Territorial scope | Coverage is valid in the Republic of Estonia and all Contracting States of the European Economic Area (EU member states, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway), the Swiss Confederation, and other countries listed on the Green Card. For travel within the EEA or Switzerland, the standard MTPL policy suffices; a Green Card is required for travel outside the EEA. | ERGO MTPL insurance is valid in all EEA member states and Switzerland automatically, without any separate agreement. Coverage also extends to third countries participating in the Green Card system when a Green Card (issued free of charge on request) is presented. Coverage in a third country applies only if that country is listed on the policy or on the Green Card. The applicable law for claims is that of the country where the accident occurred. | The MTPL policy is valid in all EEA member states and Switzerland without any additional documentation. For driving in Green Card system countries outside the EU/EEA (e.g. Albania, Azerbaijan, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Israel, Iran, North Macedonia, Morocco, Moldova, Montenegro, Serbia, Tunisia, Turkey, Ukraine), the Green Card certificate must be carried. Russia and Belarus have been excluded from Gjensidige Green Card coverage since 12.04.2022. Claims are governed by the law of the country where the accident occurred. | Coverage is valid in Estonia, all European Economic Area member states, and in non-EEA countries listed on the green card: Albania, Andorra, Azerbaijan, Bosnia and Herzegovina, North Macedonia, Morocco, Moldova, Montenegro, United Kingdom, Serbia, Tunisia, Turkey, and Ukraine. Green cards for Russia and Belarus are no longer issued from 1 April 2023 and coverage there is not available. |
Green card rules | The Green Card is issued free of charge for the duration of the policy validity. It is required when traveling to countries outside the European Economic Area including Ukraine, United Kingdom, Albania, Andorra, Azerbaijan, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Israel, North Macedonia, Morocco, Moldova, Montenegro, Serbia, Tunisia, and Turkey. As of 1 June 2023, Green Cards issued for Estonian vehicles are no longer valid in Russia and Belarus; specific border insurance must be purchased instead. | The Green Card (roheline kaart) is a document certifying MTPL coverage validity beyond Estonia and the EEA/Switzerland. It is issued free of charge by ERGO upon policyholder request and becomes valid from the day following the request until the end of the policy period. It is mandatory for travel to non-EEA Green Card system member countries such as Albania, Andorra, Bulgaria, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Belarus, Croatia, Israel, Iran, Morocco, Moldova, North Macedonia, Romania, Serbia and Montenegro, Tunisia, Turkey, Ukraine, and Russia. EU/EEA member state travellers are advised to carry the Green Card as a practical proof of insurance even though it is not legally required. | Gjensidige issues the Green Card as an electronic PDF document that can be printed on standard white A4 paper. When driving outside Estonia, it is recommended to always carry the Green Card to prove coverage in the listed countries and avoid misunderstandings with local traffic police. Russia and Belarus are crossed out on all Green Cards issued from 12.04.2022 onward. Green Cards issued before 12.04.2022 remain valid in all countries listed on their printout. | The green card (international insurance certificate) proves valid MTPL coverage abroad. Within the EEA, the standard policy document or digital confirmation suffices. Outside the EEA, the green card must be carried physically. It can be ordered via the If self-service portal or by calling +372 777 1211. UK travel requires a green card from 1 January 2021 onwards; an additional premium may apply for UK coverage (not applied in Estonia). |
Driver restrictions | Any person driving the vehicle listed on the policy may be covered. However, if the policy specifies the vehicle's use as a standard passenger vehicle, the vehicle may not be used for activities requiring special conditions such as courier, taxi, or rental services. Usage outside the specified scope may result in a recourse claim by the insurer against the at-fault party. | There are no named-driver restrictions under Estonian MTPL law; any person lawfully driving the insured vehicle is covered as the at-fault party's insurer. However, the insurer has the right to seek subrogation (tagasinõue) against the driver or policyholder in cases defined by law, including: driving under the influence of alcohol, narcotics or psychotropic substances; intentional causing of the insured event; leaving the scene of the accident unlawfully; driving without a valid licence for the vehicle category; or driving a vehicle whose possession was unlawful. Additional coverages (Põdrakasko, driver accident insurance, ERGO Autoabi) may be denied if the vehicle was used for prohibited purposes (taxi, courier, ride-sharing, short-term rental, driving instruction, alarm vehicle) or if the driver committed certain violations (e.g. exceeding speed limit by 41 km/h or more, ignoring a stop signal from a traffic officer). | There are no specific named-driver restrictions under Estonian MTPL law; the policy covers the liability of the vehicle's registered responsible user (vastutav kasutaja) or owner. The insurer takes into account the claims history and risk factors of the policyholder/responsible user and vehicle when setting the premium. | There are no named-driver restrictions under statutory Estonian MTPL. Any person driving the vehicle with the owner's or authorised user's permission is covered. However, the insurer has a right of recourse against the at-fault driver if the damage was caused intentionally or if the driver was under the influence of alcohol, narcotics, or other substances. |
