DONAU Versicherung AG Vienna Insurance Group
DONAU
DONAU is a travel insurance for the Austria market with online purchase and 24/7 assistance.
Direct payment
Claims are generally reimbursed after the trip: receipted original invoices, a hospital confirmation of the inpatient stay and proof of rescue/return-travel costs must be submitted within one month of the end of the stay abroad. For planned hospital admissions, the insurer or its authorized partner must be informed immediately so costs can be clarified directly with the hospital, and in emergencies the SOS-repatriation partner is authorized to make advance payments on the insurer's behalf.
Geographic scope
Worldwide, excluding Austria and any country where the insured already has a residence
Coverage applies to all countries of the world except Austria and any country in which the insured person already had a residence before departure
Unique selling points
- Covers an unlimited number of trips per year, each for the first six weeks abroad, under a single annual policy.
- 24/7 SOS repatriation service via Tyrol Air Ambulance covers 100% of extra return-travel costs with no stated sum limit.
- No maximum age applies at enrollment, unlike many competing travel health products that cap entry age.
- Search and rescue costs for accident victims are reimbursed at 90% up to EUR 10,000.
- The policy can be concluded fully online, with immediate download of the contract right after purchase.
Coverage limits
Medical expenses abroad
Covered
Costs of medically unavoidable inpatient and outpatient treatment of illness or accident consequences abroad are reimbursed at up to 100% (including any social insurance benefit) or 90% (without social insurance contribution); the exact sum insured is set out in the individual policy.
Emergency treatment of acute illness or accident
Covered
Treatment of illness or accident consequences that arise acutely during a covered stay abroad is reimbursed at up to 100% (with social insurance contribution) or 90% (without); only medically unavoidable, appropriate and locally customary treatment costs are covered.
Inpatient hospital treatment
Covered
Costs of operative and non-operative inpatient treatment in standard accommodation of a public hospital (or comparably priced private clinic) are reimbursed at 90%, provided the insurer/partner is informed immediately after admission; if social insurance pays part of the cost, the amount exceeding the social insurance benefit is reimbursed, effectively up to 100%.
Outpatient treatment and medication
Covered
Doctor and medication costs for treatment outside a hospital are reimbursed at 90% where no social-insurance claim exists (the portion exceeding any social insurance benefit is reimbursed up to the maximum amounts stated in the policy leaflet/Merkblatt where a partial social insurance claim exists).
Emergency dental treatment
Conditional
Acute, medically unavoidable dental pain treatment is covered as part of the general outpatient/inpatient treatment benefit, but conservative and prosthetic dental treatment (fillings, dentures/tooth replacement) is explicitly excluded.
Transport to the nearest hospital
Covered
Costs of transport to the nearest hospital in the event of an accident or illness abroad are reimbursed at 90% where no social-insurance claim exists, or up to 100% where the amount exceeds a partial social insurance benefit.
SOS repatriation of the insured and family members
unlimited
The SOS repatriation service covers 100% of the additional cost of the homeward journey of the sick/injured insured person and of the cheapest homeward journey of co-insured family members/partners, with no sum limit according to the insurer's FAQ.
Repatriation of mortal remains
Covered
If the insured dies during a covered stay abroad, 100% of the cost of transferring the remains to the former place of residence is covered, provided the transport/transfer is arranged by a provider authorized under the accompanying policy leaflet (Merkblatt); no fixed sum is stated.
Search and rescue of accident victims
€10,000
The insurer covers 90% of the costs for search and rescue of accident victims, up to a maximum of EUR 10,000.
Epidemic/pandemic-related illness treatment
Conditional
There is no general exclusion for epidemic or pandemic illness in the health insurance; however, no cover applies to illness or accidents related to a crisis event if the insured deliberately travels to, or remains in, a region for which the Austrian authorities have issued a (partial) travel warning after the crisis began.
Pre-existing chronic/latent conditions
Conditional
For contracts concluded before the insured turns 75, acute attacks or episodes of existing chronic or latent illnesses occurring abroad are treated the same as newly arising illnesses and are covered. If the contract is newly concluded at age 75 or older, pre-existing conditions are not covered at all.

24/7 emergency assistance service
Covered
In case of a stationary treatment abroad or a necessary repatriation, the DONAU service line and its partner Tyrol Air Ambulance are available around the clock as the first point of contact.
Key conditions
Assistance call deadline
The insurer or its authorized partner must be informed immediately after admission to hospital, and any inpatient stay or outpatient treatment whose total cost exceeds EUR 5,000 must be reported without delay so the insurer can assess a possible repatriation.
Unauthorized treatment
If a hospital admission is not reported and treatment could have been arranged more cheaply via an organized repatriation, or if a partial social-insurance payment applies, the insured retains a deductible of 10% of the remaining costs after social insurance benefits; if social insurance pays nothing, the deductible is 20%.
Purchase while abroad
The policy cannot be taken out while already abroad: only persons with their ordinary residence in Austria can be insured, and cover only applies to trips for which the premium was paid before departure from Austria.
Chronic conditions
Acute attacks or episodes of existing chronic or latent illnesses that occur during a covered stay abroad are treated the same as newly arising illnesses and are covered, provided the contract was concluded before the insured turned 75.
Pregnancy
Pregnancy check-ups, childbirth and termination of pregnancy are excluded from cover.
Pre-existing condition exclusions
If the contract is newly concluded at age 75 or older, pre-existing chronic or latent conditions are not covered at all; for contracts concluded before age 75, acute flare-ups of such conditions abroad are covered.
Coverage duration limit
Cover applies only to the first six weeks (maximum 42 days) of each individual trip abroad undertaken while the policy is in force, regardless of how many trips are taken per year.
