Merkur Versicherung Aktiengesellschaft
HanseMerkur
HanseMerkur is a travel insurance for the Austria market with no online purchase and 24/7 assistance.
Direct payment
Via the worldwide emergency call service, HanseMerkur issues a direct cost-guarantee (cashless settlement) to hospitals on request, provided a copy of the insured person's ID or passport is submitted to the emergency call centre; if no coverage from this or another insurer is confirmed, HanseMerkur advances up to EUR 15,000 to the hospital as a loan repayable by the insured within one month of invoicing.
Geographic scope
Worldwide, with domestic Austrian trips covered only under specific conditions
Cover applies worldwide for trips abroad. Trips within Austria are covered only if they include at least one booked overnight stay and the destination is at least 50 km (air-line distance) from the insured person's permanent residence. The Umsteigeschutz (connection protection) benefit applies only within geographic Europe including Mediterranean countries, the Canary Islands, the Azores, Madeira, Armenia, Jordan and Russia up to the Urals.

Coverage limits
Medical treatment costs abroad
unlimited
Outpatient medical treatment, medically necessary treatment, medication and dressing materials, radiology, physical therapy, unavoidable operations and medical transport abroad are reimbursed at the customary local cost in full (unlimited), in both the Sorglos and Premium tiers. Inpatient (hospital) treatment is subject to a separate limit — see 'hospitalization'.
Emergency medical treatment
unlimited
Non-deferrable/emergency treatments, urgent operations and emergency ambulant care abroad are covered in unlimited amount (at customary local rates) in both tiers. Emergency call centre also arranges guidance to a German- or English-speaking doctor.
Inpatient hospital treatment
unlimited
Unavoidable inpatient hospital treatment abroad is covered. In the Sorglos tier, costs are capped at EUR 300,000 per insured event; in the Premium tier there is no cap on inpatient treatment costs.
Outpatient treatment
unlimited
Ambulant medical treatments abroad are reimbursed in full at customary local cost, without a monetary ceiling, in both the Sorglos and Premium tiers.
Emergency dental treatment
unlimited
Pain-relieving conservative dental treatment, simple fillings and repairs of existing dentures performed or prescribed by a dentist are covered in both tiers, with no separate monetary limit stated (reimbursed as part of general treatment costs). Dentures, crowns, implants and orthodontic treatment are explicitly excluded.
Medical transport to nearest hospital
unlimited
Additional costs of transport to the nearest suitable hospital at the destination, and medically justified transport back to the accommodation, are covered without a monetary ceiling in both tiers.
Medical repatriation to home country
unlimited
Medically sensible repatriation to a hospital near the insured's home address is covered without a monetary ceiling in both tiers. Costs of a necessary escort or medical escort during the transport are capped at EUR 2,500 per insured event in the Sorglos tier, while the Premium tier has no cap on escort costs.
Repatriation / burial costs
unlimited
In the event of death abroad, HanseMerkur covers burial costs abroad up to the amount that repatriation would have cost, or the additional costs of repatriating the deceased to their permanent residence, in full, in both tiers.
Search, rescue and recovery costs
€20,000 – €80,000
Under the Reise-Unfallversicherung (travel accident cover) bundled with this product, costs for search, rescue or recovery operations by public or private rescue services, transport to hospital, and additional return-travel costs are covered up to EUR 20,000 in the Sorglos tier and up to EUR 80,000 in the Premium tier.
COVID-19 treatment costs
unlimited
The policy does not list any pandemic, epidemic or communicable-disease exclusion in the Reise-Krankenversicherung (the exclusions list only names HIV specifically). COVID-19 illness abroad is therefore covered as an ordinary illness under the general outpatient/inpatient treatment terms (unlimited outpatient cost reimbursement; inpatient capped at EUR 300,000 in Sorglos, unlimited in Premium).
Pre-existing conditions
Conditional
Treatment abroad is excluded only if it was the sole or a contributing reason for undertaking the trip, or if it was already foreseeable at the time of departure that treatment would be needed during the planned course of the trip (unless the trip was undertaken due to the death of a spouse or first-degree relative). Pre-existing conditions unrelated to the reason for travel and not foreseeably requiring treatment are otherwise covered under the normal illness benefits.
Winter sports cover
No limit stated
No dedicated winter sports benefit or exclusion is stated in the reviewed terms and conditions or benefits overview.
Adventure / extreme sports cover
No limit stated
No dedicated adventure or extreme sports benefit is stated. The only related restriction found is a general exclusion of events occurring during motorsport competitions (time trials and rallies) and their associated training.
Pregnancy complications
unlimited
Medically necessary treatment for pregnancy-related complaints, deliveries up to the end of the 36th week of pregnancy (premature birth), treatment for miscarriage, and medically necessary termination of pregnancy are covered as part of outpatient treatment, with no separate monetary cap, in both tiers. Treatment of newborns following a birth during the trip is also covered.
Private liability while travelling
€750,000 – €1,000,000
General everyday private liability risks occurring on the trip (e.g. as head of family/household, cyclist, sports participant) are covered up to EUR 750,000 in the Sorglos tier and up to EUR 1,000,000 in the Premium tier. Liability for damage to rented accommodation (Mietsachschäden) is covered up to EUR 25,000 in both tiers.
Legal assistance / legal cost cover
Covered
Within the Reise-Haftpflichtversicherung, costs of a legal dispute over a covered liability claim are borne in full and are not counted against the insured sum, in both tiers. Separately, under Reise-Assistance, HanseMerkur helps arrange a lawyer/interpreter and advances (as a repayable loan, not an indemnity) up to EUR 3,000 for legal, court and interpreter costs in case of arrest or threat of arrest, and up to EUR 13,000 as a loan for bail, identical in both tiers.
24/7 emergency assistance hotline
Covered
A worldwide 24-hour emergency call service (+43 1 315-2444) is available to all insured persons in both tiers, providing help with medical emergencies, hospital cost guarantees, doctor referrals, loss of documents/payment cards, rebooking/delays and other travel emergencies.
Key conditions
Assistance call deadline
In case of inpatient hospital treatment, the insured must contact HanseMerkur's worldwide emergency call service without delay and before extensive diagnostic or therapeutic measures begin.
Unauthorized treatment
If the insured culpably (intentionally or through gross negligence) breaches a duty such as the obligation to contact the emergency service or to submit truthful and complete information, HanseMerkur may be released from its obligation to pay benefits (per Section 6 VersVG). In the Sorglos tier specifically, failing to first claim available social/private health insurance benefits reduces HanseMerkur's payment by 20%.
Purchase while abroad
If the contract is concluded only after the trip has already started, cover applies only to travel bookings made after the contract was concluded, not to the ongoing trip.
Chronic conditions
There is no blanket exclusion for chronic illness; treatment abroad is excluded only where it was the reason for the trip or was already foreseeably necessary at the time of departure. Chronic condition flare-ups that were not foreseeable are covered as ordinary illness under the Reise-Krankenversicherung.
Pregnancy
Medically necessary treatment for pregnancy-related complaints, births up to the end of the 36th week (premature birth), miscarriage treatment and medically necessary termination of pregnancy are covered as outpatient treatment; treatment of a newborn born during the trip is also covered.
Pre-existing condition exclusions
Treatment is excluded only if it was the sole or a contributing reason for the trip, or if at the time of departure it was already certain that treatment would be needed during the planned course of the trip (exception: trip undertaken due to death of spouse or first-degree relative).
Coverage duration limit
The annual policy covers an unlimited number of trips per year, but if a single trip lasts longer than 62 days, cover under all included benefits ends from the 63rd day of that trip onward.
