Direct payment

For inpatient hospital stays abroad, the insurer endeavours to settle costs directly with the hospital (cost guarantee) according to the specific product's benefit table; direct billing must be coordinated through the 24-hour OAFA emergency centre.

Geographic scope

Abroad (territorial scope depends on the specific package chosen; Austria and the insured's country of main residence never count as 'abroad')

Coverage applies to travel abroad; irrespective of nationality, Austria is never considered 'abroad', nor is the country where the insured person has their main residence.

Unique selling points

  • OAFA operates its own 24-hour emergency call centre and medical air ambulance service (Ärzteflugambulanz), a founding specialty of the company since 1977.
  • Comfort 365 offers a full 365-day annual policy with no cap on the length of any individual trip, unlike the Comfort 90 (max. 90 days) or Comfort Office (max. 5 days) variants.
  • For inpatient hospital treatment abroad, OAFA endeavours to settle the costs directly with the hospital instead of requiring the traveller to pay upfront.
  • Comfort 365 covers manual labor activities as well as private leisure travel, unlike the Comfort Office variant which excludes both.

Key conditions

Assistance call deadline

The OAFA emergency centre (tel. +43/1/40 144) must be notified immediately by phone for hospital admission, treatment costs expected to exceed EUR 1,000, or repatriation; if a hospital stay is expected to last more than 3 days, the centre must also be notified without delay, otherwise cover is lost or reduced.

Unauthorized treatment

Transports, repatriations or private-clinic transfers not organized or ordered by the OAFA emergency centre cannot be reimbursed; failing to submit claims to statutory or private health insurance first (or waiving/being refused reimbursement) results in a 20% deductible on medical costs.

Purchase while abroad

If the travel protection card is purchased after the trip has already begun, there is no insurance cover for that trip.

Chronic conditions

Heart disease, stroke, cancer, diabetes (type I and II), migraine and multiple sclerosis are excluded if treated (inpatient and/or outpatient) within the 12 months before conclusion of the policy; other chronic conditions are covered only when they become unexpectedly acute during the trip, subject to reduced insured sums.

Pregnancy

Pregnancy treatment, termination, childbirth, treatment of contraceptive-measure complications, and resulting complications are excluded; OAFA advises against foreign travel with a known pregnancy.

Pre-existing condition exclusions

Conditions requiring ongoing treatment at the time of policy conclusion or trip start are treated as already having occurred and are not covered; only a sudden, unexpected acute flare-up of a chronic condition is covered, with reduced insured sums.

Coverage duration limit

If a proven inability to be transported prevents the return journey after the end of the insurance period, treatment costs continue to be covered until transport capability is restored, for a maximum of 2 further months (extended liability / Nachhaftung).