Claim notification deadline | The insurer must be notified of a traffic accident immediately (without delay). The at-fault party must submit the coordinated accident statement to the insurer within five days. For direct compensation claims submitted to the policyholder's own insurer, the claim must be submitted within 30 days of the damage occurring and the indemnity must not exceed 10,000 EUR. | The policyholder must notify ERGO of an insured event immediately (viivitamata) and follow the insurer's instructions. The at-fault party must notify their insurer within 5 working days of the accident, submit a written statement and make the vehicle available for inspection. The insurer must inspect a damaged vehicle within 7 days of notification of the accident. The damaged vehicle and property must be preserved in their post-accident condition for at least 7 days after notification (or up to 15 days if the insurer requests in writing). The insurer must make a compensation decision as soon as sufficient information is available, but no later than 30 days after the claim is submitted. | The policyholder must notify Gjensidige of an accident or insured event as soon as possible. The Estonian Motor Insurance Fund also sends notifications when a policy is about to expire (if not renewed 2 days before the new period start). Claims may be submitted to Gjensidige's vehicle claims line (Autoabi24) at +372 655 5667. | The insurer must be notified of a traffic accident without delay and its instructions followed. When the injured party is claiming from their own insurer (direct settlement), the accident must be reported within 30 days of the insured event. The damaged vehicle and other property must be preserved in their post-accident condition until the insurer's instructions are received. |
Bonus malus rules | Premiums are calculated based on the insurance and claims history of the vehicle owner or responsible user, alongside vehicle technical specifications, usage, and population register data. Premiums typically increase in the year following an insurance claim. Conversely, premiums may decrease if no claims were made during the previous period. The motor insurance history is visible to all participants in the Estonian insurance market, so claims made with one insurer can affect premiums with another insurer. | The MTPL premium is calculated based on a risk group (riskigrupp) system established by Estonian law (regulation on policyholder risk group calculation). Risk groups range from 040 to 300, with a first-time policyholder assigned group 120 by default. The risk group is determined annually based on the policyholder's claims history (paid claims) and active insurance days for the specific vehicle during the reference period (from 1 October of the year before last to 30 September of the preceding year), using data from the Estonian Motor Insurance Fund (LKF) database. In addition to the statutory risk group, each insurer may apply its own additional pricing factors. A 10% online discount is available when purchasing through ERGO e-office (ekontor.ergo.ee). Foreign claims history can be taken into account if a claims certificate from the respective national registry is provided. | Premium is determined by the insurer based on the claims history and risk factors of the policyholder/responsible user and vehicle, as well as other risk-relevant factors. The Estonian MTPL market uses bonus-malus systems where accident-free years reduce and at-fault claims increase the premium coefficient. Gjensidige applies its own internal risk-based pricing model per contract. | The premium is calculated based on the vehicle owner's or authorised user's claim history. Claim-free years abroad (in another country) are also taken into account if a foreign claim-history certificate is provided. Driving under someone else's name (e.g. registering a young driver's car under a parent's name) affects the parent's bonus-malus class if the young driver causes a claim. |

Direct payment policy | From 1 January 2015, the injured party of a traffic accident may turn to their own insurer for direct compensation. BTA can compensate directly if the claim is submitted within 30 days, no personal injury occurred, the place of use is Estonia, the indemnity does not exceed 10,000 EUR, and the circumstances and liability are clear. | ERGO does not apply a deductible (omavastutus) to MTPL claims; the insurer pays compensation to the injured party without deducting any excess from the policyholder. Subrogation (tagasinõue) may be applied against the at-fault party in cases defined by law (e.g. intentional damage, drink-driving, fleeing the scene). | Damage compensation is paid directly to the injured third party (victim) by Gjensidige on behalf of the at-fault policyholder. For accidents in Estonia where only vehicles are damaged, the insured amount is up to EUR 10,000 and both vehicles are Estonian-registered, the victim may submit the claim to their own insurer. | Insurer compensates the injured third party directly; recourse against the at-fault driver applies in cases of intentional damage or driving under the influence. Since 2015, the injured party may handle the claim with their own insurer if only vehicles were damaged and both vehicles are registered in Estonia. |
