-insured persons who were not the driver and could not have known of the breach without fault.
claim_notification_deadline
Claims, third-party demands, and the initiation of administrative or court proceedings must be reported to Generali within one week of becoming known (AKHB 2019 Art. 9.3.3). In the event of bodily injury, the nearest police station must be notified immediately. The policyholder must not acknowledge liability without the insurer's consent. Failure to comply may result in partial or full loss of coverage unless the breach was neither intentional nor grossly negligent.
bonus_malus_rules
The Bonus-Malus system applies to passenger cars (including taxis/rental cars), motorhomes up to 3.5 t GVW, and light commercial vehicles up to 1.5 t payload. New entrants start at premium level 9 (100% tariff premium). Each claim-free observation period (1 Oct – 30 Sep) advances the policyholder one level lower (premium reduction). Each claim causing an insurer outlay results in regression of three premium levels. Generali's scale extends below 0 to levels -1, -2, and -3 (all at 45% of tariff premium); at level -3, a claim does not cause any premium increase after regression. Premium levels range from -3 (45%) to level 17 (200%). The insurer must provide a claims history certificate upon request (KHVG §16).
