Direct payment

When the insured contacts the insurer's 24-hour emergency hotline before hospitalization, transfer transport, repatriation or bringing home of a deceased person, the insurer organizes the necessary measures and pays the costs directly to the service provider (cashless settlement); this direct-payment arrangement does not apply to outpatient treatment, which the insured pays for and later claims back.

Key conditions

Assistance call deadline

Before a hospital stay, repeated outpatient/day-clinic treatment, repatriation, or repatriation/burial of a deceased person, the insured must contact the 24-hour emergency hotline as soon as possible to obtain the insurer's instructions.

Unauthorized treatment

If the insured pays for outpatient, inpatient or transfer transport costs themselves while also being covered by a social insurance scheme, they must first submit the claim to the social insurer; failure to do so reduces the insurer's benefit by 20%.

Purchase while abroad

The insurance must be concluded before the start of the trip; conclusion during the trip is only permitted with a special agreement with the insurer.

Chronic conditions

A chronic illness or accident sequela existing at the start of the trip is covered only if it unexpectedly becomes acute during the trip and is not otherwise excluded (e.g. cures, rehabilitation stays, and physiotherapy are always excluded).

Pregnancy

Unexpected severe pregnancy complications and premature birth are covered up to and including the 35th week of pregnancy, with newborn costs reimbursed within the mother's insured sum.

Pre-existing condition exclusions

Pre-existing conditions are covered if they unexpectedly become acute and are not excluded under the policy's exclusions; total benefits for such events are capped at EUR 500,000 combined for medical treatment and transport costs.

Coverage duration limit

Cover applies for the trip duration selected at purchase (premium table tiers range from 5 days up to 11 months); cover begins when leaving home/workplace and ends on return or on prior expiry of the policy.
