Direct payment

For hospital and outpatient treatment abroad, the insurer's foreign partner settles the costs directly on the insured's behalf via the assistance centre (Europ Assistance). If the insured is required to pay in cash, the insurer reimburses these costs only if the amount was pre-approved by the assistance centre; this pre-approval condition does not apply to total treatment costs up to 5,000 CZK, which are reimbursed directly.

Geographic scope

Europe, Worldwide, or Czech Republic (three selectable territorial scopes)

Three territorial scopes are available: Czech Republic; Europe (all European countries except the Czech Republic, plus Algeria, Armenia, Azerbaijan, Egypt, Georgia, Israel, Jordan, Lebanon, Libya, Morocco and Tunisia); or World (all countries except the Czech Republic). Medical expenses insurance is not offered under the Czech Republic territorial scope. Coverage does not apply in Belarus, the Donetsk, Kherson, Luhansk and Zaporizhzhia regions, the Russian Federation, Iran, North Korea, Crimea, Cuba and Venezuela (with a US nexus), and Syria, unless agreed otherwise in the policy.

Unique selling points

  • Online purchase unlocks an additional 20% discount on top of already reduced rates.
  • Base rates for selected European destinations have been cut by up to 43%.
  • Children under 6 travel insured free of charge, and minors up to 17 receive a 50% discount.
  • The deductible on damage accidentally caused to a borrowed vehicle abroad is covered as standard.

Key conditions

Assistance call deadline

In case of an accident, sudden illness, hospitalization or trip interruption occurring outside the Czech Republic, the assistance centre (or, for other claim types, the insurer) must be contacted without undue delay after becoming aware of the event.

Unauthorized treatment

Costs of advanced examinations (e.g. CT, ultrasound, endoscopy, non-acute surgery) recommended by a doctor but not pre-approved by the insurer or assistance centre are excluded, as are costs of repatriation organized by the insured or others without the assistance centre's prior approval.

Purchase while abroad

Insurance can also be concluded during an already-started trip, provided the policyholder did not know and could not have known that an insured event had already occurred or would occur. If the new policy does not immediately follow a previous Generali travel policy, a 3-day waiting period from the conclusion date applies, during which no claims are covered.

Chronic conditions

Treatment of chronic illnesses is excluded from cover.

Pregnancy

Pregnancy-related complications are covered under medical expenses up to the 26th week; pregnancy testing, interruption, complications after the 26th week, and childbirth are excluded. For trip cancellation/interruption, serious pregnancy complications up to the 26th week requiring hospitalization or bed rest are an insured event.

Pre-existing condition exclusions

Illnesses or injuries whose cause existed prior to the start of the insurance, including chronic conditions, are excluded from cover.

Coverage duration limit

A policy can be concluded for a maximum period of one year; an annual policy with repeated trips outside the Czech Republic is also available, with the maximum length of a single trip specified in the policy contract.
