Pojišťovna VZP, a.s.
PVZP
PVZP is a travel insurance for the Czech Republic market with online purchase and 24/7 assistance.
Direct payment
The insurer pays necessary medical costs either directly, or through its assistance provider, to the healthcare facility or other party that actually incurred them. If the insured pays the costs directly themselves, the insurer reimburses the reasonable, proven costs after receiving the original supporting documents; these originals are retained by the insurer and are not returned (Section B, Art. 4(2)-(3)).
Geographic scope
Insured selects one of two territorial zones at inception: Zone E (all European states, the European part of Russia up to the 60°E meridian, Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya, Turkey, Israel, Jordan, Cyprus) or Zone S (all states worldwide).
Medical expenses cover explicitly does not apply on the territory of the Czech Republic, nor in any state where the insured participates in the public health insurance system there (Section B, Art. 2); the hospitalisation daily-benefit, veterinary and Asistence Plus covers likewise exclude events on Czech territory.
Unique selling points
- PVZP's travel insurance can preserve cover up to 1 per mille blood alcohol content (subject to local law), broader than the market-standard zero-tolerance approach, when the NADSTANDARD package's Pojištění vybraných výluk is agreed.
- Damage to borrowed or rented sports equipment (e.g. scooters, surfboards, paddleboards, diving gear) can be covered under the NADSTANDARD package, an item typically excluded from standard liability cover.
- The NADSTANDARD package can cover COVID-19/quarantine-related accommodation, meals, medicines and return-home costs if the insured is stranded abroad due to an ordered quarantine.
- Assistance is available around the clock via a dedicated multilingual AXA Assistance line, covering medical coordination, family contact and legal advice.
- More than one million people rely on PVZP's travel insurance every year, according to the insurer.
Coverage limits
Medical expenses
Covered
Covers necessary and reasonable costs of medical services provided abroad due to a sudden serious illness or accident (including a sudden change of a long-term stabilized chronic condition): diagnosis, standard treatment, necessary hospitalisation in a multi-bed room, surgery, medicines and medical devices, transport to the nearest first-aid facility, medically necessary repatriation, and emergency dental treatment. Included in MINI, STANDARD and NADSTANDARD. The exact CZK limit is set by the overall limit variant chosen in the pojistná smlouva (the policy documents reference variant labels only, not a stated monetary amount); the same limit applies to all agreed covers.
Acute and emergency medical treatment
Covered
Covers necessary examinations to establish diagnosis and treatment plan, and necessary standard treatment, as part of the medical expenses cover. Included in MINI, STANDARD and NADSTANDARD, subject to the same overall limit variant as medical_expenses.
Hospitalization
Covered
Necessary hospitalisation in a multi-bed standard room is covered as part of the medical expenses cover (included in MINI, STANDARD and NADSTANDARD). Separately, if the NADSTANDARD package's Section H (Pojištění pro případ hospitalizace) is agreed, the insurer additionally pays a fixed daily cash benefit for each day of hospitalisation abroad caused by an accident, serious illness, or pregnancy (excluding childbirth), for a maximum of 30 days per insured event; no benefit is paid for hospitalisation shorter than 24 hours, and this daily benefit does not apply to events occurring in the Czech Republic.
Outpatient treatment
Covered
Necessary outpatient examinations and standard treatment needed to establish diagnosis and treatment are covered as part of the medical expenses cover, in the same scope and packages as medical_expenses (MINI, STANDARD, NADSTANDARD).
Emergency dental treatment
Covered
Covers emergency dental treatment to remove sudden acute pain, excluding periodontal treatment, removal of plaque/tartar, and the making or repair of dentures, crowns, bridges, fixed dental replacements or orthodontic devices. This is a sub-limit (dílčí limit) carved out of the overall medical expenses limit; its specific CZK amount is not separately stated in the reviewed documents. Included in MINI, STANDARD and NADSTANDARD.
