Direct payment

In case of hospitalization, SOS International's doctor can provide a guarantee or send payment directly to the hospital or treating physician; for outpatient treatment the insured pays and claims reimbursement afterwards.

Geographic scope

Worldwide, excluding travel within Denmark

Annual travel insurance is issued with coverage worldwide. Travel within Denmark is not covered by the insurance.

Unique selling points

  • Unlimited ("ubegrænset") coverage for acute illness/injury treatment and home transport, well above many market sub-limits.
  • Ski cover can be added with "no commitment or fees" (ingen binding eller gebyrer), unlike many insurers' rigid add-on terms.
  • 24-hour, 365-days-a-year emergency assistance through dedicated partner SOS International.
  • Covers the whole household including the policyholder's own accompanying children up to age 18, not just the individual traveller.
  • Holiday compensation (feriekompensation) of up to 100,000 DKK if illness, injury, hospitalisation or death prevents the insured from enjoying the trip.

Coverage limits

Acute illness/injury medical expenses

unlimited

Unlimited coverage (per the short coverage overview: "Sygdom/Hjemtransport Ubegrænset") for reasonable and necessary expenses for doctor treatment, prescribed medication, hospital stay, physiotherapy (capped at 15,000 DKK), taxi to treatment (capped), and ambulance transport in case of acute illness or injury during the trip.

Source

Hospitalization

Covers hospital stay in a semi-private (two-bed) room and doctor-prescribed hospital treatment, including operations, as part of the unlimited Sygdom sum for travel outside the EU; within the EU, ordinary (public) hospital stays and treatment including operations are covered.

Source

Outpatient treatment

unlimited

If SOS's doctor assesses that the insured can be treated on an outpatient basis instead of in hospital, the policy covers hotel stay and meals up to 2,000 DKK, as part of the unlimited Sygdom sum.

Source

Emergency dental treatment

DKK 3,000 – DKK 5,000

Covers own payment for authorised dentist treatment up to 3,000 DKK within the EU, and acute pain-relieving dental treatment up to 5,000 DKK outside the EU. Specialist treatment, crown and root canal work are excluded.

Source

Medical transport / home transport

unlimited

Source

Medical evacuation

unlimited

Medically necessary transport/evacuation to Denmark for treatment, arranged by SOS's doctor, covered under the unlimited Sygdom/Hjemtransport sum. Distinct from the separate 75,000 DKK political/natural-disaster "Evakuering" benefit.

Source

Repatriation of remains

unlimited

Covers either home transport to an undertaker/crematorium in Denmark in case of death, including mandatory measures such as embalming and a zinc coffin, or cremation/burial at the location if the next of kin prefer, capped at what a home transport would have cost.

Source

Search and rescue

DKK 100,000

Covers necessary expenses up to 100,000 DKK per insured for search and/or rescue; regardless of the number of policies/policyholders, the maximum aggregate payout for one event is capped at 300,000 DKK. Excludes search north of the 75th parallel or at the South Pole, and other listed exclusions.

COVID-19 treatment

Source

Pre-existing conditions

Conditional

Unstable chronic or pre-existing conditions, or recent illness/injury, are as a starting point not covered; the insured must apply for a medical pre-assessment via SOS International to determine if and how the policy covers the condition during the trip.

Key conditions

Assistance call deadline

Any situation that may give rise to a claim must be reported to ABC/SOS as soon as possible; SOS must always be contacted in case of hospitalization.

Unauthorized treatment

The policy does not cover treatment that has not been approved by SOS's doctor, or expenses arising from the insured not following the instructions of SOS's doctor.

Purchase while abroad

The annual travel insurance must be purchased and paid for before departure; it cannot be bought once the trip has begun.

Chronic conditions

Treatment of chronic or existing illnesses is excluded if the condition is unstable, if care/control visits have been missed within the last 2 months, or if there was a known treatment need or change in medication/hospitalisation within 2 months before departure.

Pregnancy

Pregnancy complications and birth are covered up to 4 weeks before the expected due date and for a maximum of 1 month of treatment; pregnancy tests, elective abortion, sterilisation and fertility investigations/treatment are excluded.

Pre-existing condition exclusions

Coverage for chronic/existing conditions that are not stable is excluded by default; the insured can apply for a medical pre-assessment (medicinsk forhåndstilsagn) via SOS to clarify whether and how the trip is covered.

Coverage duration limit

The annual policy is issued for one year at a time and covers trips of a maximum duration of 60 travel days; the trip period can, by agreement with ABC, be extended up to 24 months in total from the original departure date.
