Direct payment

The premium is paid in advance on the agreed due date, either annually, semi-annually, quarterly or monthly, by payment slip, direct debit or online, as agreed in the contract.

Geographic scope

Austria

Coverage applies in Europe in the geographical sense, and in any case in the territory of the states that signed the agreement between the national insurance bureaus of the EEA member states and other associated states of 30 May 2002; the scope can be extended contractually.

Unique selling points

  • 'SchadenFreude' feature: no premium increase after the first at-fault claim, unlike standard bonus-malus rules.
  • Up to 6 additional super-bonus levels beyond the top bonus level for long-term claim-free drivers.
  • Volume discount ('Mengenrabatt') on the MTPL premium when bundling additional GRAWE sidebyside products.
  • Special 'L17' pricing advantage for drivers under 22 years of age.
  • Modular GRAWE AUTOMOBIL package lets customers combine MTPL with casco, occupant accident, breakdown/accident and legal protection modules at a package price advantage.

Roadside assistance is not part of the base MTPL policy but is available as a separate optional add-on (GRAWE MOBIL COMPLETE Kfz-Assistance) tied to the MTPL contract, covering on-site breakdown help, towing, recovery costs up to EUR 3,000 domestically / EUR 5,000 abroad, overnight stays, replacement transport, rental car and other benefits per the AGMBC 2023 terms.

Passenger accident / medical expenses cover

Not established from the insurer's documents

Not part of the base MTPL policy and not an accident lump sum. As an optional add-on under GRAWE MOBIL COMPLETE Kfz-Assistance, medical costs abroad for authorised occupants injured in an accident with the insured vehicle are reimbursed up to a total of EUR 80,000 per year (this is a medical-expense reimbursement ceiling, not a fixed accident capital sum), plus search and rescue costs up to EUR 15,000 per person / EUR 30,000 per event.

Key conditions

Territorial scope

Coverage applies throughout Europe in the geographical sense; the territorial scope can be contractually extended.

Green card rules

The International Motor Insurance Card (IVK, formerly Green Card) serves abroad as proof of an existing MTPL policy and can be requested from GRAWE online in advance of travel.

Driver restrictions

No cover, restricted cover, or a right of recourse applies if the driver is under the influence of alcohol or drugs, drives without a valid licence, does not comply with agreed conditions of use of the vehicle, carries more passengers than permitted, or uses a vehicle without number plates under a swap-plate arrangement.

Claim notification deadline

Damages, claims, and the initiation of administrative or judicial criminal proceedings must be reported to GRAWE within one week.

Bonus-malus rules

Premiums are classified under the Austrian bonus-malus system; a first-time driver starts at base level 9, moves one level towards bonus after each claim-free year (observation period 1 October to 30 September), moves up 3 levels towards malus after an at-fault claim, and can progress up to 6 super-bonus levels beyond level 0; the 'SchadenFreude' feature waives the premium increase on the first claim.
