Direct payment

The claimant must generally pay medical costs themselves and later claim reimbursement from Turva against original invoices or receipts; in destinations handled by the travel emergency service the insured must give Turva a Kela authorization so that the statutory health insurance reimbursement share can also be claimed

Geographic scope

Worldwide on trips starting from Finland; domestic trips are covered when the destination is more than 50 km from home, workplace, place of study or holiday home

Not valid in uninhabited areas outside the Nordic countries (desert, jungle, wilderness, glacier) when more than a day's walk from permanent settlement and road connections; Greenland, islands of the Arctic Ocean and Svalbard are not counted as part of the Nordic countries for this purpose

Unique selling points

  • Can be issued to insureds aged 0-99, a wider age range than several competing fixed-term products capped around 79-85.
  • Trade union members receive a 10% union discount and owner-customers an additional 10% discount, and these can be combined.
  • Children and grandchildren under 18 travelling with an insured parent or grandparent are automatically covered by the traveler's medical insurance without needing a separate policy.
  • The policy can be priced and purchased instantly online with strong bank/mobile authentication.
  • The TaskuTurva mobile app gives digital insurance cards, the nearest partner care facility, and an easy claims-filing channel.

Coverage limits

Medical expenses

Covered

The T&C sets no euro ceiling on reasonable medical costs for a covered travel illness or travel accident; medical costs from a travel illness are reimbursed for at most 120 days from the start of treatment, and from a travel accident for at most three years from the accident, subject to sub-limits on specific items (e.g. dental, phone calls, glasses).

Source

Emergency medical treatment

Covered

Reasonable costs of examinations, treatments and procedures by a doctor, dentist or other authorised healthcare professional are covered without a stated euro ceiling; medically necessary and reasonable travel costs to treatment at the destination are also reimbursed.

Source

Hospitalization

Covered

Hospital daily charges (sairaalan hoitopäivämaksut) are reimbursed as part of medical costs, with no separate euro ceiling stated in the T&C.

Source

Outpatient treatment

Covered

Outpatient examinations, treatments and medicines purchased on prescription are reimbursed as part of medical costs without a stated euro ceiling.

Source

Emergency dental treatment

€120

Dental injury directly caused by a travel accident is covered under normal medical-cost rules, but treatment given abroad is reimbursed only as necessary first-aid treatment. Sudden toothache or a bite-related dental injury occurring on the trip is separately capped at a combined total of 120 euros including travel costs, and treatment must be received during the trip or within 7 days of its end.

Source

Medical transport

Covered

Reasonable costs of medical transport home, pre-approved by Turva, and of a medically necessary escort during transport are covered when the insured has a serious travel illness or accident that has been treated at the destination and medically requires repatriation.

Source

Medical evacuation

Covered

Same provision as medical transport: Turva may require transfer at its own cost to Finland or to another facility if treatment abroad would otherwise be significantly more expensive than equivalent care in Finland.

Source

Repatriation of remains

Covered

If the insured dies during the trip while the policy is in force, reasonable costs of repatriating the deceased, or alternatively reasonable and necessary burial costs abroad, are reimbursed against original invoices; no fixed euro ceiling is stated.

Source

Search and rescue

No limit stated

Search and rescue costs are not mentioned as a distinct covered item anywhere in the T&C or IPID for this product.

Source

COVID-19 treatment

No limit stated

COVID-19 is not separately addressed in the T&C or IPID; general travel-illness rules would apply but this is not explicitly confirmed for COVID-19.

Source

Pre-existing conditions

Conditional

Medical costs for a condition that existed before the trip are not covered, except for acute, first-aid-type treatment at the destination for a sudden and unexpected worsening occurring within the first week, reimbursed for at most 10 days from the start of treatment; costs such as repatriation are not covered under this exception.

Source

Winter sports cover

Conditional

Recreational skiing/snowboarding on marked slopes is covered as ordinary fitness-maintenance sport, but for insureds aged 18+ speed and downhill racing, freestyle skiing and off-piste skiing outside marked slopes are excluded as risky sports/activities.

Source

Adventure sports cover

Excluded

For insureds aged 18 and over, the policy is not valid in an extensive list of risky sports and activities (e.g. combat sports, motorsports, climbing, air sports, diving, extreme skiing/skating), including one-off trial attempts, with no add-on carve-out evidenced for this fixed-term product.

Source

Pregnancy complications

Conditional

Costs from the course of pregnancy, childbirth or miscarriage are not covered, except necessary first-aid-type treatment at the destination for a sudden and unexpected change occurring before week 29 of pregnancy, reimbursed for at most 10 days from the start of treatment.

Source

Personal liability

Optional

Travel liability insurance (matkavastuuvakuutus) is automatically included whenever the optional matkatavaravakuutus (baggage insurance) component is selected; it covers personal injury and property damage caused to third parties while travelling for which the insured is legally liable, up to the sum insured stated in the policy schedule.

Source

Legal assistance

Optional

Travel legal expenses insurance (matkaoikeusturvavakuutus) is automatically included whenever the optional matkatavaravakuutus component is selected; it covers necessary and reasonable legal costs from using a lawyer in private-life disputes, criminal or petition matters directly related to the trip, up to the sum insured stated in the policy schedule.

Source

24/7 assistance

Covered

A 24/7 emergency assistance line abroad (SOS-hätäpalvelu, +358 1019 5111) is provided; necessary phone costs to Turva abroad relating to a travel accident or illness are reimbursed up to 100 euros.

Key conditions

Assistance call deadline

Turva may require the insured to contact Turva in the manner it specifies before going for examination or treatment; Turva has the right to determine where the examination and treatment take place, including via remote services when medically possible.

Unauthorized treatment

If treatment abroad would be significantly more expensive than equivalent treatment in Finland and the insured does not agree to a transfer to Finland or another facility designated by Turva, only the costs corresponding to that alternative are reimbursed.

Purchase while abroad

The insurance contract must always be concluded before the trip begins; a fixed-term travel insurance cannot be taken out once the trip has already started, and the premium must be paid by the due date for cover to take effect.

Chronic conditions

Medical costs for an illness that existed before the trip are not covered, except for acute, first-aid-type treatment of a sudden and unexpected worsening occurring during the first week at the destination, reimbursed for a maximum of 10 days from the start of treatment.

Pregnancy

Costs arising from the normal course of pregnancy, childbirth or miscarriage are not covered, except necessary first-aid-type treatment at the destination for a sudden and unexpected change occurring before week 29 of pregnancy, reimbursed for a maximum of 10 days from the start of treatment.

Pre-existing condition exclusions

A pre-existing illness or injury is excluded from cover as a 'travel illness'; only its acute, unexpected worsening during the first week at the destination is reimbursed, as first-aid-type treatment only and for at most 10 days.

Coverage duration limit

The travel insurance is valid for at most three months per trip; medical costs for a travel illness are reimbursed for at most 120 days from the start of treatment, and for a travel accident for at most three years from the accident.
