Direct payment

Once the insurer's 24-hour emergency hotline is contacted, the insurer organizes necessary measures (hospital transport, treatment, repatriation, repatriation of remains) and pays the required costs directly to the service provider (e.g. the hospital). If costs for outpatient or inpatient treatment were paid by the insured person and a claim could have been made against a social or private health insurer, that claim must be filed first; failure to do so reduces the insurer's reimbursement by 20%.

Geographic scope

Selectable tariff: "Europe" or "Worldwide"

The "Europe" tariff covers Europe in the geographical sense, all Mediterranean riparian states and islands, Jordan, Madeira, the Azores and the Canary Islands, excluding Syria and Crimea. The "Worldwide" tariff covers the whole world except North Korea, Syria, Venezuela, Crimea and Iran. Medical benefits apply only abroad; the country of the insured person's main residence counts as domestic.

Unique selling points

  • Medical treatment abroad is covered up to €1,000,000, well above typical minimum travel-medical limits.
  • Instant online policy issuance: the policy and full product information are available for download immediately after completing the online purchase.
  • 24-hour emergency hotline included as standard, arranging treatment, hospital cost guarantees and repatriation directly with providers.
  • Baggage is replaced at new value (not depreciated value) for items up to 2 years old, unlike many competitors' time-value-only policies.
  • Bundles search-and-rescue cover up to €80,000 as a standard included benefit rather than a separate add-on.

Key conditions

Assistance call deadline

If inpatient, day-clinic or repeated outpatient treatment, repatriation, repatriation of remains or burial at the place of the incident becomes necessary, the insurer's 24-hour emergency hotline must be contacted as soon as possible to obtain any instructions from the insurer.

Unauthorized treatment

Failing to contact the 24-hour emergency hotline before required hospitalization, transfer transport or repatriation is a breach of a policy duty; under §6(3) of the Austrian Insurance Contract Act (VersVG) this can reduce or, in cases of intent or gross negligence, eliminate the insurer's obligation to pay, in proportion to how the breach affected the claim.

Purchase while abroad

The insurance must be concluded before the trip begins; taking out cover after departure is only possible with a special agreement with the insurer.

Chronic conditions

A chronic illness or accident sequela already present at the start of the trip is covered only if it unexpectedly becomes acute and is not otherwise excluded; total benefits for such pre-existing conditions are capped at €500,000.

Pregnancy

Unexpected severe pregnancy complications and premature births are covered up to and including the 35th week of pregnancy; the pregnancy itself is only insurable for cancellation purposes if the policy was concluded within 3 days of booking the trip.

Pre-existing condition exclusions

Pre-existing medical conditions or accident sequelae are covered only for unexpected, acute deterioration during the trip, subject to a combined maximum benefit of €500,000 across all such events.

Coverage duration limit

The KomplettSchutz policy covers a single trip with a maximum trip duration of 31 days.
