Direct payment

Medical treatment abroad is coordinated through SOS International's 24/7 assistance service, which pre-approves hospitalisation and transport decisions; the reviewed policy documents do not describe a specific cashless/direct-billing arrangement with foreign hospitals beyond this coordination role.

Geographic scope

Designed for Danish residents; the policyholder and household must be registered at a Danish address and covered by the Danish public health insurance scheme.

Standard tier (Rejseforsikring Europa) covers the EU (except Denmark), the EEA (Norway, Iceland, Liechtenstein), Switzerland and the United Kingdom, matching the area covered by the blue EU health insurance card. The Udvidet Rejseforsikring/Verden tier extends cover worldwide, including limited cover for holidays within Denmark (rented accommodation, minimum 5 nights).

Unique selling points

  • The extended worldwide travel insurance tier (Udvidet Rejseforsikring) is available for a fixed 60-day price rather than a complex tariff structure.
  • Customers aged 60 or over receive a 10% discount on the extended travel insurance.
  • Travel insurance is included automatically and at no extra cost with Vejle Brand's home contents insurance (indbo-/familieforsikring) for existing policies.
  • Policyholders have round-the-clock access to SOS International's dedicated emergency alarm centre for medical assistance and claims reporting anywhere in the world.
  • As a customer-owned mutual insurer (gensidigt selskab), Vejle Brand positions its pricing around member value rather than shareholder profit.

Source

Hospitalisation abroad

DKK 10,000,000

Reasonable and necessary acute pain-relieving dental treatment that cannot wait until return to Denmark is covered up to DKK 7,700 (2026 kroner) per person; a lower sub-limit of DKK 1,000 (not indexed) applies specifically for chewing-related tooth damage. Specialist treatment (e.g. crown or root canal) requires prior approval from SOS International (§19.7, §19.9).

Source

Medical transport

DKK 10,000,000

Ambulance transport from the site of illness/injury to the treatment location, and onward transport to and from the nearest suitable treatment site, are covered within the shared DKK 10,000,000 aggregate for treatment and homeward transport (§8.22-8.23).

Evacuation and involuntary stay

DKK 77,000

Covers evacuation and/or extra costs of returning to Denmark, plus costs of an involuntary stay, when the Danish Foreign Ministry recommends/requires evacuation due to imminent danger from natural disasters, terrorism, war-like conditions or life-threatening epidemics, or if the insured is directly caught in a terrorist act or forcibly detained by local authorities. Capped at DKK 77,000 (2026 kroner) in total for the whole household (§17.1-17.5, §17.15); separate from the general treatment/transport aggregate and from search and rescue.

Source

Repatriation of remains

Source

Search and rescue

DKK 154,000

Necessary costs of searching for the insured (up to 14 days, within a 50 km radius of the last known location) and rescuing/collecting them once located, when reported missing for at least 24 hours and other conditions are met. Capped at DKK 154,000 (2026 kroner) per insured person, max DKK 463,000 (2026 kroner) per event, subject to a 10% deductible (minimum DKK 3,850) (§16.1-16.14).

COVID-19 treatment

No limit stated

No dedicated COVID-19 treatment benefit is described in the reviewed terms; general acute-illness treatment cover and the epidemic-triggered evacuation benefit (§17.3) may apply, but a specific COVID-19 provision is not stated.

Pre-existing conditions

Conditional

Treatment of chronic or pre-existing illness is excluded if, within the two months before departure, it led to hospitalisation, medical assessment/treatment or a medication change, unless a medical pre-approval was obtained from SOS International beforehand; the condition must also have been stable for the last two months before departure (§7.6, §7.9, §8.3-8.4).

Winter/sports holiday cover

Conditional

Only in Udvidet Rejseforsikring/Verden

Ordinary injury sustained while doing recreational winter/other sports is covered as normal medical treatment under both tiers. However, the specific benefit compensating for a sports holiday (e.g. ski or golf trip) that cannot be completed due to acute illness or injury (§12.5, §13.6) is only available if the Udvidet Rejseforsikring/Verden tier has been purchased; the travel document must clearly state the holiday's main purpose is a sports activity.

Adventure/extreme sports cover

Excluded

Damage that is a direct or indirect consequence of the insured's participation in mountaineering (including climbing above 4,000m or use of ropes/crampons), expeditions to unspoiled/uncharted areas, big-game hunting, cave exploration, or parachute jumping is excluded under both tiers (§6.3.2-6.3.4).

Pregnancy complications and premature birth

Covered

Covers childbirth up to four weeks before the expected due date and treatment of a prematurely born baby; treatment related to pregnancy/birth is covered up to one month before the expected due date, with treatment of babies born more than one month early also covered. Legal assistance

No limit stated

No indemnity cover for legal fees or attorney costs is described. The policy offers a related but distinct benefit (Sikkerhedsstillelse, §22) which is an interest-free, repayable loan to secure release from detention, not indemnity for legal expenses.

24/7 emergency assistance

Covered

SOS International's emergency alarm centre (+45 70 10 50 50) can be contacted around the clock for advice and claims reporting in case of illness or injury; a separate pre-travel service line (+45 38 48 82 50, weekdays 09:00-11:00 and 13:00-15:00) handles medical pre-approval requests for chronic/existing conditions before departure.

Key conditions

Assistance call deadline

Before receiving treatment abroad for an unstable chronic or pre-existing condition, or if hospitalised, examined/treated by a doctor, or had medication changed within the 2 months before departure, the insured must contact SOS International's pre-travel service (+45 38 48 82 50) to obtain prior medical approval, valid only for that specific trip. During the trip, SOS International's 24/7 line (+45 70 10 50 50) must be contacted for advice and claims reporting.

Unauthorized treatment

Transport not approved by SOS International is not covered, and expenses arising from the insured refusing or not following instructions from the company's doctor, the treating doctor, or the blue EU health card doctor are excluded. Costs are also excluded if the insured proceeds with treatment abroad after SOS's doctor assessed it could wait until return home, or refuses ordered repatriation.

Purchase while abroad

The reviewed policy terms, IPID and product page do not address purchasing this travel insurance after departure or while already abroad; cover is described as starting when the insured leaves home in Denmark to begin the trip.

Chronic conditions

Treatment of chronic or existing illness is excluded if it led to hospitalisation, doctor assessment/treatment, or a medication change within the 2 months before departure, unless pre-approved by SOS International; also excluded if the insured had not sought needed treatment, was on a waiting list, or missed check-ups within the last 6 months.

Pregnancy

Childbirth is covered up to four weeks before the expected due date, and treatment of a prematurely born baby is covered; pregnancy/birth-related treatment is covered up to one month before the expected due date, and treatment of babies born more than one month early is also covered.

Pre-existing condition exclusions

Pre-existing or chronic conditions are excluded from cover unless the condition has been stable for the two months before departure and, where required, a medical pre-approval has been obtained from SOS International for that specific trip.

Coverage duration limit

Standard cover (Rejseforsikring Europa) applies to private holiday trips abroad of up to 30 days. Under Udvidet Rejseforsikring/Verden, private holiday trips of up to 60 days and study trips abroad of up to 60 days are covered, and limited cover applies to holidays within Denmark in rented accommodation for a minimum of 5 nights.
