Geographic scope

Europe (geographical)

Cover extends to Europe in the geographical sense, and in any case to all states that signed the Agreement between the National Insurance Bureaux of the EEA Member States and other associated states of 30 May 2002 (Green Card system).

Unique selling points

  • Selectable liability sums up to EUR 30 million, well above the Austrian statutory minimum of EUR 7.6 million.
  • Free subsidiary driver liability cover for driving other people's cars or motorcycles across Europe, included from the EUR 10 million coverage level.
  • VAV Pannenhilfe roadside assistance can be added for emergency breakdown, accident, or theft support anywhere in Europe.
  • Bonus-malus scale rewards claim-free years down to premium level -2 (37% of base premium), with transfer of prior insurer's bonus level.

Coverage limits

Bodily Injury Liability

€10,000,000 – €30,000,000

VAV's motor third-party liability offers selectable combined sums insured of EUR 10, 15, 20 or 30 million per claim, covering justified bodily-injury (and property/pure financial loss) claims within one combined lump sum; the Austrian statutory minimum combined sum is EUR 7.6 million (with a EUR 6.3 million sub-limit for bodily injury) plus EUR 80,000 for pure financial loss, which applies unless a higher voluntary sum is agreed.

Property Damage Liability

€10,000,000 – €30,000,000

Property damage claims are covered within the same selectable combined sum insured (EUR 10-30 million) as bodily injury. The Austrian statutory minimum includes a EUR 1.2 million property-damage sub-limit within the overall EUR 7.6 million pauschal sum, plus EUR 80,000 additionally for pure financial loss not classed as bodily injury or property damage.

Legal Defence / Cost Coverage

Covered

The policy covers the defence against unfounded third-party claims; court and out-of-court defence costs are charged against the agreed sum insured rather than paid on top, and if claims exceed the sum insured, costs of litigation not initiated by the insurer are only borne proportionally. Where the injured party is insured with VAV as well, the policyholder may choose a lawyer at the insurer's expense.

Green Card / International Cover

Covered

In states for which an International Motor Insurance Card (Green Card) is issued or for which its presentation is waived under the 30 May 2002 agreement between national insurance bureaux, cover extends at least to the level prescribed for foreign-registered vehicles in that state, but never below the contractually agreed scope; cover ends with the end of the insurance contract regardless of any longer validity shown on the card. Signatory states are listed in the AKHB annex (EEA countries plus e.g. Switzerland, UK, Serbia, Andorra).

Roadside Assistance

Optional

VAV Pannenhilfe (roadside assistance) is not included in the base MTPL policy but can be added as a paid add-on, providing emergency help for breakdown, accident or theft across Europe.

Source

Driver Accident Cover

Excluded

Compensation claims by the vehicle's own driver are explicitly excluded from the MTPL policy; the driver is not covered for their own injuries under this liability product.

Passenger Accident Insurance

Optional

A fixed passenger accident benefit (Fahrzeuginsassenunfall-Versicherung) is not part of the base MTPL policy but is offered by VAV as a separate, purchasable add-on with its own terms (AFIUB); independently, passengers transported with the owner's consent are co-insured persons whose bodily-injury liability claims against the driver/owner are already covered within the combined MTPL liability sum.

Key conditions

Territorial scope

Cover applies in Europe in the geographical sense and at least in all states party to the 30 May 2002 agreement between national insurance bureaux of EEA and associated states.

Green card rules

In Green Card signatory states, cover corresponds at least to the level legally required for foreign-registered vehicles in the visited state, but never less than the contractually agreed scope, and always ends with the end of the policy.

Driver restrictions

Cover is restricted or subject to recourse if the driver is not legally licensed to drive, is impaired by alcohol or drugs (only if established by a final administrative or court decision), or fails to observe agreed conditions of vehicle use, subject to a per-obligation deductible of EUR 11,000 (max EUR 22,000 per claim), with unlimited recourse for intentional breaches.

Claim notification deadline

The insurance event, third-party claims, and any administrative or court proceedings must be reported to VAV within one week of becoming aware of them.

Bonus-malus rules

Premium is assessed under a bonus-malus system starting at premium level 9 (98% of base premium); each claim-free observation year (1 Oct-30 Sep) lowers the level by one step (down to -2, 37% of premium), while each chargeable claim raises it by three steps, up to level 17 (230%).