Medical transport
Covered
Covers medically necessary transport from the place where the insured event occurred to the nearest facility providing first medical aid or to hospital. Included in MINI, STANDARD and NADSTANDARD as part of the medical expenses cover.
Medical evacuation / repatriation
Covered
If medically necessary and approved by the insurer's medical reviewer with the treating physician's consent, the insurer arranges and pays for repatriation of the ill or injured insured to a healthcare facility in the Czech Republic (or their place of residence), including, where justified, the cost of a necessary escort. Included in MINI, STANDARD and NADSTANDARD.
Repatriation of mortal remains
Covered
Covers transport of the insured's remains to their place of residence in the Czech Republic, carried out by a specialised organisation approved by the insurer or its assistance provider, plus, where justified, further related costs after prior approval. Included in MINI, STANDARD and NADSTANDARD; the Asistence Plus cover additionally reimburses local funeral costs abroad or the return-trip costs of a fellow traveller/close person in case of death.
Mountain rescue service intervention
Optional
Mountain rescue costs (search, extraction, evacuation transport, and transport of remains) up to 5,000 m above sea level are covered under separate Section G (Pojištění zásahu horské záchranné služby). It is a base component of NADSTANDARD; for MINI and STANDARD it can be added as an optional (fakultativní) supplement. Under the medical expenses cover (Section B), search/rescue operations are excluded unless a genuine health-related insured event occurred first.
COVID-19 / quarantine-related costs
Conditional
Only in NADSTANDARD
The standard exclusion for costs arising from an ordered preventive quarantine/isolation (Section B, Art. 6(4)) is lifted only if Section Q (Pojištění vybraných výluk) is agreed, which is a base component of the NADSTANDARD package only. In that case, Section Q covers placement in a healthcare facility, accommodation at the place designated by a doctor or authority (including full-board meals), and the additional cost of returning home if the quarantine/isolation lasts beyond the originally planned return date, up to the medical expenses limit selected in the policy.
Pre-existing / chronic conditions
Conditional
Events whose cause was predictable or known before the policy start are generally excluded (Section A, Art. 5(2)). However, a 'long-term stabilized chronic condition' (stabilized for the preceding 6 months, requiring no hospitalisation and no change of treatment/medication, Section A, Art. 2(9)) is specifically defined, and a sudden change of such a condition is an insured medical event (Section B, Art. 3). Routine/expected exacerbations of a known unstable condition remain excluded.
Winter sports cover
Covered
Skiing, snowboarding and cross-country skiing on marked/designated pistes/trails are classified in the Seznam činností a sportů as activities requiring no supplement, i.e. included at no extra premium. Higher-risk winter disciplines differ: moguls, speed skiing, sledge/bobsleigh racing and snowmobile downhill require the paid 'Extrémní činnosti a sporty' supplement, while freeride skiing/snowboarding, ski touring/skialpinism and heliskiing are listed as uninsurable (nepojistitelné) and excluded regardless of any supplement.
Adventure / high-risk sports cover
Optional
Activities classified as 'Nebezpečné činnosti a sporty' (e.g. belayed rock climbing, mountain-bike downhill/single track) or 'Extrémní činnosti a sporty' (e.g. alpine downhill ski racing, canyoning, via ferrata grade D) require a paid supplementary cover selected at inception; work at height follows a graded system (no supplement under 5 m, 'nebezpečné' 5-10 m, 'extrémní' 10-30 m). The most extreme disciplines (e.g. alpinism, base jumping, cave diving, heliskiing, ice climbing) are listed as uninsurable (nepojistitelné) and cannot be covered at all.
Pregnancy complications
Conditional
Only in NADSTANDARD
Under the medical expenses cover (Section B, Art. 6(1)), childbirth (including premature birth and the puerperium), abortion, artificial insemination, fertility examination/treatment and pregnancy-monitoring examinations are explicitly excluded and never reimbursed as medical expenses. However, under the separate Section H (Pojištění pro případ hospitalizace, a base component of NADSTANDARD only), hospitalisation caused by pregnancy (excluding childbirth itself) is a named insured peril, paying the agreed daily cash benefit for up to 30 days.
