Topdanmark
Topdanmark is a travel insurance for the DK market with online purchase and 24/7 assistance.
Direct payment
Topdanmark's 24/7 travel assistance service (Rejsehjælp) can arrange advance payment in acute situations covered by the policy. For non-acute claims, costs are typically paid out of pocket first and then reimbursed. Medical transport and hospitalization are coordinated and settled directly with providers by Rejsehjælp where possible. Calls to and from Rejsehjælp in connection with a covered claim are covered by the insurance.

Baggage left behind at evacuation: max DKK 22,323 (2023) per insured person.
SourceCOVID-19 treatment
Conditional
COVID-19 is not explicitly mentioned in the policy terms, but as an acute illness occurring during the trip it would fall under the general illness and injury coverage (clause 17.1) with no stated monetary limit. Coverage is conditional: pre-existing unstable chronic conditions are excluded unless pre-approved. Travel to destinations where the Danish authorities advise against travel is not covered.
SourcePre-existing and chronic conditions
Conditional
Pre-existing and chronic conditions are excluded by default. Coverage may be obtained through a prior medical assessment (forhåndsvurdering) before departure. Assessment may result in: (1) unconditional approval – covered on normal terms for acute worsening; (2) approval with clause – exceptions for known conditions, but all other acute illness and sudden injury covered; or (3) rejection – no coverage for any condition related to the known illness or injury. Worsening of a chronic or existing illness is not covered if the condition has not been in a stable good phase for 2 months before departure. The pre-approval is trip-specific and must be renewed for each trip.
SourceSki sport add-on
Optional
Ski and snowboard activities are excluded from base coverage. The optional 'Skisport' add-on extends the annual travel insurance to cover illness, injury, medical and home transport, physiotherapist/chiropractor/dental, sick escort, call-out of persons from Denmark, spoiled holiday days abroad, and transport of left-behind vehicle – all when the cause is directly or indirectly related to skiing or snowboarding. Baggage delay during a ski holiday: lump-sum option of DKK 7,435 (2023) for 5 days. Must be shown on the policy.
SourceAdventure and high-risk sports
Excluded
Mountain climbing (including rock and ice climbing regardless of altitude, and any activity using ropes, crampons or specialist equipment, or on mountains above 4,000m), expeditions to untouched or unknown areas (e.g. polar regions, unexplored rainforest), and parachute jumping are explicitly excluded from coverage. Professional sport (where sport is the insured's main occupation) is also excluded. Skiing and snowboarding are excluded from base coverage but can be added as an optional add-on.
SourcePregnancy complications and premature birth
Covered
Covers treatment of illness arising from pregnancy during the trip, and delivery more than 4 weeks before the expected due date (premature birth). Treatment of the prematurely born baby is also covered if born more than 4 weeks before the expected due date. Normal delivery within the last 4 weeks before the expected due date is not covered. Medical transport/home transport is covered for pregnancy-related acute illness. No separate monetary limit stated beyond the general medical expenses unlimited coverage.
SourceLiability for damage to rented holiday accommodation
Covered
Covers the insured's personal liability for damage to contents or structure of a rented holiday accommodation when the damaged parts are in the insured's custody. Maximum DKK 3,000,000 per loss event (not index-regulated). The insured must leave it to Topdanmark to determine liability. Self-acknowledgement of liability by the insured is not binding on Topdanmark. Does not cover liability arising from motor vehicles, professional activities, animals, or items listed under general exclusions.
SourceBail and legal costs
Covered
Covers bail and legal costs if the insured or their baggage is detained by local authorities. Maximum DKK 148,826 (2023) per insured person. Bail must be repaid to Topdanmark if released, and also if not released due to the insured's own failure to pay a fine, not appearing in court, or otherwise being responsible for non-release. Does not cover detention related to professional/employment/contractual matters or criminal cases (except traffic offences).
Source24/7 travel assistance (Rejsehjælp)
Covered
The insurance provides access to a 24/7 travel assistance centre (Rejsehjælp) reachable at +45 44 74 50 00. Rejsehjælp can communicate with foreign doctors and hospitals, help book hotels or flights home, arrange advance emergency payments for covered claims, coordinate medical transport and repatriation, and provide assistance in emergency situations. Calls to and from Rejsehjælp in connection with a covered claim are covered by the insurance. The insured is obliged to follow Rejsehjælp's instructions.
SourceKey conditions
Assistance call deadline
In the event of a claim, Rejsehjælp or Topdanmark must be notified as soon as possible. For acute assistance abroad, Rejsehjælp is available 24/7. The insured must follow Rejsehjælp's instructions and provide all information required. Sick and home transport must be agreed with Rejsehjælp before it takes place. Physiotherapist, chiropractor and dental treatment must also be agreed with Rejsehjælp.
Unauthorized treatment
Expenses for treatment and stay abroad are not covered if Rejsehjælp's doctor has assessed – and the treating doctor has agreed – that treatment can wait until the insured returns home to Denmark. If the insured refuses to be transported home when Rejsehjælp's doctor has assessed and the treating doctor has approved that transport is possible, continued hospital treatment and stay are not covered. If the insured does not follow the instructions of Rejsehjælp's doctor or treating doctor, the related costs are not covered.
Purchase while abroad
The annual travel insurance must have come into force before the insured departs from Denmark. It is not possible to purchase the insurance while already abroad and have it take effect immediately for an ongoing trip.
Chronic conditions
Chronic or existing illnesses are not covered by default. A medical pre-assessment (forhåndsvurdering) must be applied for before departure if the insured has a chronic or existing condition that within the past 2 months has led to: hospitalisation, change of medication, doctor visits beyond routine check-ups, referral for further investigation, deterioration without seeking medical help, missed control visit, cessation of treatment, or known need for treatment before booking. The pre-assessment is trip-specific and must be renewed for each trip. Routine control treatment and medication to keep a chronic condition stable are not covered even with pre-approval.
Pregnancy
Treatment of illness related to pregnancy is covered. Delivery more than 4 weeks before the expected due date (premature birth) is covered, and treatment of the prematurely born baby is also covered. Normal delivery within the last 4 weeks before the expected due date is explicitly not covered. Sick and home transport is covered for pregnancy-related acute illness agreed with Rejsehjælp.
pre_existing_conditions
Pre-existing conditions are excluded unless a prior medical assessment (forhåndsvurdering) is obtained before the trip. The assessment is performed by medically trained staff based on medical records obtained by the insured from their doctor or hospital (at the insured's own cost). The assessment may result in full coverage on normal terms, coverage with a clause (exceptions for known conditions), or a rejection. A positive pre-assessment does not guarantee full coverage – it only clarifies the insurance coverage. The assessment applies only to the specific trip for which it was sought.
coverage_duration_limit
The annual travel insurance covers trips of up to 60 consecutive days per trip. If a trip exceeds 60 days, the annual insurance must be supplemented with a single-trip insurance for the additional days. If a covered claim causes the trip to be extended beyond 60 days, the insurance is automatically extended. Coverage begins when the insured leaves their private residence or place of stay in Denmark and ends upon return.
