COVID-19 Treatment

Conditional

COVID-19 is not explicitly mentioned in the policy terms. However, as an acutely arising illness, COVID-19 would in principle be covered under the illness and injury clause (section 5.1) if it arises acutely during the trip and the insured did not have known symptoms before departure. Coverage would be excluded if the Danish Ministry of Foreign Affairs advised against travel to the destination. Psychological crisis assistance explicitly excludes life-threatening epidemics for which a known vaccine exists.

Pre-existing Conditions

Conditional

The policy generally does not cover treatment for pre-existing or chronic conditions known before departure. However, coverage is extended for: (1) an acute worsening of an existing condition if the condition has been in a stable good phase for at least 2 months before departure (stable meaning no worsening requiring doctor contact or plans for further investigation, treatment, or hospitalisation); and (2) conditions for which If has granted a binding advance medical assessment (forhåndsvurdering). Policyholders with pre-existing conditions are strongly advised to obtain a pre-assessment before travel.

Winter Sports Coverage

Optional

The basic travel insurance does not cover any injuries occurring in connection with winter sports (skiing, snowboarding, sledging, ice skating, etc.). Winter sports coverage is an optional add-on (tilvalg) that must be explicitly selected at purchase and appear on the policy. When added, it extends all relevant policy sections to also cover winter sports injuries.

Adventure / Dangerous Sports Coverage

Conditional

The basic Rejse and Rejse Plus variants do not cover injuries sustained in connection with dangerous sports (farlig sport) as defined in the policy, including boxing, martial arts, bungee jumping, paragliding, parachuting, gliding, jet-ski, kitesurfing, diving with scuba equipment, motor racing, cycle racing, horse racing, and triathlon. Coverage for dangerous sports is only available under the Rejse Super variant. Expeditions and mountain climbing are excluded from all variants.

Pregnancy Complications

Covered

Covers treatment in connection with pregnancy and childbirth resulting from an acutely arising illness or injury. Also covers treatment of pregnancy and childbirth not arising from acute illness or injury up to 1 month before the expected date of birth, and treatment of a premature baby born more than 1 month before the expected birth date. Voluntary termination of pregnancy is explicitly excluded.

24/7 Travel Assistance

Covered

If's travel assistance (Ifs rejsehjælp) is available around the clock, anywhere in the world. If the insured becomes ill or injured, If can help find the best hospital in the area and arrange home transport to Denmark as soon as medically appropriate. International assistance and claims service can be provided directly at the holiday destination.

Key conditions

Assistance call deadline

In case of acute illness or injury requiring sick transport or home transport, the transport must be approved by If and arranged through If's travel assistance. For the summoning of companions (Tilkaldelse), this must be agreed with If. All transport arrangements that If must approve should be made before the transport takes place.

Unauthorized treatment

Expenses for treatment and stay abroad are not covered if the insured refuses to be transported home when If's doctor has decided that home transport is required and the treating doctor has approved this. Expenses for treatment and stay abroad are not covered if If's doctor has decided that treatment can wait until the insured returns to Denmark and the treating doctor has approved this.

Purchase while abroad

The policy must be purchased before departure from Denmark. Coverage begins when the insured leaves their home or place of residence in Denmark to start the trip and ends upon return to Denmark. It is a requirement that the travel insurance was purchased before the trip.

Chronic conditions

The travel insurance covers acutely arising illness and injuries. Treatment of chronic or pre-existing conditions is not covered. Coverage is available for an acute worsening of an existing condition if the condition has been in a stable good phase for at least 2 months before departure. Policyholders with chronic or existing conditions can request a binding advance assessment (forhåndsvurdering) from If before travel.

Pregnancy

Treatment in connection with pregnancy and childbirth arising from acutely occurring illness or injury is covered. Treatment of pregnancy and childbirth not caused by acute illness or injury is covered up to 1 month before the expected birth date. Treatment of a premature baby born more than 1 month before the expected birth date is covered. Voluntary termination of pregnancy is excluded.

pre_existing_conditions

Pre-existing conditions known before departure are generally not covered. Coverage may apply to an acute worsening of an existing condition if it has been in a stable good phase (no worsening requiring medical contact, no plans for further investigation or treatment) for at least 2 months before departure. For other pre-existing conditions, a binding advance medical assessment can be requested from If. Travelling without such an assessment when a pre-existing condition requires treatment means the insured risks having to bear the full cost themselves.

coverage_duration_limit

The Rejse (basic) variant covers private holiday and study trips of up to 30 days. Coverage begins when the insured leaves their home or place of residence in Denmark and ends upon return. If the planned trip exceeds 30 days, there is no coverage for damages occurring after the coverage period has expired. If a covered claim occurs within the coverage period and causes the trip to be extended beyond the coverage period, the coverage is automatically extended until the insured returns to Denmark. For trips within Denmark, a minimum of 1 overnight stay is required.