Personal liability
Covered
Covers the insured's legal liability for bodily injury, property damage or harm to a live animal (and related consequential financial loss) caused to a third party in ordinary civil life abroad, up to the limit chosen in the policy, subject to a long list of exclusions (e.g. liability from gainful/professional activity, hunting, motor vehicles, borrowed/entrusted property other than accommodation-related items, environmental damage, product liability, damages awarded by US/Canadian courts). Included in MINI, STANDARD and NADSTANDARD; the exact CZK limit is set by the overall limit variant chosen in the policy, not stated as a specific figure in the reviewed T&Cs.
Legal defence assistance
Covered
As part of the liability cover, the insurer pays the costs necessary for the legal defence of the insured against a claim that both the insured and the insurer consider unfounded (Section E, Art. 4(7)). No separate limit is stated for this benefit beyond the overall liability limit.
24/7 assistance line
Covered
Assistance services related to the agreed covers are provided around the clock (24 hours a day) by the insurer's contracted assistance organisation, AXA Assistance CZ, s.r.o., reachable by phone (+420 272 10 10 10), SMS (+420 606 60 17 55), fax and e-mail (info.travel@axa-assistance.cz). Included in MINI, STANDARD and NADSTANDARD.
Key conditions
Assistance call deadline
The insured must contact the insurer's assistance provider without undue delay whenever their state of health allows, and follow its instructions (Section A, Art. 14(1)); no fixed number of hours is stated for this general duty. A specific 3-working-day deadline applies only to reporting delayed-baggage/delayed-transport claims (Section D, Part II, Art. 5(4)).
Unauthorized treatment
There is no separate monetary 'penalty' clause; instead, an event is excluded from the medical expenses cover if the insured refuses to undergo repatriation, treatment or medical examination directed by the physician designated by the insurer or its assistance provider (Section B, Art. 6(18)). More generally, breach of the insured's duties allows the insurer to reduce the benefit in proportion to the effect of that breach (Section A, Art. 4(12)).
Purchase while abroad
The documents define 'commencement of the trip' (nastoupení cesty) as the moment the insured boards a means of transport in the Czech Republic to reach their destination, implying the policy is designed to be arranged before departure from the Czech Republic; the reviewed sources do not separately address purchasing the policy while the insured is already abroad.
Chronic conditions
A 'long-term stabilized chronic condition' is defined as a condition existing before the policy start that has been stable for the preceding 6 months, required no hospitalisation and involved no change in treatment or medication (Section A, Art. 2(9)). A sudden change of such a condition is an insured medical event (Section B, Art. 3), but treatment of the underlying chronic disease itself, and conditions foreseeable/known at contracting, remain excluded (Section A, Art. 5(2)).
Pregnancy
Childbirth (including premature birth and the puerperium), abortion, artificial insemination, fertility examination/treatment and pregnancy-monitoring examinations/contraception are excluded from the medical expenses cover (Section B, Art. 6(1)). Separately, hospitalisation caused by pregnancy other than childbirth is an insured peril under the optional NADSTANDARD hospitalisation daily-benefit cover (Section H, Art. 3(c)).
Pre-existing condition exclusions
Section A, Art. 5(2) generally excludes events whose cause was predictable or known to the policyholder/insured when the contract was concluded. The specific carve-out for a 'long-term stabilized chronic condition' (see chronic_diseases) is the main exception allowing cover for a sudden acute change of an existing condition.
Coverage duration limit
A single-trip policy may run from 1 day up to 1 year. Alternatively, an annual 'repeated stay' (opakovaný pobyt) policy covers an unlimited number of trips during the policy year, provided no single continuous stay abroad exceeds 90 days (to be proven on request, e.g. via ticket or employer/school confirmation). If the insured cannot return to the Czech Republic independently of their will before the policy period ends, the period is automatically extended, without additional premium, for up to 7 days (Section A, Art. 9(2)).
