Direct payment

The insurer, through the assistance company Coris Bulgaria, pays directly to treating physicians, medical institutions, and rescue/transport organizations. If the insured pays out-of-pocket (in extraordinary cases or when instructed), original documents must be submitted to the insurer within 5 days of return to Bulgaria. Costs incurred without prior approval of the assistance company or insurer are excluded.

Medical expenses due to accident or acute illness

Covered

Covers necessary costs for medical examinations, treatment or surgical intervention, therapeutic and medical supplies, medical equipment, X-ray and laboratory tests, hospitalization (up to 25 days per event, up to 60 days aggregate), evacuation costs, emergency dental care, and other costs related to treatment or diagnosis. The insured sum is chosen by the policyholder and denominated in EUR or USD. For persons over 70, the medical expense limit for acute illness is capped at 4,000 EUR/USD regardless of the chosen insured sum.

Emergency medical treatment

Covered

The insurer through the assistance company selects and directs the insured to an appropriate medical institution or physician, provides transport to the medical institution if needed, and pays for medical consultations, treatment, medication, and evacuation within the agreed limit. Only emergency and urgent medical care is covered; non-urgent treatment that can be performed after return to Bulgaria is excluded.

Hospitalization

Covered

Usual and reasonable medical expenses for inpatient stay and use of hospital personnel are covered up to 25 days per insurance event and up to 60 days in aggregate for all events during the policy period. Hospitalization is defined as a minimum 24-hour stay in a medical institution by medical prescription for urgent examination, consultation, diagnosis, or treatment.

Outpatient treatment

Covered

Medical examinations, consultations, diagnostics, and outpatient treatment for acute illness or accident are included within the medical expenses coverage up to the agreed limit. Non-urgent outpatient care and treatments for undiagnosed conditions or self-treatment are excluded.

Emergency dental care

Covered

Covers actual costs of emergency dental care up to 350 EUR/USD aggregate for all events during the policy period. Covered: treatment to relieve acute sudden severe toothache due to a covered accident, incision of abscesses and phlegmons in the oral cavity, pulpitis, sudden broken or deeply damaged tooth, including anaesthesia, prescribed medications, and follow-up check after dental procedures. For persons over 70, dental treatment is excluded entirely.

Medical transport (evacuation)

Covered

Evacuation is covered within the agreed limit: initial medical transport from the site of the insured event to the nearest medical institution providing emergency care, and subsequent medical transport to the nearest specialized medical institution if the insured's condition requires continuation of treatment in a specialized facility. Ambulance costs are not included under the personal expenses risk (clause 57.4.1.1) but evacuation is included under medical expenses.

Medical evacuation

Covered

Included within the medical expenses risk. The insurer through the assistance company arranges and pays for evacuation (initial transport from the event site to the nearest emergency medical facility, and subsequent transport to the nearest specialized facility as needed) within the agreed limit.

Repatriation of remains

Covered

In the event of death of the insured, the insurer through the assistance company organizes and pays for: the coffin for international transportation of remains or cremation costs, and transportation of the body or cremated remains from the place of death to the burial place in Bulgaria or the country of permanent residence. Funeral ritual costs and funeral inventory are not included.

Optional additional risk. Upon payment of an additional premium, the insurer through the assistance company pays pre-approved actual costs for search and rescue by land, air, and water (including underwater search and rescue), first medical aid, and transport of the insured, incurred due to a covered accident or acute illness.

COVID-19 treatment

Conditional

COVID-19 is not explicitly listed as an included or excluded risk in the General Terms and Conditions (code 1801). If COVID-19 manifests as an acute illness (with acute onset requiring emergency investigation and treatment), it may be covered under the mandatory medical expenses risk, subject to all standard conditions. No separate COVID-19 clause is present in the T&C.

Pre-existing conditions

Excluded

Pre-existing accidents and/or pre-existing diseases (diagnosed before the start of the insurance) are excluded. Chronic diseases are excluded except in the case of unforeseen exacerbation so serious as to require emergency medical care to save the life of the insured; in that case the insurer pays costs only for the part of stabilizing the critical condition.

