Covers sudden and unexpected deterioration of health during travel that endangers life or health, with symptoms first appearing during the trip and requiring emergency medical care. Covers outpatient and inpatient treatment costs within 30 days of the insured event, urgent surgical operations, prescription medication, reasonable transport to receive medical care, and other related costs. The insured sum is set on the policy.

Emergency medical treatment

Covered

Emergency medical treatment (vältimatu arstiabi) is defined as assistance provided to prevent further deterioration of the insured's health condition. Covers outpatient and inpatient emergency treatment, urgent surgical operations, and prescription medications prescribed by a doctor. The total limit is set on the policy.

Inpatient hospital treatment costs incurred abroad as a result of an insured event are covered within 30 days of the event. Prior coordination with Gjensidige's claims partner is required for hospitalization; Gjensidige covers hospitalisation costs only if pre-approved by its claims handling partner.

Medical transport

Covered

Covers reasonable transport costs to reach medical care abroad, transport of a seriously injured or ill insured person back to Estonia, and (for a companion remaining with the seriously ill insured) additional transport in tourist class plus up to 7 days accommodation abroad at up to EUR 100 per day — subject to prior approval by Gjensidige.

Medical evacuation to Estonia

Gjensidige or its authorized medical representative organizes transport of a seriously ill or injured insured back to Estonia, taking into account the insured's health condition. Evacuation is organized and costs are covered only if pre-approved by the claims handling partner. If the insured refuses repatriation, Gjensidige may decline to cover subsequent costs.

Repatriation of remains

Covered

Covers transport costs of the insured's body or ashes to Estonia, as well as coffin and funeral costs abroad (including cremation), excluding the funeral reception and travel costs of those attending the funeral. Must be pre-coordinated with Gjensidige's claims handling partner.

COVID-19 illness treatment

For policies concluded from 07.02.2023 onwards with the COVID-19 clause, Gjensidige covers medical treatment costs abroad related to COVID-19 illness and medical transport to Estonia. COVID-19 quarantine, isolation, or test costs are not covered. The standard medical assistance conditions (RK101-2019) apply.

Pre-existing / chronic disease acute exacerbation first aid

In the event of an acute exacerbation of a chronic disease (sudden appearance or worsening of symptoms characteristic of a chronic disease requiring emergency medical care), Gjensidige covers first aid costs up to EUR 1,500. Planned medical treatment related to known conditions is excluded. If the insured was aware before travel that they would likely need medical care, no coverage applies.

Winter sports cover (hazardous hobby add-on)

Snowboarding and alpine skiing on marked runs in a winter sports centre are covered as a hazardous hobby (ohtlik harrastus), but only if this activity is noted on the policy. Coverage applies under the medical assistance and accident insurance sections. The trip purpose must not be competitive sports or training.

Coverage for hazardous hobbies (ohtlik harrastus, e.g. surfing, ATV safaris, organized mountain hiking up to 3,500m, team sports), competitive sports (võistlussport), and extreme sports (ekstreemsport, e.g. mountaineering, skydiving, motorsport, combat sports) is available as an optional add-on noted on the policy. Each category requires explicit notation on the policy and, for competitive/extreme sports, the specific sport discipline must also be noted.

Pregnancy complications emergency care

Gjensidige provides 24/7 telephone assistance through its Reisiabi24 service and its claims handling partner APRIL LIETUVA ASSISTANCE UAB. In the event of a health emergency abroad, the insured must contact the assistance partner listed on the policy. Gjensidige can issue a guarantee letter to the medical facility on behalf of the insured.

Key conditions

Assistance call deadline

In the event of a health emergency, the insured must immediately seek medical care and present the insurance policy (showing the contact details of assistance partner APRIL LIETUVA ASSISTANCE UAB) to the medical facility. If hospitalization is needed, the insured must contact Gjensidige's claims handling partner before admission. Hospitalization costs are reimbursed only if pre-approved.

Unauthorized treatment

Hospital treatment costs incurred without prior approval from Gjensidige's claims handling partner are not reimbursed. If the insured refuses medically organized repatriation, Gjensidige may decline to cover subsequent costs. All transport of remains and burial arrangements abroad must also be pre-approved with the claims handling partner.

Purchase while abroad

If the insured has already departed from Estonia at the time of concluding the insurance contract, the contract can only be concluded by special agreement with Gjensidige. Standard online purchase requires the trip to not yet have started.

Chronic conditions

Chronic disease acute exacerbation first aid is covered up to EUR 1,500 per insured event (clause 2.1.2.3). Planned treatment of known chronic conditions is excluded. If the insured knew or could reasonably foresee before travel that they would likely need medical care, no coverage applies for related costs.

Pregnancy

Emergency medical care costs due to unexpected pregnancy complications before the 32nd week of pregnancy are covered up to EUR 1,500 (clause 2.1.2.9). Childbirth, abortion, artificial insemination, fertility treatment, and contraception, as well as their complications, are explicitly excluded (clause 3.7).

pre_existing_conditions

Pre-existing conditions are generally excluded: if the insured was aware before travel or could reasonably foresee that they would likely need medical care, no reimbursement is made. By exception, an acute exacerbation of a chronic disease requiring emergency medical care is covered up to EUR 1,500 first aid only. Planned medical services (including cosmetic operations) are not covered.

coverage_duration_limit

The insurance period may not be shorter than the duration of the trip, except by special agreement with Gjensidige. For annual multi-trip (korduvreisikindlustus) policies, coverage for each individual trip is valid for a maximum of 45 consecutive days. For open travel days (avatud reisipäevade) policies for legal entities, the maximum number of travel days per period is stated on the policy. If return to Estonia is delayed due to a travel disruption insured event, the insurance period is extended by 48 hours.
