Direct payment

GRAWE issues cost-guarantee commitments to hospitals on request and settles medical treatment costs directly with the hospital, so insured persons generally do not need to pay upfront for guaranteed treatment.

Geographic scope

Worldwide

Worldwide coverage, excluding Iran, North Korea, Venezuela, Syria, Crimea and any country subject to an official Austrian travel warning; the travel medical/accident and personal liability modules apply only outside Austria; second homes (Zweitwohnsitz) are not covered destinations.

Unique selling points

  • Free 24/7 phone or video consultation with an Austrian doctor abroad, organized within 30 minutes, available up to four times per insurance year.
  • Direct cost-guarantee commitments and direct billing with hospitals abroad, so insured persons typically do not have to pay large medical bills upfront.
  • Search and rescue cover including helicopter rescue up to EUR 11,000 per insured person.
  • A repeat-trip benefit of up to EUR 3,300 is paid if a trip has to be redone after an emergency repatriation.
  • The Family & Friends option insures up to 2 adults and 5 minors travelling together on one policy, regardless of any family relationship between them.

24/7 Emergency Assistance Hotline

Round-the-clock emergency call centre (+43 316 81 39 00) staffed with emergency specialists, providing assistance in case of illness/accident, death, loss of travel documents or payment means, and prosecution measures; must be contacted immediately when an insured event occurs.

Source

Key conditions

Assistance call deadline

The 24-hour emergency call center must be contacted immediately when an insured event occurs; in non-urgent cases notification by email is also possible.

Unauthorized treatment

If the insured person paid for treatment themselves despite having social insurance coverage, they must first claim reimbursement from the social insurer; failure to do so reduces the insurer's benefit by 20%.

Purchase while abroad

Cover only applies to trips that begin after the insurance contract has been concluded; a policy cannot be taken out once travel has already started.

Chronic conditions

Chronic illnesses are only covered if they become unexpectedly acute after the trip has started, with treatment costs capped at EUR 15,000 and emergency/repatriation transport capped at EUR 50,000.

Pregnancy

Pregnancy complications, including unexpected premature births, are covered up to the end of the 35th week of pregnancy; pregnancies and deliveries from the 36th week onward, terminations, and contraception-related treatment are excluded.

Pre-existing condition exclusions

There is no cover for illnesses, ailments or planned operations that had already occurred or were foreseeable at the time the contract was concluded or the trip started.

Coverage duration limit

If the agreed contract duration exceeds one year, cover applies only to the first 45 days of each individual trip.
