AIG Europe S.A. (formerly AIG Europe Limited, organizační složka pro Českou republiku)
AIG (Travel Guard)
AIG (Travel Guard) is a travel insurance for the Czech Republic market with online purchase and 24/7 assistance.
Direct payment
For outpatient treatment abroad the insured must generally pay the costs upfront and then claim reimbursement from AIG's claims department after returning to the Czech Republic, keeping all receipts and documents. If hospitalization is likely to exceed 24 hours, Travel Guard must be contacted immediately; failure to do so may result in a reduced benefit. An early return to the Czech Republic under the cancellation or medical-expenses sections requires prior approval from Travel Guard/AIG, otherwise the benefit may be reduced.
Geographic scope
Policyholder selects either the 'Europe' or 'Worldwide' territorial scope at the time of purchase.
Europe: territory of Europe west of the Urals, including adjacent islands and non-European countries bordering the Mediterranean, except Algeria, Israel, Jordan, Lebanon and Libya. World: anywhere in the world except Afghanistan, Cuba, Iraq or Sudan; travel to/from/through these four countries is excluded under both zones.
Unique selling points
- Gold tier offers a 15,000,000 CZK medical expenses limit abroad, well above typical entry-level travel policies.
- No deductible applies to medical treatment costs on any tier, unlike many other sections of the policy.
- Gold tier includes third-party liability cover up to 10,000,000 CZK, higher than many comparable market offerings.
- A dedicated, Czech-speaking Travel Guard emergency assistance hotline operates 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
- Covers unusual events not always included by competitors, such as hijacking, avalanche delays, and ski-lift/resort closures due to lack of snow.
Coverage limits
Medical and other expenses abroad
CZK 1,500,000 – CZK 15,000,000
Combined limit for acute medical, surgical and hospital treatment abroad, plus related costs (body/ashes repatriation, extra accommodation and return travel). Bronze: 1,500,000 CZK; Silver: 5,000,000 CZK; Gold: 15,000,000 CZK. No deductible applies to this section.
Emergency/acute medical treatment
CZK 1,500,000 – CZK 15,000,000
Acute medical, surgical or hospital treatment following an accident or illness during the trip is covered under the same combined 'medical and other expenses' limit as medical_expenses (Bronze 1,500,000 / Silver 5,000,000 / Gold 15,000,000 CZK); it is not an additional, separate sum.
Hospital treatment abroad
CZK 1,500,000 – CZK 15,000,000
In-patient/hospital treatment costs abroad are paid within the same combined Section C limit as medical_expenses (Bronze 1,500,000 / Silver 5,000,000 / Gold 15,000,000 CZK). A separate Gold-only daily hospital cash benefit also exists (see product_specific_constraints).
Outpatient treatment abroad
CZK 1,500,000 – CZK 15,000,000
Outpatient medical treatment abroad is reimbursed within the same combined Section C limit as medical_expenses. The insured typically pays upfront and claims reimbursement from AIG after returning to the Czech Republic.
Emergency dental treatment
CZK 5,000 – CZK 20,000
Sub-limit within Section C for acute dental treatment provided solely for immediate pain relief. Bronze: 5,000 CZK; Silver: 10,000 CZK; Gold: 20,000 CZK.
Medical transport / return travel
CZK 1,500,000 – CZK 15,000,000
Extra travel and accommodation costs for a medically necessary early return to the Czech Republic, or for an accompanying person, are covered under the same combined Section C limit as medical_expenses, subject to prior Travel Guard approval. It is a shared limit, not an additional sum.
Medical evacuation
CZK 1,500,000 – CZK 15,000,000
Travel Guard organizes and, where medically necessary and pre-approved, funds evacuation/repatriation within the same combined Section C limit as medical_expenses; it is not a separate additive sum.
Repatriation of remains
CZK 150,000
Costs of transporting the body or ashes back to the Czech Republic, or of burial/cremation abroad, are covered up to 150,000 CZK, the same fixed sub-limit for all three tiers.
Rescue/salvage costs
CZK 10,000
Statutory 'zachraňovací náklady' (rescue/salvage costs) are reimbursed above the policy limit, generally up to 2% of the relevant limit or sub-limit per claim, capped at 10,000 CZK. For rescue costs incurred to save human life or health, up to 30% of the relevant limit or sub-limit is paid instead. This is not a dedicated mountain/search-and-rescue benefit but a general statutory add-on.
COVID-19 treatment
No limit stated
Not mentioned anywhere in the provided policy terms; the document predates the COVID-19 pandemic.
Pre-existing medical conditions
Excluded
The definition of 'Illness' excludes any illness that is a result of, or connected with, a condition apparent before the trip began, or for which medical advice/treatment was recommended, sought, or should have been sought before departure. General exclusion 1(a) further excludes claims relating to a health condition known to the insured or another person before the insurance was taken out.