Optional

Participation in organized sports competitions and/or trainings is excluded by default. Coverage for sports activities (amateur or professional), competitions and trainings can be included upon payment of an additional premium. Amateur sports participation (without systematic training/competition and where sport is not the main profession) may qualify for standard coverage subject to premium loading.

Pregnancy complications

Conditional

Pregnancy, childbirth, abortion, or complications related to pregnancy are generally excluded. Exceptions: (1) Medical expenses related to saving the life of the pregnant woman and/or child are covered, provided that at the departure date at least two months remain until the medically determined term of pregnancy. (2) The insurer reimburses medical expenses in case of premature birth or abortion when caused by a covered accident.

Personal liability to third parties

Optional additional risk. The insurer pays court-awarded amounts up to the agreed policy limit for property and non-property damages caused by the insured to third parties during the insurance period. Exclusions include liability arising from use/ownership/maintenance of vehicles, vessels, aircraft, weapons, or real estate, non-fulfilment of contractual obligations, and professional liability.

24/7 assistance is provided through the assistance company Coris Bulgaria, a proven leader in international assistance services. Upon occurrence of an insured event, the insured must contact the assistance company within 24 hours. The assistance company selects and directs the insured to an appropriate medical institution, arranges transport, and coordinates all covered services.

Key conditions

Assistance call deadline

Upon occurrence of an insured event, the insured must immediately (within 24 hours) contact the assistance company or insurer at the telephone numbers indicated in the policy and provide: policy number, full name, EGN (ID number), policy validity period, location, and detailed information about the event. If admitted to a medical institution in a state where it was practically impossible to contact the assistance company, the insured must contact the assistance company within 24 hours from the moment their condition permits, but in all cases before leaving the medical institution.

Unauthorized treatment

Expenses incurred without the approval of the assistance company or the insurer are excluded (clause 12.1). If the insured's condition permitted contact but they failed to fulfil the obligation and chose a medical institution themselves, the insurer covers medical expenses only up to 50 EUR/USD (clause 50.1). If the insured fails to contact the assistance company, the insurer has the right to refuse payment or partially recognize any costs related to the event.

Purchase while abroad

The insurance must be concluded before the start of the trip, while the insured is on the territory of Bulgaria or their country of permanent residence. A policy concluded in violation of these conditions is invalid. Conclusion of a policy after the start of the trip when the insured is already abroad is permissible only if: the person has an active policy under 'Travel Assistance Abroad' with ZK Lev Ins, there is no interruption in coverage, and no insured event has occurred.

Chronic conditions

Chronic diseases are excluded, except in the case of unforeseen exacerbation so serious as to require emergency medical care to save the life of the insured. In such a case, the insurer pays the costs only for the part related to stabilizing the critical condition (clause 12.8).

Pregnancy

Pregnancy, childbirth, abortion, or complications related to pregnancy are generally excluded. Exception 1: Medical expenses for saving the life of the pregnant woman and/or the child are covered if at the departure date at least two months remain until the medically determined term. Exception 2: Medical expenses for premature birth or abortion caused by a covered accident are reimbursed (clauses 12.11, 12.11.1, 12.11.2).

pre_existing_conditions

Pre-existing accidents (any previous accident noted by a physician and/or diagnosed before the first day of insurance and/or which would require hospitalization/medication during the policy period) and pre-existing diseases (diagnosed before the start of the insurance) are excluded. Chronic diseases are excluded except for life-threatening acute exacerbation, in which case only stabilization costs are covered.

coverage_duration_limit

The insurance period can be from 1 to 365/366 days. Hospitalization is covered up to 25 days per insured event and up to 60 days in aggregate for all events during the policy period. Repatriation expenses due to accident or acute illness are covered for costs incurred up to 25 days after the date of occurrence of the insured event. If treatment continues without interruption abroad after policy expiry, costs incurred up to 5 days after the end of coverage are covered. A multi-trip policy can be issued for persons aged 18 to 70 for repeated business trips/specializations abroad, with coverage per trip of up to 30, 60, or 90 days.