Winter/risk sports cover
Optional
Only in Silver, Gold
Ordinary downhill skiing and snowboarding are on the automatically-covered higher-risk activity list for all tiers at no extra cost. However, 'risk sports' such as off-piste skiing/snowboarding, heliskiing, monoskiing, skiing on artificial slopes etc. (Sections K–N) are excluded from Bronze entirely; for Silver/Gold single-trip policies they require explicit agreement and an additional premium (for trips up to 90 days), while annual Silver/Gold policies automatically cover these risk sports for trips up to 17 days. Risk-sports cover is excluded for anyone who has reached age 69 at the start of the trip.
Adventure/risk sports cover
Optional
Only in Silver, Gold
Common sports (golf, cycling, diving to 20m, trekking to 3000m without climbing gear, water skiing, hot-air ballooning, etc.) are automatically covered on all tiers. Higher-risk 'risk sports' (e.g. bungee jumping, paragliding, parachuting, kitesurfing, canyoning-adjacent activities, high-altitude trekking, ice hockey) are unavailable on Bronze, and on Silver/Gold single-trip policies require explicit agreement plus an additional premium; annual Silver/Gold policies auto-cover them for trips up to 17 days. Canyoning, mountaineering and potholing (and related equipment) remain excluded under all tiers.
Pregnancy complications
Conditional
General exclusion 1(f) excludes any claim relating to pregnancy or childbirth where, at the start of or during the trip, the pregnancy had lasted more than 26 weeks. Cancellation cover under Section A likewise excludes pregnancy/childbirth where the pregnancy had reached at least 26 weeks (22 weeks for a known multiple pregnancy) at the start of the trip, unless the pregnancy was confirmed after the ticket/booking or policy effective date and cancellation is medically necessary.
Personal liability abroad
CZK 1,000,000 – CZK 10,000,000
Covers legal liability for accidental bodily injury to third parties, damage to property not owned/held by the insured, and damage to temporary accommodation, incurred during the trip. Bronze: 1,000,000 CZK; Silver: 5,000,000 CZK; Gold: 10,000,000 CZK. Does not cover liability for use of motor vehicles (separate MTPL required).
Legal expenses cover
CZK 60,000
Only in Gold
Covers legal representation costs for pursuing a claim for damages following death, illness or injury during the trip, up to 60,000 CZK in total for all insured persons. Available only on the Gold tier; not covered on Bronze or Silver.
24/7 assistance hotline
Covered
Travel Guard operates a Czech-language emergency medical assistance hotline available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year at +420 225 341 156, for all tiers.
Key conditions
Assistance call deadline
If hospitalization abroad is likely to last more than 24 hours, someone must contact Travel Guard immediately. For urgent medical care generally, Travel Guard should be contacted before or as soon as possible when treatment is needed, since this is not private health insurance and reimbursement cannot otherwise be guaranteed.
Unauthorized treatment
Failing to notify Travel Guard immediately in case of hospitalization exceeding 24 hours, or failing to get prior approval for an early return to the Czech Republic under the cancellation or medical-expenses sections, may result in a reduced benefit.
Purchase while abroad
Not explicitly addressed in the policy terms. The policy requires that the insured trip start and end in the Czech Republic and that the insured has permanent residence there, implying the policy is intended to be arranged before departure from the Czech Republic.
Chronic conditions
The definition of 'Illness' excludes conditions that were apparent, or for which medical advice or treatment was recommended, sought, or should have been sought, before the start of the trip, effectively excluding ongoing/chronic conditions known before travel.
Pregnancy
Medical and cancellation cover exclude pregnancy/childbirth once the pregnancy has reached more than 26 weeks (22 weeks for a known multiple pregnancy) at the start of or during the trip, unless the pregnancy was confirmed after booking/policy effective date and cancellation is medically necessary.
Pre-existing condition exclusions
General exclusion 1(a) excludes claims relating to a health condition or illness known to the insured or another person before this insurance was taken out; travelling against medical advice or to seek medical consultation/treatment, being on a hospital waiting list, or having received a terminal diagnosis are also excluded.
Coverage duration limit
Single-trip insurance covers one trip of up to 90 days (minimum 1 day) and is unavailable to anyone who reaches age 79 at the start of the trip. Annual multi-trip insurance covers unlimited trips during the policy period but excludes any single trip longer than 31 days, and is unavailable to anyone over 68 at the start of the policy (limit age 69). Eligibility also requires permanent residence in the Czech Republic and no more than 6 months spent abroad in the preceding year; minors are covered only when travelling with an insured adult.
